Refute this

"Decoded YIQ can go well beyond the defined range of standard RGB signals. For example, the color of the sky in SMB1 might drive the blue gun at the same level that an RGB input with a blue level of 0.9Vp-p would (I'm making up numbers here). But whoops! The maximum level for RGB inputs is only 0.7Vp-p. The sky is effectively "bluer than blue" from an RGB perspective. This sounds weird and unintuitive at first, but once you grasp how colorspace transformations work it makes sense.

The upshot is that if you try to digitize this out-of-gamut color to 8bpp digital RGB, the blue channel will get clipped to 255, whereas the ideal value would be more like 328. The red and green channels don't get clipped because they're still within the defined range, so you end up with a hue shift and desaturation. That's why the sky appears more pale and purplish when digitized by an HDTV or capture card than it does when viewed directly on a CRT.

There are a few different ways you can deal with this issue when making an RGB NES palette. First, you can simply clip the out-of-gamut colors the same way a capture card would. Second, you can darken the out-of-gamut colors until they fit within the defined range, which gives you vibrant colors with correct hues but screws with gradients and looks rather strange. Third, you can desaturate the out-of-gamut colors, which leaves you with dull-looking colors but correct hues and luminance values. Or you can take a hybrid approach plus a dash of artistic judgement to try to create balanced and pleasing colors. But no matter what you do, you won't be able to perfectly recreate the original colors in standard RGB."

I just remembered something about using my mom's old NES like 15 years ago. Usually, when I turned it on, it'd do the blinking blue bullshit. (Evidently she took poor care of it.) Sometimes a game would work, but it would eventually crash. But then sometimes, the game would work just fine.

But sometimes, games played just fine, but looked very slightly wobbly, like in the picture. I didn't understand it when I was a kid because I knew that the games fucking up was a connector issue and that looked like a video issue, but I noticed games were slightly more likely to gradually fuck up if they looked wobbly. I think the wobbly look was slightly more common than getting a "regular" picture unfortunately.

That is indeed the objectively best way to experience the game. Purple skies subconsciously tell the player that they're in an entirely different world and that their rules don't necessarily apply here. The surreal geometry with giant pipes and a strange aura around everything practically scream alien and unknown. Kids will see a game where they fight off the monsters and save the day, but adults will recognize the subtle imagery at play here. You're a plumber, and you enter strange alien pipes and are transported to different hellscapes full of monsters trying to kill you. Your goal isn't to rescue the "princess", as she is nothing more than a manifestation of Mario's inner-self, locked away by otherworldly entities. Your goal is to reunite with your inner-self, your "soul", and leave this hellscape once and for all.

You can't get a more soulful experience than that.

>But no matter what you do, you won't be able to perfectly recreate the original colors in standard RGB
False. Overdriving RGB channels on a CRT does *not* extend the gamut, because the primaries remain the same. You can just scale down all the RGB channels evenly until they fit the defined range, and increase display brightness to compensate. SMB sky ends up the correct blue, just like in the best officially released version (Vs. SMB).

I thought what was under contention was what the colors looked like when displayed on a TV. But Miyamoto would have chosen a specific color from a palette, which would have been coded something like #4456 in the game's code. Instead of asking him, we could just ask someone who knows basic NES coding, and then once we have that basic line of code that corresponds to the limited colors the NES had to work with for any given game, we have the indisputable specific color, regardless of the fact that it will inevitably look different across different TVs or official emulators (Animal Crossing, Classic NES GBA, Virtual Console, etc.) Very simple way to close the case.

>we have the indisputable specific color
No we don't?

That's precisely because there's no indisputable specific color that can be traced down to a conscious decision except the one the developers of a game worked with.

It seems as if you're the one who has no idea how HSV works if you think saturation or value affects hue. Where you might be getting confused is in conflating colour and hue. Two different colours can have the same hue, for example brown and orange, although brown is still technically a variety of orange. But also sometimes one colour can straddle multiple hues. The lavender in your image that you're mistaking as a variety of purple is actually a variety of blue. Wrong, dumbasses. Nintendo did not develop the NES Classic. It was outsourced to N.E.R.D., a gaijin European company who have no idea what they they're doing.

The official Nintendo palette for Super Mario Bros. is on Super Mario Maker 2, which is the most recent release and developed by Nintendo EPD. That uses blue skies

>This palette is for digital display users that want a more authentic CRT experience (as close as can be approximated). It approximates the color and intensity of a Sony PVM CRT screen. Over 30 hours was put into composing this palette, with sampling countless games from the entire NES library. Many passes were done of the palette during live feed from a PVM until each and every color transitioned identically to the PVM screen. I then synchronized boot-ups of dozens of NES games to watch the color output from the PVM and the LCD display side-by-side. The results were fantastically similar, and as absolutely as close as humanly possible. The PVM was set to D93 color temp for this final version.
D93 is 9300K. This is the colour of the sky in that palette.
