Clock Tower is one of my favorite gems.
The grim ambient, the feeling of hopelessness and art style worked well together and turned it into a classic.

It's pretty sad that they abandoned the pixel art style for that half assed 3d in the PSX sequel. It just wasn't the same.
Why haven't we seen any proper spiritual successor? I would have loved to see more of the same.

I think they were pretty badass. The rooms were pretty detailed and nice to look at.

Alone in the dark is another one that deserves a mention.
The grandad of tank control survival horrors.
The polygons may not have aged very well, but back then this game was mindblowing.

You had a whole mansion to explore, in-game books to read, lovecraftian horrors and shit.
And bugs. Potentially hilarious and gamebreaking.

This game also had a certain vibe of mistery to it.
The sequels sucked, tho.

Silent Hill was probably the best survival horror for PSX.
There's just nothing else that gives you that feeling of dread and isolation.

Lost in a big city to explore, no idea of what the fuck is going on, monsters prowling the streets and the creepiness of switching to the alternate reality.
Even though you could fight off the monsters, the fear element was never lost thanks to limited resources and well designed ambients.
The sequels were good too.

I wish I could forget it to play it again.

Good choices.
AITD was my first horror game, I used to play it on my ancient 486. Waxworks was cool too.
I only found out about clock tower when it came out for playstation as "the first fear"
Resident Evil 1 gave me nightmares, especially when meeting the first zombie.
I never finished it. The monsters were too badass toward late game.

Nothing will ever top this horror gem in the pre-ps1/n64 gen of gaming. Even the ps1 versions don't hold a candle to the snes one. Clock tower 3 was extremely good I must say. Weren't they supposed to make a movie? Also, isn't Nightcry for pc related? Damn, you got me all fired up. Any others with the feel of snes clock tower? Don't care if it's retro.

I can't believe it... but the day right after they tweeted about a kickstarter, Hifumi Kouno launched his own kickstarter for Night Cry.
I suppose it would have been impossible to compete against the original Clock Tower director. The poor dude's butt must have been ravaged so hard he gave up.

I fucking love Clock Tower on Playstation. I do not get the hate for it and I'm always shocked to hear people bash it. It's one of my top 3 favorite video games of all time, and I prefer it to the SFC Clock Tower, though I do absolutely love First Fear as well.
Ghost Head/Struggle Within was ass and Clock Tower 3 for PS2 really jaded me, I thought it was trash. But to each their own.
One of my other top 3 favorite of all time games is Echo Night 2 for Playstation. Echo Night is a great game, but the sequel is superior in almost every way. I recommend it if you enjoy Clock Tower, horror, mystery, and care for story.

IIRC, the PSX's only perks are a new 3D opening that you can see on YouTube, and like 2 new death scenes for Jennifer. It's your call, but there's nothing wrong with the SFC version.
Also, Clock Tower PSX fans, are you aware that there were 2 CYOA novels released in relation to the game? One from Helen's POV and one from Jennifer's POV. Helen's part was translated by a fan a few years ago. You can find the text here:

The PSX version is pretty much the SNES with some cut content put back in the game.
You could hide in the car when chased, they added the zombie in the fridge, clown doll, an extra interaction with the mirror, and a couple of other minor things.
Nothing that changes radically the experience. Even if you go with the SNES you'll lose nothing of import.
They're both good versions.

1)Akiba is a must of course, on a sunday it's super packed, Super potato is really nice if you want to look at weird shit like old MX or use an actual virtual boy (it does fucking suck), but the real gem of akiba are the arcades, tons of arcades all packed and with that AC + ballsweat smell, just as i remembered from when i was a little shit going to cybercafes, do not buy anything in akiba though, it's a tourist trap at this point.

2) Get ready to walk a lot, in fact, i would recommend you start walking a few kilometers a day to get used to it, bring pain killers so you can keep walking if your feet are killing you, some ibuprofen is not a bad idea either.
Uber is a scam, do not depend on taxis

3) Bring a good coin purse, you'll get swamped by coins (5 yen coins are a nice souvenir)

4) i can't talk to you much about temples, i was sick of them by the time i got to tokyo, the meiji temple is nice and kamakura has nice temples and beaches (It's identical to the city from ika musume)
The shibuya crossing may be memetic but it is an experience, i don't regret the packed train afterwards

5) What systems do you buy for? Book off is great for Psone and other common ones, i looked for SNES only so i was fine with bookoff

JAL sometimes weighs carry ons, be carefull with that

6) Free Wi-Fi is rare, and a must to not get lost, you can speak english as long as you stick to one word at a time, super slow, if you use pics from your phone and hand signals it's a big help (If, for example you are looking for saturn games, saying "geemu" while showing a picture of the sega saturn logo they'll point you to the right direction)

7) curry house is delicious, go there for the curry experience.

