I was going to wait until we had the last 3 rooms left, but the last thread died and it took a while for this new one to pop up, I was about to make one myself. I've changed the movement controls to make zniggy faster horizontally, which should make some jumps less obnoxious. I still plan to overhaul the movement, but this change should make it a bit less shitty to run around in the current environment. The current size of the game is 27.2 kb out of 32kb, which means we will have a lot of room to spare once I optimize room compression further.

We still need a title screen, status bar (use the one in game for reference, it's 256x48 pixels), and maybe a few voice recordings for when the game starts, you die, maybe even play a voice clip whenever you get a gem. Which would cause the game to pause whenever you get a gem.

While the spectrum has 48k of ram, I believe the tape loader only loads into 32k of memory. How much data can we allocate to the title screen and status bar? I imagine the title screen should take up a shit ton of data, and then force the game to load after it. If the status bar is to have a giant Zniggy logo and face like real euro games, that would probably eat into the main game data.

The title screen wouldn't take up as much space as a full room because it can be divorced from the room data. You can store the tiles as "tile 0, tile 1, tile 2, tile 3" instead of "tile 49, tile 212, tile 8, tile 96".

Most of the manual work went into redrawing Zniggy's face and recoloring the trees and the background. I tried different things with the logo, but they did not improve how it looked, so the logo it mostly unchanged. I think you'd need to redraw it completely in a style with outlines to make a difference.

>a random jumble of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean characters
That is going to be difficult to do on an old computer without Unicode. A random jumble is also not as fun as something bad with distinct theme, a clear way in which it fails. I think we could use a theme. For example, imagine a disgruntled employee who barely knew Japanese being burdened with overtime to translate the game. How would he do it if he knew nobody would be able to check his work and he wouldn't be staying with the company for long anyway? He might go from actually translating the room names (badly) to insulting the player to insulting the dev to commentary about his miserable life, etc. Something like that.
>giving Zniggy slant eyes on the title screen and box art for extra relatability.
I'd give the box and the title screen a painfully obvious "Western anime" makeover with the skill of pic related. It's more of a '90s and later than an '80s thing, but what the hell. You can combine it with slant eyes and stereotypes.

The possibility of Brexit happening has roused some feeling on both the nationalistic and EU-shill sides, but if you see the union flag in day to day life you're probably looking at a town hall, a tourist, or down on the roof of certain Minis ... which are now owned by BMW.
