How do you get the original Civ 2 (not MGE) running on a 64-bit system?

... why don't you want MGE?
And you can literally google the patch for that

Slightly prefer III just because of how it looks and sounds and those samurai scenarios are awesome, but I'd say it's close between the two of them

It has fucked up AI that resets to max hostility at the start of every round. I know that there's a fan-made patch for that, but just wondering if there's a way to run the original on 64-bit systems.

The original supported Win3.x, so it runs fine in DOSBox + Win3.x
MGE is 32-bit only, so it must be patched to run on a 64-bit OS, but I could never get the videos to work (Intel Indeo codec). So I run MGE with PCem + Win98SE. Of course the original would work with PCem + Win9x, also.

The original release won't run on 64-bit Windows you will need an old machine. Civ2 Gold will work.

Conquests might add bunch of shit into gameplay, but the music was spot-on.

>>5789740
You literally can't, you complete moron, unless DOSBox counts. But given how dense you are, I expect something in tune "but I wan't to run it, not emulate it"

>he got mad at me instantly for playing a shitty game for some reason
>he now always mocks me when I'm playing a retro game
>I always get anxiety attacks when someone sees me playing anything that's not current gen
Hey I wonder why I'm embarassed to expose my tastes to people IRL and never got into any kind of music because of it, I'm gonna pay $20000 for some therapy sessions to find out.
tl;dr: the ps1 port is cool.

Hardest difficulty.
Spam cities until you meet ai.
Steamroll ai or protect against them.
If you feel like it, trigger We love the president day until all cities max out on population.
Win.
Engrossing gameplay.

The "solved" nature of Civ2 is why I generally prefer Civ4, but every game in the series is pretty good. Though I'd rather play SMAC than Civ2 now.

Dumb question. What's the difference between this and Test of Time? I have original ToT lying somewhere on the shelf.
From what I understand those are two completely seperate versions?

>> No.5791470

>>5791426
>those are two completely seperate versions
Yup, pretty much.
The game was MicroProse (under Hasbro's management) attempt to say "fuck you" to Meier and Reynolds for quitting, forming Firaxis Games and making SMAC.
So they've scrapped together everyone they still have in the studio and ordered them to update Civ 2 and re-pack it as a new game. Ultimately this means newer, better graphics and option to "colonize" Alpha Centauri rather than just sending ship to it (new map with shitty techs and nope, it's nowhere near as good as SMAC).
All in all, it failed financially and has signs of being a hack job all over the place. Not bad game on its own, but it's the Civ equivalent of Skyrim's bullshit "re-launch" just few years after it premiered on upgraded graphics.

Meanwhile back in the day, my father was always making sure what kind of games I'm playing and/or getting. Which meant the moment he learned about Civ 2, it was pretty much a sure-fire buy. We spend ages playing this together in the late afternoons.
Civ games, city builders and trading games were pretty much all I've played up until age of 12 or so. I regret nothing. Ironically, most of those games either were from premiere or ended up on my country's Ministry of Education list of games suggested as educational tools.

They never had one to begin with. And CtP never really understood what made Civ good to begin with, it was just a drab clone trying to reinvent the wheel and failing at that.
It's not like the Civ main series peaked with 4 anyway, but still, CtP is a dead-end direction.

Sup, newfag. I bet you only ever played the hex-trash version of Civ. This is one of those rare situations where I feel it's fully justified to slam on the new guys for not playing older games, because Civ 5 is a hot, steaming pile of shit for anyone with ANY Civ experience... and a fine, engaging game for newfags that just started out.
And it has the exact irreversable effect on brain function as playing 3.X and higher editions of D&D has on fa/tg/uys - it makes you incapable of playing anything else or even trying doing so.

tl;dr your taste is shit and so are you
