It's just wall blood decals derived from Duke Nukem 3D to try to make gore on the walls clash less with things like Nashgore. I wanted to do this ages ago but couldn't figure out where to find the blood marks until I found a ZDoom resource page with all the Build engine assets ripped. Then I just turned the blood gray and brightened it a bit, scaled it up and made them into decals.

Chocolate - just like old times - 320x200, palette and all that shit.
Crispy - like slightly less old times (Doom95) with some additional limit removing 640x400.
Legacy - first one to use proper hardware acceleration. Has splitscreen. Obsolete.
Doomsday - with most bling and shit, with good performance. models are optional, otherwise limited, has some modding capabilities with 3 or 4 mods for it.
prBoom - limits removed, mapping capabilities added. All big/intricate maps past 2002 require this one (or compatible). Fastest of the bunch, will work on any toaster. Superseded by prBoom+
ReMooD - successor to Legacy. 4-player splitscreen.
Vavoom - good lighting, acceleration modding capabilities nobody uses.
3DGE, Eternity - modern features and shit nobody uses because GZDoom overshadowed them in terms of modding capabilities long ago.
ZDoom - discontinued. Modding oriented. Use software renderer in GZDoom instead.
Odamex, ZDaemon - multiplayer ports based on early versions of ZDoom without DECORATE/modding capabilities.
Skulltag - Multiplayer port with GL, based on more modern ZDoom versions with DECORATE and modding. Discontinued and obsolete.
Zandronum - full successor to Skulltag. lags behind GZDoom in terms of modding features (no ZScript).
GZDoom - port with most modding features and bling capabilities. Shit optimisation. All modern mods require one version of it or the other.

Why did game engines move on from brush-oriented mapping to some weird 'just place a mesh bro'? Serious Editor for example, I did playable stuff in SED1 when I was something like 10, it was really intuitive. But now for SED3 I also had to learn Blender to do geometry in, which only then is imported into engine. It's inconvenient.

>> No.5791772

>>5791759
Because modern-day video games require much more detail to look acceptable these days, and that detail is achieved by making models and meshes externally and importing them into the game later instead of doing rather primitive brushwork in the editor.
Mapping tools aren't made for the average joe, they're made for game devs primarily, so they pretty much expect you to make a professional map instead of a small simple one to share on mod site or play on a server.

>> No.5791828

>>5791772
Yeah, I agree that level of detail is the main culprit here. What I really don't get is mapper's place in this modern reality. Before you gave him editor+textures and he's ready to go, but now what? Does he have to be proficient in some 3D app himself? Or is it up to studio's modellers to do all geometry, while mapper's task is only to place stuff?

>> No.5791846

>>5791828
I don't even think that there are dedicated mappers these days.
You have a level designer that plans out the map's geometry and setting and such, a concept artist brings the ideas onto paper, the 3D artists make shitloads of props for it and in the end it's all assembled.
Not sure if there's a dedicated mapper that does that stuff as all you do is just assemble premade shit made by the other team members, it's probably the level designer himself but who knows.

It's a solid campaign. It's just UV going balls to the walls in an attempt to provide the ultimate challenge, which it does really well IMO.
Problem is that Doom and Doom 2 are mostly fairly easy on UV, which falsely gives a lot of people the impression they're only supposed to play the game on UV, no matter what, when in fact a lot of megawads, even early ones like Plutonia, is very much built with difficulty levels in mind, and only cranks it up for real on UV.

Alien Vendetta has a reputation for being hard, and on UV it absolutely is, but on HMP it's a lot more approachable, which a lot of people just don't realize.

There's a certain nostalgic fun about reading old mags, even ones you never read before. Second, these guides are often aesetically quite nice looking, especially the Japanese ones. Third, this is just for archival purposes. You scan it once, and do a good scan, and bam you're done. It never needs scanning again and it's available in public online libraries for centuries.

A lot of new people here probably don't know all the various tactics for playing doom. I mean, Doom 1 can be beaten fairly easily by someone who is familiar with mouse and keyboard controls, and Doom 2 is somewhat more difficult but still rather simple. Once you get to stuff like Plutonia and the WADs it inspired though? All bets are off at that point.

