What is your opinion on high resolution Supersampling down to native 240p?

>> No.5841815

Judging by that screenshot it looks pretty good on pre-rendered backgrounds

>> No.5841849

>>5841773
For pre rendered games, it's alright. Like playing Resident Evil 2 on gamecube but forced to run at 240p. The character rendering looks a lot better than the jitteryness that the PS1 has.

>> No.5841973

Actually one of the use cases of this was if you wanted to connect to a CRT with a 240p output.

>>5841968
Beetle PSX HW. Just select whatever internal GPU resolution you want (1x, 2x, 4x, 8x) then enable super sampling. When super sampling is enabled, instead of displaying at the selected internal resolution, it downsamples to 240p while still rendering internally at the selected res. Essentially producing an ultra anti-aliased 240p.

Hey, spaz, you don't have to play on a CRT if you don't want to--it just looks like varying degrees of shit if you don't. You know those people who you mock just because they like to play 4:3 stretched out to 14:9? I'll tell you a secret. You're them.

It's something. Even if I were forced to use a fixed pixel display and no shaders I'd be rocking jagged 1x with the raw pixels because it still looks better than that ugly 8x. With something entirely flat-shaded like Virtua Racing it could work, but I can't see it looking decent with any PS1 game that comes to mind at the moment.

Each to their own but I see nothing ugly about that webm whatsoever. It's literally just the original game being rendered at a higher resolution. Still "raw pixels", just more of them.

Seems like a big no for a game like Klonoa

>> No.5842146

>>5842112
It's really the general overall look I'm concerned with, but I'll give you a specific concrete example if you're interested. Look at the plant texture on the rock in the 1x Donald png. Check out the rough pixelated edges all around it and notice how it's somewhat coherent with polygonal edges like on the bridge rail, the character model, the overhanging tree trunk. Now look at the 8x shot and see how that coherence is gone.

So yeah, the pixels are still raw and like you say, there's just more of them, but that makes a big difference in how the game looks. And even if you were to insert higher resolution textures you'd still have extremely low poly models with all possibility of mental abstraction (as in a vagueness that allows for the brain to subconsciously make inferences to fill in gaps) stripped away, and what's left is stark, sterile, uninteresting, and evocative of nothing other than a smelly nerd at a computer doing some 3D modeling while listening to Rush.

If the output screen were a native 240p, then it would be good, but it isn't. That reduced image was then blown up a second time to 2160, and looks blurry as a result. It would have been better with pixels than with blur.

This really does look like the best way to play 3d rendered games. They weren't meant to be held back. If the lack of copious polygons bothers the player, then they should be running the game on an old CRT TV.
