Not liking these Square Enix ports at all. I tried playing FF7 on the Switch, but the graphics are just ugly compared to the original. Gave up and I'll just replay it on my PS2.

Looks good, although Laguna looks a bit too pretty. He looks pretty in his art/portrait, but his jaw is a little more squared. There's a hint of ruggedness. The pre-rendered backgrounds look like ass next to it though, are you telling me they couldn't even do some hasty "HD-ifying" like just smoothing out the edges with some basic Photoshop tool? Even if it's a lazy fix, it'll still make everything pull together better.

Have you even played the game? The menu feels like there's a half second delay each time you try to make a selection, and it feels like your controller is broken. 15 FPS means the game can only recognize new input 15 times per second, 30 would make this that much more tolerable to play. Think of the abysmal tickrate of Overwatch and you'll have an idea of why it's a problem.

Square almost went bankrupt in the late 90s / early 00s due to their movie project which bombed hard. They weren't always a multimillion dollar company. Sony had to bail them out in the last second.

I'm guessing you've never done any project on a computer that requires hunderds of different files, video, audio, font etc. With all the migrating and mastering it's easy to lose track of one or two files. Given that they finished the game and released it, who would be in charge of making sure the thousands if not millions of individual fils were copied and migated to modern hardware, not to mention somehow made to work on modern systems since most of FFVIII was designed and rendered on old Silicon Graphics computers with proprietary software. It's not like they can just take the poject file and open it in Blender

Well yeah, that's what a remaster means for a game like Final Fantasy VIII. Something like Deus Ex requires only a patch for higher resolutions, but because of how FFVIII was made, a proper remaster requires scratching all the assets. That doesn't mean the game will now be a "remake": it will still be a remaster, which involves remaking all the assets.
