I see you've listed "Final Fantasy games" however, FF6 is a few steps above the rest. Well, a few steps is putting it lightly. Is there a reason to play any other JRPG, no any other game after playing FF6? It puts every game you listed here to shame. If you've played FF6, you've played it all.

Why even continue to live after FF6?

Is it bad that I only experienced Grandia on PS1?
I had no idea it was on Saturn until recently, in fact I only ever saw a single copy of Grandia in my life and it was in a bargain bin at Kmart when I bought it.

Actually I never really knew about Sega's existence at the time.
I always walked past the Sega games at the stores and assumed they were for PC or something.
I think the Dreamcast is the only one I ever acknolwedged and that was out of stores pretty quickly.

Oh I see, I got chewed up in another thread recently for not knowing about the Saturn version.
I guess that guy was a total weeb that expects 10 year olds to import japanese only JRPGs.
Thanks for the tip.

Beyond the Beyond and Persona

>> No.5806252

breath of fire 3, wild arms 2
but I consider both of the series to be a waste of time in comparison with Valkyrie profile or final fantasy, or even suikoden

>> No.5806260

Vandal Hearts and Vandal Hearts 2 are good.
Saiyuki: Journey West is okay.
Vanguard Bandits sucks.
A lot of people say Front Mission 3 is the best.
Persona, Persona 2 are nice, pretty different from later entries and more similar to the baseline SMT series.
Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the all-time greats.
Wizardry 1-2-3 is good, but it doesn't have the original music, which is just so great. Go with the SNES version.
Thousand Arms is bad.
Beyond the Beyond is bad.
Azure Dreams is kind of enjoyable, more as a town builder than a roguelike Pokemon dungeon crawler.
The Breath of Fire games get better with each iteration. 1 < 2 < 3 < 4 < 5
Valkyrie Profile is okay, but has great graphics.
SaGa Frontier 1 and 2 and Legend of Mana are great.
Jade Cocoon is pretty weird and worth trying out. Not sure about the sequel, I've heard it's pretty different.
Threads of Fate is kind of cool.
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure is super easy and weird, not great. I played it to get a girl to sleep with me.
Brigandine: Legend of Forsena is pretty good, there's an updated version that was translated on romhacking.net that adds a second part that's worth checking out. The company that made it just trademarked some new game in the series, so it might come back.
Dragon Quest 7 is the absolute best Dragon Quest game.
The Suikogaiden games are okay if you like visual novels or are a big fan of the Suikoden series. I wasn't that into them.
Hoshigami is bad.
Kartia is bad.
Shadow Madness is bad.
Dragon Seeds is bad.
Eternal Eyes is okay.
Asuncia: Matsue no Jubaku seems pretty cool but I can't get it to work right.
Well, there you go.

Why is Beyond the Beyond bad? I was thinking of playing it.

>> No.5806512

>>5806418
I dunno why he categorised it as bad, since I quite like it, but it's an early RPG and the developers weren't using much of playstation's capabilities, so it basically ended up as a SNES RPG that runs on the playstation. (Which is kind of nice too in its own right, as I'm not fond of the early 3D that PS games represent.)

I think that it's aimed a bit at the female crowd too (that cute dragon pet, for instance), or that's the impression I've gotten from playing the Japanese version. They probably scrubbed some of that from the US version...

Game-wise... that beefy guy you get near the start is almost worthless. That's an irritation to me at least.

I say it's still worth playing though.

kinda. nothing groundbreaking, sounds and music can get annoying, and that is not a good thing in jrpg. characters and story is nice. it's short(shorter than chrono trigger tier). it's scary shit. so if you have 10 hours give it a go

>> No.5806669

>>5806652
FUCK no.
The story and atmosphere are very good.
But the game is SLOW AS FUCK. And I mean, unbelievably slow. It's even slower if you don't emulate. A battle against a single enemy takes more than 1 minute to complete, and that's if the enemy only takes 2 attacks to die. And there's a ton of battles.

Koudelka would be much better if the battles weren't so slow. Or numerous. I've played this back in 2003, when I was 17. I tried to revisit it last year, and couldn't bear playing more than 2 hours of it. For your information, you find the third character (the priest on the left of the cover) almost 2 hours into the game. Do you know how many rooms that is? 10. 10 rooms.
Imagina taking 2 hours to navigate 10 Resident Evil rooms. That's how slow Koudelka is.

In the end, I used a code to turn off random encounters, boosted my levels by 10 every 2 hours, and just enjoyed the ride.

Koudelka is a 10 hour game and the prequel to the awesome Shadow Hearts 1/2, absolutely.

>> No.5806681

>>5806652
Koudelka is rather short, but it has one of the worst examples of padding in an RPG. It's 10-13 hours long, but at least 9 of those hours are just battles or loading screens.

>A lot of people say Front Mission 3 is the best.
Far from it, it was probably the only FM they played.

FM1 is pretty fucking great, think FF tactics with a bit of random mechanics on skills.
Visual side of the game is awesome and even tho gameplay getting a bit stale near the end its still far cry from the drag FM3 becomes halfway into the game.

FM2 is a great improvement over FM1 and have tons of gameplay mechanics that never made it into FM3 and did a lot to increase tactical layer of the game.

Visuals are great, mech designs are way above anything you can see in FM3 and map size is in some cases x10 what you have in FM3.
Enemies also have more military units that do more than just shoot at you.

FM3 have great artstyle and comfy backgrounds, nice tech design and internet with tons of lore but its pretty shallow tactics wise and kinda requires you to grind VR training to learn stuff you want which in turn over levels you and lowers your rating.

Its a good albeit shallow game with lots of good sides that spread itself too thin across all those hours of gameplay.

Legaia's combo system is
>Select the player's commands (up, down, up for instance is a move)
>Then choose who will you attack
>Do it for all 3 (you don't start with a full party of course, but it's a party of 3)
>Then attack
And the game always keeps your last command with everybody so you can just repeat what you're doing with weaker enemies
But I still think the higher encounter rate isn't that higher, I even used to get Bad Luck Bell (item that makes the encounter rate go even higher) equipped to level up my Seru monsters
Oh yeah, there are monsters which you can capture, this is another reason to get into fights, you have a chance of capturing one by defeating it

True story. DQ7 was a mass amalgamation of the past DQ games while adding in a main story that imo has pretty good pacing for being a game that's longer than Persona 5. Unfortunately it got overshadowed since it was released near the same time as FFX and a bunch of other PS2 games. That, and DQ8 was looked at with lots of positive reception since it was the first 'next gen' game in the series.
