25 minutes is a good length for a shmup. Imagine each run taking over an hour, that would suck.

You kill 3 enemies of the same color

Then the weapon powers up? Or does it max at 3? Do longer chains matter?

I'll explain. Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga work differently.

Radiant Silvergun: you get a chain by destroying 3 enemies of the same color in a row. You extend the chain by beating three enemies of the same color again, it has to be the exact same color. If you destroy 3 red enemies and 3 more red enemies, you're increasing your chain. But if you kill even one blue or yellow enemy, it completely breaks your red chain and starts from scratch. One exception to this: If you destroy a red, blue then yellow enemy you activate a R B Y chain and you can continue with yellow from there. I don't actually know if you keep R B Y, R B Y for 3, 6, 9 if that continues as a chain or not, needless to say that would be much trickier than sticking to 1 color.

Important note: Chaining is more important in Radiant Silvergun for how it directly affects gameplay. In both games they increase your score, but also in Radiant Silvergun you power up individual weapons of your ship (specifically VULCAN, HOMING and SPREAD. you level up these three attributes which power up the weapons vulcan homing and spread, and for the other weapons either increase power or range.) as you destroy enemies, but you exponentially get more experience points and therefore get stronger much much faster if you chain. If you've ever watched videos of playthroughs and wonder why some players have substantially bigger and stronger firepower earlier on, now you know.

For Ikaruga, a chain is 3 of a kind (black or white) but you do not need to keep killing the same color to continue the chain, in other words as long as you destroy enemies in batches of 3 of a kind (black or white) you're continuing your chain.

Finally: Xbox 360 version of Radiant Silvergun has "IKARUGA MODE" which means you just have to destroy 3 of a kind in batches of 3 to continue the chain and don't have to stick to 1 color. You need to own Ikaruga XBLA and at least one achievement in it to unlock this mode in Radiant Silvergun however.

Ikaruga isn't considered a danmaku. The important difference people often make is that there are non-enemy objects and walls to navigate, which doesn't really happen in bullet-hells.

>> No.5826380

They do, but that's not considered a feature of a danmaku. The line is blurry. Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga are not considered danmaku, although it's definitely very easy to view them as such.

>How the fuck does the radiant silvergun scoring work in relation to weapon upgrades?

More points made with one of your 3 main weapons (A, B, C for Vulcan, Homing, or Spread gun) gives more strength to each weapon. The other 4 weapons use combined button presses so the points are split, for ex. the sword requires A+B+C so any points you get with the sword will be split equally between all three main guns.

So if you score 1 million points using the Vulcan but never press any other button, then your Vulcan will be much stronger but the rest of your weapons will remain weak.

Scoring long chains means you get shitload of extra bonus points to get your guns stronger. Without doing this, the last bosses are impossible to beat, you have to dodge them until they time out. Or alternatively on the Saturn version you can just grind your score up using the save feature.

You have 3 main weapons, A, B, C.
The other weapons you get by A+B, A+C, B+C, or A+B+C.
When you get points with weapon A, the points go to the pool for weapon A. When you make score with the A+C weapon (the tail gun), the score is halved between the pool for weapons A and C. And so on.

The more points you fill up the pool with, the stronger the gun gets. The level cap for each gun is level 33. Each weapon gets subtle changes to their looks and effects as they get stronger - the Vulcan gets wider, the Spread gets larger explosions, the homing plasma can target more enemies at a larger radius, the tailgun fires 3, then 5, then 7 shots, the homing laser gets a wider and wider attack radius.

Basically it's like grinding in an RPG.

Longer chains mean more score mean faster weapon powerups.

Ikaruga does not have a change in amount of bullets between the difficulty modes easy, normal and hard. The only difference is this:

Easy: Ships you destroy do not release bullets.
Normal: Ships you destroy only release bullets if they're the same polarity you shot them with. (White bullets destroying a white ship will release white bullets, but if you destroy a black ship with white bullets they don't release anything and vice versa.
Hard: Ships release bullets of their color when destroyed no matter what. So if you destroy a white ship with black bullets it sprays white bullets which can instantly kill you if you don't get out of the way or instantly switch polarity, making the game much harder.
