So I myself am looking into making something to put my collection on that is better than the top of a bureau stacked on each other. Feel free to post your own setups and advice for someone deciding to make their own.

I have something quite like pic related where the consoles are velcroed down and the wires are zip tied to the columns neatly. When I'm not using it I toss a blanket over it and wheel it into the closet. I think what you have in your pic is disgusting, I hate rooms that are set up as a permanent altar of TV worship where the TV dominates the space, even when it's off. fuck that

Unironically I got the bookshelf from IKEA (the 4 sqaure one) and put the doors on each square and cut holes in the back for the cables to go out. I have a splitter hooked up in one of the cubbies as well as a power bar with each power cord labeled for which system. I have my SNES, NES and N64 in the remaining 3 cubbies. Makes it really easy to play them when I want and I can flick off the power bar (I still unplug the ones I am not using) so they don't draw any current while turned off. It also keeps the dust off of the consoles because before I got the doors I was constantly wiping dust and cat hair off of the consoles.

Yeah but if you're doing this with a proper CRT than it's kind of a hassle. I have a Sony trinitron that's built into it's own cabinet, and while it isn't so hard to move it away from the wall, it's much more convenient to have all my consoles out and plugged into an AV switcher.

>make

Individual shelves aren't a bad idea, just looks like ass that way. Figure out the footprint of each console, and how much space they need above for either cart or disc loading. Leave 1/4" to 1"2 inch on either side and in addition above for the front loading systems. Plot out where you want everything, with an extra shelf or two for games/controllers/whatever. Use plywood for the shelves, 2x4s for the framing. Paint or stain to taste. Mount fans on rear as needed for anything you have that runs hot. Mount controllers on side as needed. Slap on more shelves as you buy more shit.

Frame it out properly and it'll hold even the beefiest Trinitron.

I apologize in advance for the big picture, phone camera does that. I'm making a very rough paper idea of what you're talking about, and yeah the difficult part will be setting it up right so that everything is laid out right. If you're comfortable making sure everything is level, there's no reason you can't do that. Just know going into it, that's very much a "measure 47 times and probably fuck up the first few" project. But if you've got wood putty it shouldn't be too enraging.

True that, I have a basic certificate for carpentry so I do realize that this is an undertaking, but that was sort of my reason for making the thread so I could gather ideas for displaying a growing and changing collection. maybe something like pic related but with a massive drawer of series of drawers at the bottom for peripherals and controllers?

This and I forgot to ask if anybody knows anything about switchboards for consoles. I've met some people who apparently made or bought them so they could switch between A/V cables without plugging in or unplugging stuff

>> No.5795775

>>5795707
If you're gonna do drawers, consider harvesting runners at the least, if not the whole thing, from a curbside throwaway or something. You can modify or replace the face piece to match the whole unit.

And if you're already undertaking this sort of thing, add a spot for a reciever. It's much less hassle to route everything to something inside a unit than to have switches stacked up or in different spots. Plus the advantage of using a remote from your seat when changing inputs.

>> No.5795929

>>5794680
Since you have no room for controllers I'd put them in a box somewhere. Loose wires look gross and are a 1 way ticket to make your setup look messy. The plushies on the top of the tv look tacky, so I'd put them on a shelf somewhere else or something. Try dusting a little bit at least once a week, and wipe down your tv with a damp cloth to get that dust off. That's pretty much it, but if you want you can move those SNES carts somewhere else and space your consoles out so they have more breathing room

Get a Tv Armoire/Hutch (Not sure what its called?) Off craigslist or Offerup. Most people are willing to get rid of them for free. Get some friends to move them, or alternatively if you live by the border go to any donut shop and tell the first three Mexicans you see you'll give them $20 to help move furniture. Most of these Armoire/Hutches were designed for CRT's, and they will often have shelves behind glass for console storage. Most even have drawers for video game and controller storage.

Here's an example, even though it says $80 I'm sure the owner wants to get rid of it and would be willing to give it away.
