Kind of cheating here but Tanaka Tatsuyuki is my pick. He's known mostly for his work in the anime industry, he was the one behind the amazing mutation scene in Akira, but he has some works in the game industry. He did the art for Linda: Cubed Again as well as concept art for unreleased original version of Tengai Makyo III.

As for true game artist my choices are Kazuma Kaneko (Megami Tensei), Tatsuya Yoshikawa (Breath of Fire), Shinya Edaki/Edayan (lots of Capcom fighters), and Tomomi Kobayashi (SaGa series).

Really? I love his detailed yet dynamic style. It has a very 90s ACTION feel to it that I love.
Other boxarts from him include TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, Castlevania III and Bloodlines, Contra III.
The Japanese boxart for Castlevania IV is pretty iconic too, but I think it looks better as the cover of the CD OST (with the full image), for horizontal boxart art, I like the western art better.
I really wish the vinyl edition of the OST didn't have that fan art as the cover art and instead had either the japanese or western game cover. Wasted opportunity. Same with the other CV vinyls.

His art's great, always made me want to play Linda Cubed if it ever gets translated. Tons of personality to it and his art for Tenga Makyo 3 is really cool. I think my favourite thing about the artwork for Japanese retro games besides the quality itself is how many of them capture the imagination behind the setting of the game. You don't really get that as much with contemporary games since generally for most games the technology is there to better represent the idea behind them in the game itself, plus different artists working on stuff. You still get it in the concept art, but not as much in official art.

The trade off is of course you get cool art for a game that doesn't live up to it in many cases but that's where the imagination comes in.

Not really, concept art nowadays is just 3d and photo manipulation. Its made to look like an screenshot of the final game, useful for production but really boring and dull. Its just photos and 3d assets badly painted over.

PS2 is my favorite jrpg. Only things I don't like about it are all the grinding you have to do at the beginning, and the dams. They are good mazes, but it ends up being a long time before the story can move forward, and some of them are filled with enemies that are only really damaged by certain things. The game gets interesting again after the dams are done, tho, so if that's the part you are on then keep in mind it will get better.

I thought it wasn't unpopular to prefer the western boxarts to the japanese ones for early/mid 90s konami titles.
Or at least think they're on par with the japanese. It was one of the few artists that seemed to do it right, when most of the times Japan got the better artwork by a longshot.
Also worth mentioning another iconic guy, Susumu Matsushita, who did Adventure Island, the Famitsu covers and mascots, and many more. His style is instantly recognizable.

How do you scan these?

My thinking is that scanning should be done in .png in high resolution. Then that way when it's uploaded to sites the .jpg previews you see are taken from pngs. Rather than .jpgs made from .jpgs. The end user ONLY ends up seeing the .jpgs anyways unless they download the original source, so it doesn't matter.

This way you have a "perfect" scan that you will never need to re-do. As HDD get bigger, and online bandwith gets higher, I've noticed quality of scans go up. Look back at any scan from 2009, and it's some highly compressed .jpg that's like 50mb. All these have to be redone, but most people don't care enough to rescan that shit.

This way you scan something ONCE and do it RIGHT and then never have to worry about it again.

Thing is though, he stopped scanning around 2017, but he kept his patreon up. He still gets 12 dollars a month for doing absolutely nothing, and there's no word if he'll ever come back. Torrents die. Especially for niche material. Are you gonna seed this for 20 years? Whatever happens to exhentia, someone will back up the entire thing and it will always, always, always, exist in some form or another.

Because it eats up more bandwidth and probably loads slower on pages, same reason Ex has a filesize limit. Hence I made a torrent for the raw scans. I'm not sure what the sperging is about aside from me messing up the cover. The reason I included that message is because I've seen idiots take the JPG version of my scans that I explicitly label as "for reading or browsing" and use them in scanlation despite a superior quality suitable for editing being available. Hell, I just replaced an artbook that was sourced from a raw site that took my scans, compressed the hell out of them to fit on a file locker, and uploaded it. It's a little pet peeve of mine. If you want it, the 600dpi scans are there.

Not quite, there's many of his other works like 剣の国のアーニス that are particularly violent/erotic, but AMMO is one of his more exaggerated ones, if not the worst one, though I still haven't read a lot of his stuff as it's not easily available outside japan.
It's weird since he goes from something as comedic and childish as Choujin Nikki to standard shounen stuff like Sinbad to massively violent and gory stuff like Arnis or AMMO, he's really very talented in that sense, one of the few mangaka that have really drawn a lot of wildly different stuff.

And one by one they're getting expunged because a mod has a bug up their ass. Their "does not fit the theme of the site" rule is 100% pure subjectivity.

>game scholars will read them

It's pretty difficult to be a "game" scholar when you get into asian languages. It becomes your life, your career...

Studying Japanese demands time and by the time you get intermediate/advanced stiff grammar down youre mind demands more challenging texts in order to fuel your learning desires.

But rest assured my man, at least one loser japanophile, me, will read all of this stuff sooner or later. 振り仮名がなくても読めますから。

Nice, now we can have a torrent/rar with the entirety of the Gameside compilation books. So the backstory is that Gameside started as "Used Games Magazine" in the 90's, went under Yuge for a bit, and then Gameside. Their focus was niche and obscure games. Their print magazine stopped publishing around 2010, but soon afterwards they released compilation books of articles, bsaed on themes. Gameside proper has barely any issues scanned. Really cool magazine.

What's up with his style? It looks unique and no one else does it. It looks oddly 3D and kind of strange and off putting.

He made a full cartoon, Monkey Magic. It moves like an anime but the art direction is purely western and it doesn't gel at all.

it's pretty cool that you can use his art in the remake.
he even drew up the new character so that it wouldn't look out of place.
