Is there a mod for GZDoom that paints the tracers shooting from the player so they're visible in-game for a couple seconds, and you can see where they collide and how many of them? I feel it would be very useful to get a feel for the weapon, but I couldn't find one from an initial search

Webm is from an anon last thread showing off a map to practice two-shotting cyberdemons on a 384 unit platform:

Isn't vertical spread realized in world units somehow, rather than degrees? I think I've read something like that on the Doom wiki, and have seen someone attributing most weapons' very horizontal spread to that (basically it would get tighter vertically the further you are because in fact it's only able to spread further to the sides while the height is fixed)

>> No.5842498

>>5842019
Probably worse.
The thing with Tom and Doom was that he was really set on the idea of telling a deeper story and focusing on realistic environments, when this wasn't really a suitable direction. The game as envisioned by him initially might have been pretty good, but it probably wouldn't have had nearly as strong gameplay.

When Tom left for Apogee and was put in charge of Rise Of The Triad (originally Wolfenstein 2), I think something clicked with him and he decided do a lot of things the opposite of what he tried for Doom, far less realism, make it less serious and mature, have story take a backseat, and since Doom decided to shed a lot of the old arcade baggage from Wolfenstein 3D, Tom went the other way to crank that shit up for ROTT, to make it even more different from Doom.
The result is a really violent and goofy shooter with a tone comparable classic Mortal Kombat, with gameplay like a bona fide arcade shmup, but as an FPS.

I'm incredibly happy that ROTT was made, and I think Tom leaving for other things was the best possible outcome, at the same time, what he did contribute to Doom that actually stuck was incredibly valuable, like teleporters, flying monsters, and a dozen levels which were well retrofitted to what Doom was destined to be.

>>5842054
If you're talking about ROTT, I think it's like Wolf3D but much better in basically every way.
On the expansion, Extreme Rise Of The Triad, I will actually recommend most people not play it, as it's actually rather obtuse and unfair, it's not challenging in a fun way.

This is true, Doom 2, for its criticism, has a lot of very good maps.

>plus Refueling Base was originally a Tom Hall map. Generally speaking, maps that were started by Tom Hall and finished by Sandy Petersen were arguably where Petersen shat the bed the least
That's not how I'd put it, because Sandy is unironically a very good mapper. I will say that some of the best maps of Doom 1 are maps which he recycled from Tom, like E2M2, E2M4, E2M7, and E3M3, but Sandy also manufactured such maps from the ground up, without using Tom's leftovers, with E2M5 and E2M6.
A lot of Doom 2's best levels were by Sandy for that matter.

>>5842334
Because with Doom 2 Sandy got a way bigger workload dumped on him than he should have, so though he put together quite a lot of good maps, a few of them are really weak, it doesn't help that Shawn is a mediocre at best mapper, and Romero, who's actually a really good mapper, doing less maps than he did for Doom 1.

>> No.5842606

I dunno how obvious or not it is, but.

A lot of Milo Casali's maps from Plutonia feature extreme amounts of fuckery with auto-aim distance.
Like, guys who successfully target you, but you can't target them, when in your favorite hiding spot / cover, due to difference in height, and auto-aim not working due to distance being too large.
Kinda like it was in Industrial Zone, but pushed to 11.
So what do you do? Do you just run there, tanking it, and dispose of fuckers as fast as you can?
Actually, there is another way. Rocket's splash component of the damage ignores the height difference. So, rocket launcher becomes the only tool capable of getting those fuckers without leaving the safety of your cover.
This basically makes your rockets the strategic reserve for Special Occasions only and takes them out of all the "ordinary" combat entirely. Especially on pistolstarts.
Therefore, all ordinary combat you do with everything other than rockets which MIGHT lead to some ammo shortage.
And you DO need to save up on those rockets, how else are you gonna splash that archvile tucked just there?

Anyway, what I wanted to say, Milo's part of Plutonia emphasizes a part of Doom's gameplay, that hasn't ever been utilized in its official campaigns: splash damage ignoring height difference.

I feel like there's a reason why it's not used. Infinite splash height can be useful, but it's
1) not intuitive at all, and it's extremely difficult to communicate that it's a thing with 1994 tech. And since it's really not obvious, the average player's reaction would be along the lines of "the fuck is this unfair bullshit?";
2) even when used, it feels less like a proper mechanic and more like a bug or an oversight. This would make the game's perception among the public worse.

Otherwise check out the Doom The Way Id Did series: DTWID, DTWID: Lost Episodes, and D2TWID, they're based around emulating iD Software's style in Doom and Doom 2.

Also check No Rest For The Living, though Nerve software suck at porting Doom to consoles, they did make a rock solid little episode to include in some of those ports, and it can be played on PC.

Yeah, the plot was actually halfway decent, and though there's gaps and issues, particularly with Lo Wang himself, the story with Hoji and Ameonna was pretty good.