8) They get up early, do it too

9) the mandarake headquarters in nakano broadway is full of cool shit, from affordable animation cells (I got an original sakura card captor, urusei yatsura, boogiepop phantom, hajime no ippo and eureka seven for under 40 bucks total), old posters and toys, games are a ripoff there. not a bad place to buy figs.

What are your interests anon? I may have more tips but depends on what you wanna do.
I'd divide sightseeing during the day and going out at night to arcades and bars, be careful with bars, they are expensive (and since nips get shitfaced fast, they are double expensive)

Thank you again, i did a pdf (with pictures) listing all the games and consoles i would like to get. Honestly thats the only thing i'm interested in, maybe a couple of movie posters from mandarake too. I didn't know about animation cells that sounds amazing, i will check it out.
I'm good at walking so i think i will be fine. I'm planning on getting a saturn and a japanese ps1, maybe a famicom since i don't own one.
I will be going with a cousin that collects figures, but he is more into vintage american toys, so i'm planning to visit 200 toys, toy goldenage and spiral.
Tell me some tips about nightlife, what is worth it and what is not, i admit that i got a little bumed about trains closing at midnight.

>> No.5809894

>>5809860
One last old console tip, be carefull when buying super famicom gamepads, they sometimes put the usb ones with the actual retro ones, but you might get a super famicom usb control for 3-5 bucks, so that's not bad

Mandarake in nakano actually has vintage toys, he will have an (expensive) Blast.

Karaoke is fun, a lot more fun if you can manage to go with a nip, lots of english songs.
International parties are a decent way of getting laid if only english, get early, find two lone girls that look uglish and you are almost garanteed a fuck, they tend to be very submisive, sometimes to the point of rapiness, tread carefully there, a good rule of thumb is if they initiate any form of physical contact you are in for a fuck (which will be as active as a dead fish, but hey, fuck)
It's not a bad idea to recruit guys for a karaoke night either, just say you've never been to a karaoke and they'll jump at the chance most likely.
Love hotels are super fucking expensive, so that's a negative.
Izakaya are half drinking half eating, so go there wanting to eat as well as drink.

Print a list of all your games but one for each console separately, in japanese if possible, so it's easier to tick off the list of all the stuff, don't underestimate how intimidating a wall of kanji titles can be so familiarize yourself with the titles, you may not be able to print stuff there so take that into consideration.
Getting some form of internet and a portable battery is a must to be honest, you don't want to get lost and google maps is excelent for trains (Everything is laid out by the meter)

If you can, try to find out if there are game nights, my friend knew a guy living there, so i don't know how to look for it, but thanks to that expat i got a free entry into a tekken 7 tournament, which was a fun experience.

I really recommend waking up early, but be careful with the opening times, they may be later than you expect, mandarake opens kinda late.

Not a whole lot, but I've tried it along with some of his other games. They suffer enormously from being one-man projects and he doesn't put enough time into his games before he's onto the next one. There's also too much loud noise/lazy jump scare bait sprinkled across a lot of what he makes. The Night Ripper is worth checking out though.

Any of you guys play Echo Night? Just started it yesterday. I really like it, though, I don't find it all that scary. The little ghost girl fading into a dark room to giggle made me jump though. Your father used to hunt demons or something and you get transported to a ship full of ghosts. Alot of them aren't harmful and you have to help them pass on. The ones that do harm you are afraid of the light, so you have to hunt down light switches for every room, and not all of them work. It's a pretty fun adventure puzzle game, but it's on the King's Field engine, so the controls take some time to get used to.

I spent a couple summers ago with Echo Night 2, and it is hands down the best game I have played in years.
After I cleared all of the endings in EN2, I played Echo Night. EN2 is vastly superior. I have not played 3, but I don't expect it or any other game to ever top 2.
I did find a few parts of EN2 genuinely scary, and that in itself is a feat. But the atmosphere and story are what really makes it shine.
