Important for the FPS genre and gaming history, not a game i would play nowadays, just really really lame level design where everything looks the same.

Sure, one can memorize the maps, but you still have a boring looking game, and i get that it's supposed to be a prison, but Jesus Christ, the textures really don't excite anyone, there aren't that many weapons and all but one revolve around shooting less or more bullets, and even the enemies aren't that fun to fight.

It's just a game that you could see why it became popular, but i don't see many people who didn't grow up with it enjoying it nowadays, particularly when there are the good old Doom games with far more interesting visuals, weapons and variety.

It's not bad, but it's so simplistic and bare that Doom almost made it obsolete, and the arcadey tone it has is done a lot better in Rise Of The Triad, which instead of just having some arcade elements lingering, takes it and just fucking runs with it, pretending it's a SHMUP arcade cabinet.

I'd say it kind of burns through its mileage in the first three episodes, and I'd only recommend Spear Of Destiny if you found yourself really liking the game and wanting more, SOD actually offering some more new content and only being about 20 levels long. The Nocturnal Missions I think are kind of weak, and I would recommend against the SOD sequels made by FormGen, as they're really not that good.

Catacomb Abyss came out the same year as Wolfenstein 3D. Catacomb 3D was a 16-color EGA game and just didn't have the same polish and focus as Wolfenstein 3D. Probably felt more like a tech demo or a take on the dungeon crawler genre, as opposed to Wolfenstein which focused on the guns and shooting.

>> No.5779512

used to play it heaps but it gives me motion sickness these days, and the maps were very unforgiving labyrinths with no in game map and incredibly repetitive structure. Not much unique textures, so it was all memory. Brutal Wolfenstein was the only way i could revisit the classic maps due to its mouselook freedom and change of pace that made it feel like doom instead of a a claustrophobic shooter

It kind of did, it was called WolfenDoom, which though not perfect (often it stuck with Wolfenstein 3D's original 90 degree walls and square interiors for its level design), it improved upon the formula a lot.

That said, you can still do some pretty amazing things when stuck to 90 degree walls, just with a better engine. Totenkopf SDL is a 20+ level game based on Wolf3D, and it does just about the most you can without moving on to an engine like Doom's or Duke Nukem 3D.

It's a great concept, but it suffers somewhat from being a lot like an arcade quarter eating game, in that you get a few lives and you can run through them very quickly. Level design and enemy placement rely a bit too much on memorization instead of visual or auditory clues.

It's definitely the great grandfather of FPS games, the minigun is fucking incredible. Though the limited arsenal really shows nowadays, same thing with the enemy roster. Though I think the biggest problem is the levels are flat labyrinths and some of the later levels go way overboard with becoming bigass mazes.
Music's good though, as is the sound design, I fucking love the "MEIN LEIBEN!!" and "AAAAIIIEEEEE!!!" voice clips

Speaking of music, "Wondering about my loved ones" is a really fucking strong name for a song, the song itself is good too

Wolf 3d would have been so much better with just simple texture variations, theres too many repeating textures, if they worked harder to make each area unique i think it would be a lot better and easier to navigate , thats my problem with a lot of dungeon crawlers in their case even a simple pallette swap would do to let the player know they are making progress instead of the same shit over and over

It probably wouldn't take much to come up with a subtle ambient noise generator to run in the background while the game is running. Star the generator and then launch the game. I don't really enjoy it today, you're mostly just shooting at hitscanner enemies in samey rooms and corridors with no cover. Ultima Underworld released a couple months earlier, and imo it was more impressive, complex and holds up today much better, too bad it had higher system requirements so a lot of people didn't get to play it.
However I appreciate it for what it started, I love Doom and Quke.

none of that would be very difficult to mod in, textures could easily be modified, new maps would be easy to come up with I would do the maps myself I love building and decorating things in vidya, and sounds would be very easy to add as well. we should almost make a mod for wolf like those guys working on zniggy.

I would love to be a mapper for a project like that, I would make rooms look like what they are supposed to (as well as possible with 90 degree walls) and I would also try and keep it video gamey too but not go crazy with mazes like the original. I cant really do sprite work though

Subtle changes could be interesting.
Start with ECWolf and leave in its features.
Add in some rare random ambient noise with existing game sounds.
Random texture-noise generator makes otherwise identical adjacent wall tiles look slightly unique.
Small set of overlay textures applied randomly to enemies to give them slightly unique facial wrinkles.
Wall colors tinted slightly in a new floor.
Some kind of sound to indicate there is an enemy on the other side of a door.
The ability to simply knock on a door to bait nearby enemies to come to you through through door instead of you having to go to them.
Maybe add a grenade to bounce around corners, found on random dead bodies.
Replace hit-scanner with something more fair feeling.

God, you're such a fucking waste of oxygen it's hard to put to words.

Wolfenstein 3D was controversial for its violence, and partially for so prominently featuring Nazi imagery. The Anti-Defamation League, always the champions of retardation, complained that the game featured Nazi imagery, as if it was promoting National Socialism, when the core gameplay is about shooting as many Nazis as you can for points, culminating in you getting into a gunbattle with Adolf Hitler himself, winning the game by shooting him in the face with a machinegun until he dies in a shower of gore.

