Ehehe. So I was watching me some Ion Fury videos.

Now I already have suspected back from the preview campaign, essentially, this game is a spin on Eradicator. There were several points of similarity to corroborate that version. Well, two, really.

First one, Eradicator gave you several protagonists to choose from, but being the game with which obviously featured a lot of platforming, the only sensible choice was the fastest of the protagonists, to give you more of leeway on jumps, should you jump using first-person view. Said protagonist was sort of an assassin catgirl, called Eleena. Now, Eradicator was one of the first FPS games with voiced (with more than grunts, that is) protagonists. Sure, Dark Forces contained a couple of lines. Duke, I think, was released earlier than Eradicator as well. Anyway, point is, Eleena was voiced. The personality was essentially no-bullshit one, very similar to Shelly, the latter being more crass.

Second point was all the enemies were either robots or mutants, and the ranged weapons the enemies used were fast projectiles. Which incidentally is also the case with Ion Maiden. In fact Ion Maiden contains several direct quotes on Eradicator's bestiary as well.

So, in essence, Ion Maiden, as per preview campaign, was no-bullshit woman gunning down robots trying to gun down her. Simple enough, distinctive enough to remember I've seen something like that somewhere before.

Now, Eradicator had some peculiarity. In many respects it was a Doom-like shooter. Mouse aiming was obligatory though, due to no auto-aim (mouse implementation was pretty fucking godlike for 2.5D game as well!). And combat dynamic, due to projectiles being fast and Eleena moving like chipmunk on illegal substances, was more Unreal-esque in dynamics (Unreal was not to be released for two more years though). It sort of tried to freshen things up. The levels sort of contained hard-coded gimmicks in them (so hardcoded, I read, they weren't even offered in Eradicator's...

Meaning, custom levels created using only it - there are no other mapping tools for Eradicator to this day - would never feature anything alike what the campaign levels themselves were sporting. There were all sorts of wonderful bullshits levels introduced to further entertain the player. Herein lies the peculiarity. You see, from a certain point onward (basically the end of episode 1), Eradicator's levels began to blur into each other. Like literally, you were like playing (the combat being some of the best in 90s FPS games, I frankly prefer this game combat-wise to any classic Build game), and you caught yourself thinking you have difficulty remembering what even an episode it is supposed to be. Like, without consulting google, I wouldn't be able to say even whether this game had three episodes, or was it four. It was wasn't connected with audiovisuals, the visuals changed changed enough so that the levels were still distinguishable in principle. It wasn't that the levels played out the same, they played the opposite of the same in fact. It's just that the game made it perfectly clear those per-level gimmicks had NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with each other, they were superficial variations on the exact same concept. What that concept was, was made clear through wholly different means altogether. You see, the game had some usable powerups, ridiculous roster of weapons half of which you didn't ever use, that sort of thing. One of the things, two actually, were sort of hovering drones you could find and activate, what I meant was, you could activate two at once. A drone fired each time you fired. So if you chose melee weapon, and swung, the drone would fire, saving you thus ammo (drones had infinite ammo charge). If you fired machine gun, two drones would turn that into three machine guns. Things were ridiculously useful. One caveat: any shot that should've hit you, would hit a drone and likely kill it, if not, the subsequent shot...

So using drones meant playing without getting hit WHICH THE GAME ALLOWED barring some instances were you had to trudge through some toxic sludge for a couple of seconds. I thing there was some item you could use to forego the damage, but the drones still got affected.

Anyway, the core concept I was talking about was the evasion of damage, and the gimmicks the levels introduced had one, and only one, thing in common: they didn't have jack shit to do with the evasion of damage. Thus they were fluff, they didn't train you to get better with the core game, they were there purely to waste your time.

That this point was intentional was made apparent through the very subdued, monotonous art direction, ambient-like droll soundtrack. Even the technical limitations worked for it: Eradicator was VGA-only, so in order for the res being only 320x200 in 1996, they tried to mask it by making the whole game smooth-like with gradient-like textures, nothing much sticking out to produce jarring aliasing of shimmering which would make low res obvious. It was a nice looking game, actually, very good framerate too.