GZDoom can throw out fancier/cleaner graphics and dynamic lighting even if you don't use any ZScript mods or the like, but at the cost of optimization. If you're talking pure gameplay, there's basically no difference as far as I know.

As a vanilla to Boom map maker, I often playtest my maps with prboom+, Chocolate and Crispy Doom. There's a similar, identifiable pattern with the movement of the enemies in all the mentioned sourceports. When I occasionally playtest the same maps with GZDoom, they almost never do the same paths as in the simpler sourceports. Another point, though it might've been fixed nowadays (but I wouldn't know because I never use GZDoom anymore), there's a few things that differ from the original game, even with strict Doom settings applied, such as Cacodemons changing the height they're flying at when hit by a rocket, and not being able to close doors when they're opening because it was a monster that executed the action.

They have a team, there are the guys who have the "vision" of the level and detail the basic layout, then there are the other guys who add all the extra little details.
This allows moments where everybody too can feel like they're adding their own touches, for example a vision guy just imagined a hallway and then a corner, but a details guy might add blinking lights and a little diorama or something.

This allows for more detail, while simultaneously reducing workloads overall. Especially too since there are some people who prefer the "big picture" stuff and others who love details and both dislike doing the opposite.

There was an anon I saw posting here years ago who just loved doing minor details on things, nothing pleased him more than detailing tiny little lights and floor patterns and he lamented he couldn't team up with somebody who would be a "big picture" designer.

As somebody who can lazily draw a whole level concept during a train ride to work, I'd love to team up with somebody like that. As detailing corridors makes me want to blow my head off.

Literally every single person who still complains about him is doing it for theater, they're not sincere about it and are toxic people who want to drag every community they find. However by this websites very design it's hard to ferment drama because everybody is anonymous by default, which thankfully affords our hobby a degree of resistance.
In addition to being obnoxious, these people are also very cowardly since they wish to make these comments and then accuse anybody who speaks against them of being the ones who are dramatic and then abusing reporting systems.
If I had to suspect their true motives, it's matters of personal politics and they are the very same kind of person who thinks everything personal, is political. These people enter every hobby they can find and try to make them their own political clique and accuse those who resist of being the ideological enemies and just bad people generally. In this way, the Mark drama is actually a symptom of a larger problem than an isolated incident.

They are the most toxic people you will ever encounter online or in reality.

Then don't say "He's a douchebag and also considered using real life gore for the graphics", since this is dishonest.
Say "I don't like him and he didn't use appropriate gore for the graphics".

We have videogames where the enemies are nazis and communists, because people like this are usually shitty and nobody minds reenacting periods of killing them when their ideology was trying to take over the earth. This is present in the sales pitch.

That said, if we found footage of a massacre of either side and used cutouts as sprites in a game and things were not identifiable , it would still be considered too gory because you can't distinguish human beings in this case and the risk has to be taken. That said, I doubt even 1% of people who played Doom for the first time clocked who that body was of, but we accept it's a violent game.

This isn't the point though, as everybody already knows that.
The point is, you're an annoying shitstirrer who is upset this community doesn't follow along with your drama and wish to keep restarting it.

So, we'll keep using gore as appropriate and you can keep calling people the n word and maybe go someplace that welcomes drama such as deviantart or wherever you came from.

He's a bit of a dick (though why that's even a blip here is anybody's guess) so some detest him for that.

There's also BD being successful when some people don't feel it's earned that success, which causes some deep seated resentment in sections of the community that will probably never fade.

Odd that you accuse others of being ideological when you have such a binary view of this, but let's dig into why it might be okay in some instances and not okay in others.

The problem here is that "Gore is wrong" isn't a statement about one's logic, it's the end result of their logic, and so we have to examine what reasons one may be led to believing that using gore in a video game isn't okay.
One position may be that using gore is wrong because it's inherently immoral to use a person's death as entertainment.
Another position may be that using gore is wrong because you can be exploiting tragedy.

