Weeaboos BTFO soon when no one needs to learn Japanese to enjoy Japanese games with a mostly accurate translation.

The problem with OCR translations is that it doesn’t take into account that sentences can span over several text boxes, which can drastically alter the meaning of the sentence. You can translate nouns and verbs, but grammar clauses that span across several screens is still an obstacle. It could be fixed toa point if Retroarch could read data ahead from the game files, but that’s really not possible because of all the different ways developers stored text in their games.

At least it’ll be helpful for action games.

>> No.5798218

People shit on this feature a lot, but it's honestly not a bad idea for non-story driven games. I've had to bust out an OCR occasionally to figure out what I need to do to progress in certain games.
You don't need to understand any nuances of the language if some NPC is just asking you for a potion or whatever.

I literally don't get what's the advantage of having emulators locked to what retroarch guys think is a good architecture/API. What are the advantages besides having muh seamless and homogeneous emu box with 999 consoles?

RIP that PC-98 patreon scammer
A moment of silence

Reading babelfish translated nipponese games will never be the same without the scammer and his resetera sycophant here writing sassy wall of texts why it's good that EOPs are getting scammed with a "liberal translation" (is that how they call machine translations too these days?)

>You don't need to understand any nuances of the language if some NPC is just asking you for a potion or whatever.

This argument is mostly used to deride translations that are "too literal", "too accurate" (autistic localizers who get every single nuance of the text in English, even if it's quality prose), or "too dry" (not enough COMEDY) - all of this is basically strawmanned as Babelfish-tier.

It's then used to promote "localizations" that claim to capture "the creative intent of the original work" then do an even worse job of getting those nuances. It's only a carte blanche to justify very wide rewrites so that the editors get their long awaited scriptwriting debut (just look how Treehouse is protective of THEIR take on Nintendo games so much they often try to get European versions translating from their English version rather than the original, even when qualified staff is available... the net result is stories full of cringe memes and translation induced plot holes for pretty major happenings in the latest Zelda for example, which speaks all too well for where their priorities lie)

>People shit on this feature a lot, but it's honestly not a bad idea for non-story driven games. I've had to bust out an OCR occasionally to figure out what I need to do to progress in certain games.

This feature works exactly like with Windows XP visual novel / eroge, that had fanmade utilities that acted like text hooks, either by intercepting the raw Japanese text data, or API calls to the font rendering functions.
That approach was attempted for NES (check FCEUX or Mesen for text hooker options) and PC-98 but had limited success as consoles are very non standardized. The Legend of Localizations guy basically redoes the work from scratch for his method for each game.
This Retroarch thing solves that with OCR that should work everywhere.

Those could search online databases for word definitions, kanji readings, etc... with 2007 technology, not only Babelfish.

Japanese to English translations are ages from being even mediocre.

Now that's more like it. Kanji ignorants like me will be able to understand a bit more without having to stop every five minutes to look up a kanji I don't know.

If you can't read kanji you can't understand the game. I don't really get what the point of all this shit is. Everyone can either be another cockroach studying Japanese to be a parasite on Japan without anything to offer, or just play all the games already in English which is more than enough for one lifetime. Why play a game slaughtered by machine translations with tons of items, spells, weapons, characters, places with made up names (imagine trying to make sense of SMT spells or enemy names through machine translation).

I used to play HRPGs with a text hooker, which is miles better than any OCR tech. If you just want the gist of the story, MTL is fine. It's a far cry from a translation though, and miles away from just reading the game in nip.

I have no doubt that one day we will have AI translations that surpass humans. But it's not going to happen for at least another 20 years, and even if it happened tomorrow, I'd never use them for Japanese. It'd be nice if EOPs could actually participate in basic discussion of games, though.

maybe I did witness the beginnings though, I had one in my class that would just draw manga all the time and was obsessed with japan and even went there of course and said she was going to marry goku when she was a little girl. Man I should have asked her out in highschool she was kind of awkward but a total babe with a big ass (not gross huge but like nice big) but nobody really realized it cause she dressed like shit, we coulda fooled around and watched DBZ together had she known how obsessed I was too she woulda been all over me. This was at the time when anime was like brand new in north america the only shit out there was dbz sailor moon and gundam so being a weeb was extra weird we didnt have a word for it then though.

I have only met one actual weeabo, she was a 15 year old lesbian and that was way back when 4chan was in its infancy in 2005, And even then she just wanted to watch two boys boning each other's asses, she didn't care about that crazy political patriotism bull.
I don't think anyone of sane mind would believe Japan is superior now that they've been in economical recession for 2 decades but I will say that, at least their pop culture is brainwashed into hating men, cuddling gays and immigrants and spreading leftism like certain English speaking countries.
