There was a blog I used to love that introduced me to games like Pop'n Tanks and Tokyo Twilight Busters, I think it may have been called Shinju Forest?

I remember it stopped working for me for a while, but it had a ton of entries delving deep into more obscure games, does anyone remember it?

It was actually, and that entry was from 2013 no less, good memory!

The blog was Shinju Forest, I remembered that it had an entry on Zwei!! and found a dead link on the HG101 article for it, then looked up the archive for it.

I'd recommend looking through it for any that are interested in somewhat more obscure games, there's a lot of good stuff there including a few things I'd never heard of.

http://gaminghell.co.uk updates when it feels like but has personality and some fun screenshot lp. Likes to dig deep into secrets/weirdness of some arcade games too.

http://superadventuresingaming.blogspot.com/ covers retro and modern in a psuedo lp format. It tends to like classic PC games but console stuff turns up quite a bit. Usually plays a few hours and decides if it's a game they'd play more of or not, depends.

http://retrovania-vgjunk.blogspot.com/ updates far less than it used to but it has fun with crappy/weird games - at it's best when it's perusing weird old Euro computer games/japanese weirdness. Its '(genre) covers' features are fucking hilarity.

https://superfamicomrpgs.blogspot.com/ is a guy playing/suffering through as many SNES/PCE rpgs as possible, with the intent of playing them all. He avoids US releases/games that just don't interest him, so what you're often reading about are games without translation patches, from a guy with moonskills. Have been a few games he's played I'd love patches for, and he's played a few that got one later, so it's usually fun to see if that newly translated rpg sucks or not. He also runs https://strategyrpgs.blogspot.com/ which is the same but for console SRPGs.

If there's any other interesting genre chrongaming blogs they'd be fun reads, I know there's a more general CRPG one.

https://advgamer.blogspot.com for (mostly) graphic adventures
https://bluerenga.blog/ for text adventures
https://crpgadventures.blogspot.com/ for adventure games AND CRPGs

All good blogs and worth reading.

I had not, thank you! Not as in-depth as I usually like, but I've already seen a few games I'd never heard of before, some of them really interesting looking. It looks like a good resource for being introduced to lesser known games that fell through the cracks.

>VGJunk

I second this recommendation, although the authors personality/sense of humor isn't really my kind of thing. I think something that should be noted about this site is that he'll often play through a whole game in one article, essentially giving an outline of the game's stages, bosses, and ending.

This is a good thread.
A couple months ago I was going through my bookmarks (they only go as far as 2006, unfortunatelly) and was sad to see most of those blogs and websites I loved disappeared.

FantasyAnime and RPGClassics still going strong made me happy, though. Those 2 and RPGFan were a huge influence on my love for RPGs growing up.

Best to archive.is and Freezepage the websites you visit otherwise once it is deleted its gone from the internet forever. People think someone will save it but sadly it can fall through the cracks to be forgotten like YTMND was.

This was something I hadn't realized I'd grown to miss in retro games. And physically swapping cartriges out is literally quicker than dealing with 99% of digital menus and interfaces. I enjoy feeling like I'm in control of my electronics and not the other way around.