ANyway. Backtrack a bit, the motif of levels smudging together, until you cease being able to tell them apart. THE EXACT SAME THING happens, judging from what I watched (pagb666's ultra-viscera, all secrets, 19 out of 29 videos so far), in Ion Fury. The means differ however. Ion Fury makes level blur by means of being overdesigned sprawling in random directions parrot-colored mess with "requiring oh so much a finesse" secrets splurged all over without any rhyme or reason. In other words, the emphasis is onto overloading you with quantity...

And your sector cornucopia will either be ignored or, best case, scenario, will lead to emergence of ultra-minimalistic mapping styles with every singled goddamn sector and effect having as much direct gameplay significance as at all possible, just to spite you.

Golden Carnage was definitely a great map. I love how it is yet another high concept level, but also one that has the visual clarity of classic dude levels, it is not sacrificing clarity for a bunch of little details everywhere. I disliked a lot of the episode 5 levels for that reason, felt like they went overboard.
Mirage Barrage is also real solid.

I'm fucking fed up with Derelict hate. It's one of the most amazing level layout wise with a wonderful use of SOS, a great concept, and classic design unlike most levels in The Birth and Alien World Order. Basically I think every level other than Duke Burger, Derelict, Mirage Barrage and Golden Carnage is shit in the two expansion episodes... Well, maybe Going Postal is ok, but unremarkable.

Also, I miss this kind of style in Ion Fury. The levels are cool on their own right, but this conceptual grandness, telltale graphics instead of all-in details is a sore miss.

Oh, and I forgot to tell my favourite non-Duke:
Blood: the dual punch of Overlooked Hotel and The Haunting is clearly the best, but Dark Carnival is fun as well.

I forgot to say that Golden Carnage's greatest feat was throwing me back to 1996 with its oldschool design. It's a level with a vintage Duke look, unlike most levels in AWO, which went in the modern overdetailed style instead of conceptual grandness. Even the grey-ish colors in that level looked so classic episode 1-3 Duke. Surprised by the anon who said Derelict sucks, because it was episode 4's classic looking conceptually grand map, and has many similarities with GC.

Mirage Barrage is not flawless, the early maze part looks meh, and it's a bit less vintage in look overall (except for the space part), yet, it was so fun adventure, everything runs so smoothly, loved the map despite its flaws.

Levelord on the other hand clearly tanked in episode 5. Take a look at Red Ruckus. Moscow alone is a prone of great design concepts from the Kremlin to the Stalin seven sisters, not to mention the soviet metro stations, yet, it was just a flat Shop-n-Bag map with some irrelevant extras and a muh Overlord, you can say it can be a simple LA/The Birth map without the cheap skyboxes and posters.

And France is the same, except it at least reused some of Sewer's abandoned locations, yet, I still love Sewer's stylish classic look more. Again, where is the Arc de Triomphe, Louvre, the famous Paris landmarks? Cheap to say the least.

Personally I like Shop-n-bag from Episode 4 a lot, not sure I'd call it an absolute classic, but it is good. So is Duke Burger.
Derelict to me is just a big map with a whole bunch of nothing to it, it's visually repetitive to the point where it gets stale, it feels like you're just going through the motions. I do not like it at all.

Derelict isn't really classic in that sense, what made Duke levels memorable is that they were high concept and relatable settings, so I'd classify Duke Burger as a "classic" duke concept. Derelict to me is bad, but it's way worse when you put it up against a level like Dark Side, which does everything it does but about 400 times better.

Obviously since I already wrote about Golden Carnage I'll repeat again that I love it. I wanna play it in eduke32, fantastic level. Aside from Mirage Barrage, the other levels in E5 felt cluttered to shit and didn't end up being evocative of anything at all really.

A good coop mod would be an I visible tether. The further away you get from a player the slower and slower you move, so eventually you're at a turtle crawl.
