Some games work for VR a lot better than others. Like, Serious Sam Fusion VR and PAYDAY 2 wreck me, but Blade & Sorcery and VRChat as well as Pavlov don't. Considering Doom is intended to be fairly fast-paced, I can imagine that it would really mess someone up if they're not adjusted to it.

Something GS3 related that's kinda simple but i'm really happy about: Depending on your current loadout, new ammo types will spawn on the maps for weapons you picked up in other levels. So if you grab the Assault Rifle in Level 2 and go complete Level 1's missions, you'll find ammo pickups for that weapon as well!

I would like some feedback on designing this section of cave.
This area isn't somewhere the player can reach, it's just to "flavor" an area, but I didn't want the rock face to look too "90's" with the straight lines and such, but now I feel like this looks to.....I don't know. Off.
I'm actually thinking of going back to the more "jagged" old school look.

Speed Of Doom was very good with their interior, curvy caves but this is kind of fucking it up but I can't quite see "how" I just know that it's off.

Any ideas?

.sfpack is a special compression format for soundfonts since notes and tones are so similar they can be mathematically packed up to 6-7 times, and then unpacked without loss.

You'd need an unpacker tool to convert it back into useful soundfont format.

Sorry I'm not up to date on the latest version but for the most part I'd say it's decent enough. Not accurate to the original exactly but good enough.

Well it's not the BFG Edition ports. They used the censored wads, but for whatever reason they wrapped it in a Unity shell, likely for menus and the DRM, and thus odds are all the coding oddities (squished scaling, randomized pitches, slowed down music for they are recorded audio files and not MIDI anymore) had to be done all over again on their own independent values instead of copypasting Nerve's prior work.

1. The Secret Found message wasn't in the original? I like how it tells you it's a secret and with even a sound effect on GZDoom, but I'm not seeing in the more vanilla versions or PRBoom`
2. I guess Software render is the way to play? Why Hardware Accelerated the sprites seem to change heights in the floor, even obscuring some blood or tree root at the bottom?

>>5798072
prboom+ has the secret message as an optional thing (it's optional in zdoom too - cl_showsecretmessage); it isn't present in vanilla
and sprite origins often have the lowest parts of them rendered "under" the floor, to make the sprite look like it's actually resting on the ground in front of you, rather than floating over it. software renders it fine, and opengl doesn't, hence why opengl pushes it out of the ground. this is also configurable - "adjust sprite clipping" in the opengl settings of gzdoom.

>The Secret Found message wasn't in the original? I like how it tells you it's a secret and with even a sound effect on GZDoom, but I'm not seeing in the more vanilla versions or PRBoom`
I think it was originally in Boom, or one of its derivatives, and that's where the sound effect is from.
If you wanted to, you could put a .wad in autoload which would replace the sound effect with the one from Quake or something, if you wanted something more subtle.

>I guess Software render is the way to play?
Up to you. I use hardware but with the blurry smear filter turned off, I like how the level geometry doesn't warp, and how I can look straight up and straight down (for the few times when its relevant). Also until recently, only hardware mode allowed truecolor (as in not being restricted to the palette). Don't know if it supports Brightmaps yet, but give that a look, they're pretty cool.

>Why Hardware Accelerated the sprites seem to change heights in the floor, even obscuring some blood or tree root at the bottom?
This can be changed with the sprite clipping option, 'smart' is the one I prefer.

>> No.5798096

Kinda. Build and Doom has some similarities with rendering, it's just that Build ended up doing a lot of things which Doom opted not to do (mainly for reasons of performance on 1993 computers), but which it technically could be capable of with a little bit of work (Carmack considered slopes for Doom, for instance).

The good:
-Maps 1,2,3 are really solid
-Maps 5,6,7 are the best and my favorite parts
-Atmosphere is top-notch
-Soundtrack is amazing
-Impressive the visuals accomplished with Doom's stock visuals, but the red cracks everywhere can get old
-Making do with the Shotgun and sparse ammo can be fun but...
The bad:
-Shotgunning Barons isn't fun
-Item placement for pistol starts seem to be an afterthought
-Chainguns are almost absent
-Maps 4,8 are kinda bad and dickish
-Secret level is okay-ish, with the cyberdemon fight elevating it above mediocre
-Nightmare is unplayable, whereas in vanilla Doom is insane, but doable

The highs are really highs, like Unspeakable Persecution(e5m6), and the lows are really low, like Paths of Wretchedness(e5m3) or the end to e5m8. I'd give a 8/10, wish there was more to it

Speed and reactions, I think.
Guns and Doom are much snappier and quicker, and since enemies aren't in the middle of a 3-D animation, their pain state can be a lot quicker and more sudden before they're back to fighting, whereas Quake's models are often in the middle of kinda floaty slow animations that they have that leave them wobbling around for longer in a less satisfying way.

Because doom's sprites have better death animations Quake's 3D models.

Drawing a 2D animation of blood and guts spilling out of something as it gets blown half is exponentially easier than depicting the same thing with a 3D model.

Doom-sprite-like gore - even vanilla doom, not any of the newer gore mods - is an ton of work, not just for the artist but for the computer, too. a sprite covered in blood doesn't really take up any more memory than a sprite without blood, but a 3D model with extra polygons and extra textures for all its giblets practically doubles it, if not triples it.

So I've finished Plutonia now sans the secret levels and I made up my mind, he's worse than me at Doom and he falls for traps easily because his playstyle is mostly based on rushing the map instead of "turtling" like I do (not that rushing a map is equal to playing Doom badly, but someone with his skill or mine can't go all out like others can).
It's still a good review though, he showcased the most relevant parts of each level for the most part, but in the end, I feel like Plutonia isn't super hard as he implies but rather tedious after a while, not nearly as the same level as slaughtermaps are but tedious nonetheless.

I haven't mapped for doom in a while, so I decided to make a clusterfuck of a slaughter map.

Fair bit of warning: I designed it with Project Babel in mind. While it is definitely possible with vanilla, it's much harder-- especially because the chaingun and BFG have a lot more punch in the mod. Even with babel, it's fairly difficult, but it's configured for multiple difficulties.

It uses CC4 textures, so I have a download with and without them attached

Eviternity is an utterly mediocre and unremarkable timesink with close to zero novelty in it, for those who think that sprawls ("""""non-linearity""""", uh-huh) equal good leveldesign, while in reality they just make the whole thing look a scatterbrained clusterfuck.

You know, it reminds me, like, you can play the piano while eliciting something more or less resembling "music" from it. Or you can like spread your fingers as wide as you can and start randomly hitting the keyboard with both of your hand so that at any time 10 or more sounds would play out (more if you press the corresponding pedal). What you get from this style of playing, is not music, it's called cacophony.

GZDoom modding wizards, I have a question:

It was brought to my attention that Perk's Enhanced Smooth Weapons (https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=32628)) makes the switching weapon time much faster than what you get in vanilla. I love the smoother weapon animations, but I feel like I'm getting an unfair advantage in being able to switch weapons this fast with it.

What do I have to look for/edit from SLADE to restore the vanilla switchweapon time?