The new Wolfenstein games are controversial for different reasons. Nobody that anyone pays any attention to cares about the violence, more it's because The New Colossus and The Young Blood enters contemporary political themes in incredibly clumsy and brainless ways which are unnecessary, on top of fucking sucking as games.
The New Order on the other hand, was fun to play, and managed to handle serious themes with a degree of elegance and tact, focused only on in universe politics based on historical politics, and didn't come across as unfathomably fucking tacky and ham handed. It didn't feel like it was trying really hard to impress virtue vultures.

I'll also add that the contexts of current American politics and 1930s-1940s politics are not comparable, and that attacking someone for being a stupid faggot isn't comparable to actual resistance against a genocidal warmachine. Further, nobody would have ever known who Richard Spencer was, and he would never have gotten a platform to speak with and convey his ideas through if he hadn't been punched in the face by a cuck pornstar on camera.
He has NOTHING to say that any adult will pay attention to, because he has the rhetoric and vision of a 12 year old boy, yet you people were so terrified of the idea of him that you turned him from a nobody to a D-list pundit.

Given that it's been discovered that Nerve fucked up the music of the new Doom ports by prerecording it as an audio file and then incorrectly converting it to another mhz (because apparently they can't write a little bit of code for some electronic sheet music), it's probably what happened for the Wolfenstein 3D port. That they've done this with two other ports of Doom as well suggests that maybe Nerve struggles to give a fuck.

Funnily enough, the XBLA port of Doom had a new bonus episode by Nerve, No Rest For The Living, which is popularly considered a very good set of levels, so there's been some talent there in the past at least, but that episode is nowhere to be seen in these new ports.

For Wolf3D itself, the first episode is definitely the most fun, some might say "Shareware Syndrome", but I think it's just a matter of Wolf's basic gameplay just having very limited mileage, I don't think you could really make the levels much better in E2 and E3 without having to make the game more advanced (and possibly more demanding for machines at the time).
E4, E5, and E6 exist, The Nocturnal Missions, but I really think the game well wears out its welcome by this point, the gameplay formula is still the exact same.
Spear Of Destiny is like 20 levels only, and actually does add a few new things, along with a consistent theme in level design, so it's a small breath of fresh air.

Rise Of The Triad is the best one, better than Wolf3D itself, but there isn't a lot else for corridor shooters beyond the ones you mention. There's Zero Tolerance on the Sega Genesis, which is incredibly technically impressive, but I don't remember much of the gameplay.

There's some pretty cool fangames based on Wolf3D, like the previously mentioned Totenkopf SDL Edition, and I haven't played it, but I hear Orb Of Dilaria is supposed to be good.

Wolfenstein 3D is really hard to go back to. I don't know if it's the lack of weapon movement when you walk, the lack of stairs, the fov being too narrow, or all of the previous, it's tedious and a chore to play, plus it's dizzying.

I think it's difficult to go back to because the gameplay is just so incredibly plain.
It's weird for me to say that too, because Tetris is very straightforward and simple in its gameplay but is still INCREDIBLY engaging to this day.

A bit boring in the long run. I was never a fan of the labyrinth-find-the-key-card design and was always chasing something more realistic looking. It was on every computer in my school as a kid and it kinda became a meme saying “GUTEN TAG” in the same way as the final boss in Chapter 1.

Why do you still exist here? Stay in /lgbt/ where you belong. You say nothing but nonsense.

I love Wolf3D and still play it to this day. It's especially enjoyable on mobile since the control set is simple enough for touch screen controls. I'd recommend the ECWolf Android port for this purpose.

I just think the first attempts at 3D in any genre will age poorly

It's a classic game. I know people who like it more than Doom which is something I never understood. Probably because of the Nazi settings or something like that.

Wolfenstein: The New Order was developed by a team within Machine Games, this team also made The Old Blood, and in celebration of Quake's 20th birthday, they decided to make a little episode of levels to release for free, it's a good episode.
Wolfenstein The New Colossus was developed by a different team within Machine Games, this team also developed Youngblood, and it really shows.

Machine Games have expressed an interest in doing something with the original Quake property, which if it's that first team, that would be great, I'd love to see it, but nobody knows if that team still works there, and the fear is that the shitty team that made the shitty games will get their dirty hands on Quake.

I love the sound design. The OST is fantastic and the shrieks and shouts of the German soldiers are as iconic as anything to come from DOOM.

That said, while the actual sprite work is good, the lack of verticality/visual variation makes it somewhat monotonous after a certain point. Wolf 3D is best enjoyed in brief stints.

Is there any reason to play Wolf3D or DOOM keyboard only? Ive been thinking about trying it but i was wondering if its just a step down.

You can do it, and it'll work for the base games, but they were pretty much made for using the mouse for turning.
I'd suggest a gamepad instead, it's more ergonomic and can give you the same movement.