And then Shadow Warrior 2 takes a big fat shit on all of that, on top of being a VASTLY less fun game with shit enemies and shit maps, devolving into a cutrate Borderlands clone, a fucking blase lootershooter.
Lo Wang's new support character was intended as a morality pet, which I think has to be the absolute worst and misguided idea you could actually apply to a character like Lo Wang, especially given that the base idea is that he'll grow into the vicious and sadistic one man mercenary warlord that he is in the original game.
Hoji worked so well because he was a similar kind of foul playing bastard to Lo Wang (and also because he took every opportunity to mock him and make fun of him for being an idiot).
Even if Lo Wang wasn't intended to be evil, like Caleb, he was never a goody two shoes kind of protagonist.

I think the cherry on top of the shit sundae is that the cool sword the first game centers around is made a joke out of and turned into a complete shit and generic powerup item, and you at best can unlock a mediocre replica of it through a DLC that can't do any of the magic and is gold plated for no reason.

The original pitch was to make maps which if someone told you they were an unused or lost map from the original Doom, made in 1993, would convincingly look as such. To look just like something Sandy, Shawn, or Romero would have made for 1993 era computers (and also what Sandy would probably have done with a hypothetical Tom level scrap), and with their 1993 era design sensibilities, to specifically emulate the style of each map author.
Likewise for Doom 2, adding American to that formula.

I'd say it's worth checking out, if you liked the original games you might appreciate them some. D2TWID is pretty much better than the original Doom 2, which I say as someone who actually likes Doom 2, and think some people exaggerates its flaws.

-Recompiled a bunch of maps with either instructions given me by the mappers or basic stuff like -soft
-Changed the order so blacast will be on the second batch of levels
-Fixed the teleporter for Ribcage
-Removed the texture wads since I was told it was not necessary to include them
-no other mayor changes

I wanted to a gag map for when you complete everything instead of booting right back at the start map but I'd rather just wrap this up before this ends up being Mordred: Quake Edition.

Assuming no more bugs are found I'm uploading this to Quaddicted.

Gave it a shot with code based on the original A_BFGSpray(), it doesn't like decoration actors tho as for some reason they don't let some tracers spawn particle trails. Comes with two boolean cvars: "bfg_oldspray" to revert the spray to its original functionality and "bfg_laggysfx" to turn on an alt trail that tanks really hard at least on my rig.

>'artificial difficulty: the iwad'
If Plutonia was the original game, I'd understand calling it Artificial Difficulty. It heavily demands for the player to know the ins and outs of the monsters and having awareness of common doom gameplay tropes right from the word go.
But its not the original game. It was a standalone expansion for the sequel. By that point, plenty of people had mastered the original and sequel, with some of them even wanting for a much greater challenge. Plutonia was designed with such players in mind.

>> No.5844292

>>5844278
including literal mazes are generally frowned upon, from what I've seen.

>> No.5844317

>>5844278
My tip would be to look at how "mazes" and the like are implemented in the original games and classical megawads. Typically, they're not structured in the way that a pencil maze would be, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, traversing an actual maze in first person is a fucking chore even with a minimap. Secondly, people who want to max, or even just want to check everywhere to make sure they don't miss obvious monsters will have to spend an inordinate amount of time checking every single passageway, and if there aren't any monsters to miss, it just makes the maze tedious.

Instead, "mazes" are typically small sections of a few branching pathways that lead into each other, E1M2 is a perfect example. Design can certainly be "maze-like" and still work, an entire level can be a kind of maze, but an actual just flat out maze doesn't work well, and isn't fun.

>>5844278
My tip is: don't. Or like the other anon said, make a level maze themed and not an actual maze. Make a mazelike level that doesn't give the player frustration of being in an actual maze.
Mazes are hard to navigate especially when everything looks the same. In my opinion, to avoid someone playing for 5 minutes and then going on to post that your level is shit, you should add zome oints of reference to your map - some landmarks, differently colored rooms, etc. The perfect maze would be one a player gets lost in at first, but can easily resolve.
I'd take inspiration from Thief's The Sword, it's a good demonstration of abovementioned points

The site is reliable and can be trusted.
It's not an ad-ridden shitfest and has only one basic google-provided (and thus easily blockable by default adblock) ad.

It has pretty much every known 80-90's PC game that was released in english, and quite a few european/asian titles that were never translated/released outside of their home country. Also has quite a few unreleased/prototype games.
And russian games, obviously. Most games have image/iso of the original CD and a rip version.

There's a flag in the upper right corner that changes interface language to english. Does not change the reviws/summaries obviously.

not to be confused with "oldgames.ru" which IS an unwieldy ad-ridden shitfest

Depends on what you mean by "designed for co-op".
IIRC, Some levels in Memento Mori for example have moments that were designed with two players minimum, and often had to include workarounds for single player. Such workarounds would be unavailable if played in solo-net, making it impossible to finish without sequence breaking.

There's a .wad someone uploaded here back in like February, it was almost scrapped until someone saw WIP screenshots and asked to play it, and then the guy finished it and uploaded it.
It was like five or six maps, and it actually had a branching path and everything, it was seriously good.