Now you might think that under the first position, you may argue that both id's use of Mussolini and his mistress's bodies and an artist using gore in a mod are wrong, and that's a perfectly valid position.
However, it's not also inconsistent or a contradiction under this position to argue that Mussolini is fine, but other gore might not be, because part of what you're arguing against is the commodification of death, taking it and using it for one's benefit, and Mussolini's death is already commodified. He's almost universally reviled as an evil dictator, and the images of his death have already been used countless times, to the point of cultural acceptance of his death as an image, and using images that haven't had the same happen to them could be seen as a worse act, because you're the one engaging in the commodification.
You can also tie the morality of using death to the violation of the rights and sanctity of the life of the person who died, and this is where my position mostly lies, because the chances of the acts of these random people to be so severe that the sanctity of their life didn't matter is incredibly slim, whereas the sanctity of Mussolini's life means jack shit to me.

>> No.5792939

>>5792914
There's degrees of acceptability to this whole thing, and if you're willing to discard bullshit about drama or stupid snide remarks and have a philosophical discussion about what acts or circumstances may make it more acceptable to ignore the sanctity of one's life vs which don't, I'd love to dig deeper into this, I personally find this kind of granular morality talk to be really interesting, even if there's some stupid drama shit I don't know or care about. If you don't want to have that conversation though, I'll just leave you with this: morality doesn't always have to be totally black and white, Kant wasn't always right about every little thing.

You are making a valid point, but looking at the issue from the wrong side.
The issue I am pointing out is that people who make this argument never stop with one thing, which we can see at this very moment, in this very thread, where their grievances towards Mark continually reappear and every time they do they'll also bring up that they don't like what they imagine his personal politics to be.

This. Is political bullshit and I dismiss with absolute contempt any attempt by disingenuous parties their desires to turn a hobby into a political star chamber so only approved members can speak. My value is the freedom of this hobby-space, to be just that and nothing else.
You can say what you like as long as you are speaking on topic about the hobby.

If the guy telling me how to detail lights in Quake is a member of Hezbollah I couldn't give a rat's ass if he is, I am interested in the unity of the hobby. If he talks about the state of Lebanon, we can talk about that elsewhere.

People who have a problem with this have historically proven to be the worst people on earth, they can take their divisive rhetoric someplace else.

Doom/Boom/ vanilla'ish-oriented "ports use Doom "pseudo RNG", that is pre-generated and is simply going by the list, so one "random number" always follows the other. Depending on the map, this RNG would start at certain point of the table and continue from there.
This is how the demos keep in synch even so they don't record every enemy action, only the players - they don't have to since with same map id and same player inputs at the same frames, monsters too would produce same results.

GZDoom uses true RNG instead, which is tweaked to produce same average numbers as vanilla, but it is much more random and thus can produce results vanilla Doom can't.

Mark is a dick, and was instigating flamewars every chance he got. Basically put he behaved like a /pol/+/v/-tard in places where it's not tolerated, were told to stop numerous times, and when he didn't - got banned. He got banned pretty much everywhere except Doomworld - only because its pretty damn hard to get banned there.

He made an overcooked mess out of his own mod that should've been done and over with 6 years ago. But he keeps injecting it with more and more stupid shit without fixing the bugs. It may look fine from the outside, but it makes a game a broken mess with balance thrown off (easy when it should not be, hard when it should not be, for all the wrong reasons), and numerous really bad bugs that break non-vanilla maps in various ways.

His fans, who don't play any other mod or vanilla, keep going everywhere and citing it as "one true way of playing doom" and bringing it up under every Doom-related video/post everywhere on the net. Go to any Doom youtube video by person who is not mainly a Doom channel, and I guarantee there will be quite a few "have you played BD, play it its how doom should be played" comments.
They are even more annoying than early ponyfags in that regard, so you can understand why most of the Doom community despise and hate them.

>A thing I've noticed in many shooters of the era, and this is no exception: lack of health. I totally get why regenerating health became a thing, Id's shooters always took care to provide adequate amounts of health for the player, but other shooters did not. The lack of health just encourages savescumming, reloading every time you get hit because you cannot afford to take damage.
>It does have a patch for HD resolutions, but it doesn't play well at all. It makes text and the HUD too small to read, it fucks the interface of interactable screens, and it makes everything too dark. When I gave up and started playing with the resolutions supported by the vanilla game, I had a much better experience.
>The game is kinda dark nevertheless, and the only remedy are single-use glowsticks, which are at premium. You'll often have to navigate in complete darkness, bumping into walls while you figure where to go next. The expansion pack explicitly addressed this, giving access to a flashlight and thermal goggles.

