why /vr/ hates this game so much?
It was a good mod.

Because it was extremely popular compared to the arena shooters that they pretend they played to virtue signal their nerd cred.

It's normalfag-tier e-sports popular now so they have to hate it.

>people here "pretend" to have played fucking unreal tournament and quake II
Only among the most popular games of the era, even people without a pc played these at friends' houses at least a few times.

Here in Latam it was huge but it was kinda like Fortnite , as in a game that a lot of normies liked, or at least guys that didn´t really consider themselves "TrVe gamers". The same people who also play Fifa, had girlfriends and didn´t masturbate to anime so a lot of goth edgylords didn´t like the game for its association with jocks and now that they are 40 yr old they still don´t outgrow the pety mentality.

Basically, is not true gaming because it lacked spoopy demons and anime waifus.

I'm convinced this whole "Half-Life vs. everything" shitposting is one individual arguing with himself.

Quake 2 sold 1 million copies. Unreal Tournament sold 2 million copies. Counter-Strike broke 11 million. Just admit you hate it because it was so popular that it single-handedly killed your genre.

It's just one guy who's baiting. At the very least, CS still takes way more skill than most modern shooters.

There's a reason I only browse /v/ and /vr/ occasionally, they're basically one blob of cookie cutter ebin trolls trying to get a rise out of each other and the rare genuine user here and there.
Boards which don't attract the interest of /v/edditors are much better, too bad all of the gaming boards here are infected.

/vr/ hates Counter-Strike because back then it took over arena shooters, and because Counter-Strike stayed relevant since then and arena shooters did not. As someone who plays both and stands neutral on this debate, I really think it's just one side being exceptionally butthurt. On a positive note, the only way arena shooters can have a chance is for id to make a singleplayer Quake game and have a multiplayer component that does not need to reinvent the wheel where it will silently bury Quake Champions. That is where they will have my blessing.

Why else would you post anonymously if not for controversial opinions or shitposting? Everyone who wants "serious discussion" is posting on r/retrogaming, neogaf, or some heavily moderated niche forum. The people who want to somewhat cut loose but still keep it civil are posting on the big retrogaming discords. The people who want to reserve the right to call you a retarded nigger for liking something they don't like are posting here.

It's because gamers have this obsession with tracing back what they think sucks back to what they think are its roots. Because CS was such a big online phenomenon and arena shooters fell out of their heyday to be replaced by tactical squad-based games, they're convinced CS "killed" the arena genre and is some kind of penultimate evil for it. Even though CS was built out of some college kid's dorm, Rainbow Six was older and gaining huge traction already, and plenty of arena-based games have continued to come out and the originals are still active. I think what it really boils down to is they can't bother learning the OG stuff and they wish devs kept making them for a current, wide audience so they could play the easy version for modern markets and still feel hardcore. Otherwise, they'd just be playing fucking Quake.