Always change floor height when changing floor textures.
Use special border textures between different wall segments and doorways.
Be strict about texture alignment.
Conscious use of contrast everywhere in a level between light and dark areas, cramped and open areas.
Make sure that if a player could see outside that they should be able to somehow get there.
Be strict about designing several secret areas on every level.
Show player the door, before showing them the key/switch to open that door (this is a VERY important part as it is the base for the backtrack through known areas and interconnectivity that is essential for good map)
Making levels flow so the player will revisit areas several times so they will better understand the 3D space of the level.
Creating easily recognizable landmarks in several places for easier navigation.

These are the basis for every good map out there, so yes. They are still followed nowadays. There's more to a good map than that, but if you follow the above rules, you are pretty much guaranteed at least "okay" map.

4) If you dont use light levels, your map will have flat uniform shading, that's ugly.

I played Sigil through twice, I don't feel I'll ever had a need to play it again. There are much better matters in the community than Romero, and I don't feel Sigil deserves an easy time because it's his.

>redefine what is a megawad.
The traditional requirement to be a megawad was always a minimum of 15 maps. No distinction is made beyond that. Sigil has 9 singleplayer/co-op maps and 9 deathmatch layouts, so it has a total of 18 maps, so it's a megawad. Romero didn't try to redefine anything, you redefined megawad yourself thinking it only ever referred to full 32 map replacements.

"Nazi" is a really tired and overused epithet, and it also outs you as a member of a certain group/culture which still uses it unironically. Let's do a SIGIL survey of sorts, according to your hot opinion:

And bonus round:

>Did any of SIGIL's maps surpass E4M1, E4M2, or E4M6 in difficulty? And if so, which ones?

>> No.5846679

>>5846656
I think E5M7 is harder than any of the E4 maps, but that's mostly because I decided to drop down to the first half of the map and naturally the only way back to the second half was through 20% damage lava, leaving me to do the final stretch of the map with like 20 health
looking at the map in GZDB, it turns out that if I had just kept going, I would've walked over a line to open up the regular path to the second half back up
fucking hell

besides that, the only times I had any issue was when I was trying to double-tap the cyberdemons

A map doesn't have to be City or Techbase in order to not be hellish.
Inmost Dens feels more earthy to me, than hellish.

Probably a good thing, honestly. First 11 or so maps are decent, if a bit easy. And then the later levels kinda fall into mediocre territory, especially by the final third.

Eh, I'd say Perdition's Gate was more consistently mediocre. Doom 2 has plenty of gems after map11.

That also works, in fact it's even better.
What I liked about HUH was that it sparked my interest about Quake and encouraged me to play it again, and discover the mapping scene with some amazing levels.
I don't think Heretic is as popular as Doom or Quake for modding, but that's all the better, because it can help introduce more anons to mapping for, and playing, an obscure Doom engine game.

Tom Mustaine wanted to offer it to iD as part of the Final Doom package, but iD said it was too late.
He would instead get a contract with Wraith Co. who were making Hell 2 Pay as its own commercial .wad, and their mappers would 'finish' Perdition's Gate.

For what Perdition's Gate became, I would say good fucking riddance, because less than half of it is actually any good, you can tell which maps were made by Mustaine and his dad, because they're the interesting and enjoyable maps (and there's some decent premise and ideas going on), and then you can tell which ones were hammered together on an assembly line to fullfil a contractual obligation by unspecified Wraith mappers (possibly just a single apathetic one), because holy FUCK are they uninspired, samey, and boring. People talk about megawad fatigue, but I have never seen a megawad that gives up THIS badly.

Looking at hypotheticals, say that iD were interested, maybe some Team TNT mappers would be brought onboard to finish it, either PD is offered in advance while the Casalis are hauling ass on making Plutonia, or it's finished after Plutonia and maybe they could contribute some maps, along with some other TNT guys, beyond a shadow of a doubt their additions would be better than Wraith's.
Problem is this would likely add a lot of time on the whole Final Doom project, when iD Software were clearly interested in having a complete product sooner rather than later, and likely they wouldn't want this product to be released too closely to the eventual Quake.

Isn't Elf Gets Pissed basically the only notable mapset there is, and that came out in 2015.
The main question is if we would want to make episodes, which might require a considerable amount of preplanning to make experiences that can generally be played through together, or assuming that it's supported with zdoom, making a 32 map set. Wand Starting feels like it's less of an intended thing in Heretic than pistol starting in Doom, so organizing into episodes might be better, and would mean it could be Boom compatible.

Jimmy Sieben was among the two people from Hell 2 Pay team that helped finish Perdition's Gate (Mackey McCandlish being the other), and he also contributed maps to TNT.

The chainsaw rules.
The monster design, if having some issues with some looking too similar, has some pretty good stuff.
The Guardian is genuinely a good bossfight and one of the best iD had made until Doom 4.
Doom 3 Guy looks pretty cool.