I heard CapnClever is trying to get it started again, which would be great.
If you haven't already, go search for Evolution Of The Wad on Twitch, there's a crude proto-series of it which was done in a slightly different way and format.

It's not as good as the series they eventually put together on YouTube, because KingDime isn't as expedient at playing (somehow, in spite of being a versed speedrunner), he plays with smear filters, gets lost, and makes bad saves, the episodes are pretty damn long even compared to the later series, because he doesn't have them skip around levels, rather playing the megawads in their entirety, and some of the theory and criticism feels slightly halfbaked at times.
I think he also doesn't have nearly as good of a presence and doesn't really make much of a presentation, as opposed to CapnClever who feels like he's much more part of the discussion and presentation. Dime just kinda feels like he's quietly playing it while the others yak.

Some of the episodes also appear missing and some of them are partially corrupted (lacking sound for brief periods or freezing up at parts). I don't know why that is, maybe it's related to how Twitch stores them, they're like maybe 6 years old or so.
It's not on YouTube, and I can see why, hoping not too many people will see them, but it might still be interesting to look at for a few people, just because.

The artist (who is basically the sole developer for most of all of it) seems quite good at still pictures of the characters, but ingame they look, well, strange, especially the animations.

Also the lore is great but it's somehow even more of a text dump than Planescape Torment is.

Feels to me like it would have been good if the developer got help in with sprites, map layout, weapons, and so on, but the way it is now, it's pretty sucky.

All things considered, besides the shit optimization making a lot of these more "complicated" enemies basically unusable on maps with larger monster counts (alongside effects and other shit), it's true. Zombiemen are supposed to be disposable Goombas that mix up fight patterns and force target prioritization, but when a Shotgunner starts rolling away and then blasting the player for higher damage than in vanilla Doom the dynamic of combat gets fucked.

Imps being able to kinda-sorta combo throw fireballs (as can Hell Knights / Barons) is already more projectiles in the air, but having them leap at close-range means all those maps that use them as a sort of per-shotgun-shell buffer in closed areas means they're a nightmare that can slaughter you in seconds if you're real misfortunate or don't have the armaments to kill them fast enough. The increased deadliness of explosives also means suicide by rocket or stray death by Cyberdemon is also more likely - which is fucking awful for maps expecting lots of explosions. Barrels 'o' Fun in particular gets its 'run from explosions' segments broken into assured death by turning these sequences into mini-nukes via combined explosion power.

And don't even get me started on the Spider Mastermind's explosive chaingun cannon. But Mark takes all criticism as a personal attack, accuses people of being whiny babies and then slams more features and broken shit in. I swear he balances for his own megawad and nothing else at this point.

>> No.5793972

>>5793963
Exactly, and rather than realizing those changes he made to the basic monsters was a genuine problem, Mark chose to call them babies.
I've definitely learned the hard way that any changes you make to the low tier enemies can royally fuck with some maps and make encounters either impossible or just really un-fun.

>> No.5793985

>>5793963
I've never liked it when mods add in leap attacks for enemies, especially pinkies. Many mappers design cramped areas filled with them and expect you to skillfully exploit their animation frames to avoid damage, but if you play with a mod that changes that, you'll instead try and back up, only to have them slide across the floor into your face. Doesn't help that the mods usually increase the pinky damage output because "big mouf mean big dommage" so you get shredded faster.

BD is not well balanced for certain custom maps, I for one won't deny this. However, that bit about barrels of fun seems off. with version 21, explosions that occur in close proximity to eachother amplify the blast, especially for barrels. that means if the barrels in that map detonate in pairs for whatever reason, basically every single thing in that room / immediate area is dead, even if you put in a couple Cyberdemons in that intro hall.

Hell Guard is obviously using placeholder sprites.
I find it interesting that the SMM got two replacements before the Cyberdemon but i assume it's because of that part in map 28 where you meet two Spiderdemons.
I also used console to summon two guards in that part because i guess their "planned spawns" for that part isn't added yet.

I never found the gunplay to be much fun in Duke. The gore was really tame and vanished immediately and the weapons themselves were never as satisfying as Doom's, with the exception of the devastator and chaingun. Those are always fun to fire.
