Hello. I haven't played Doom since that skulltag vs zandronum drama. Was it like 5-7 years ago?
I have sudden urge to play Doom again. I mostly played multiplayer modes. Can you enlighten me on current situation of "how's alive the community"?
I used to run Zombie Escape and "Who dun it" maps a lot.
Is there a populated servers that still run those wads?
Also what should i use as my source port now? Is Zandronum still the king of MP?
What about server browser? I remember there was some shitty russian programm, IDE or something like that?
Is there any alternatives or big game changers in those categories nowadays?

Also really shitty question, don't get mad plz How do i make steam overlay work with zandronum+server browser? I know i can add it as a separate exe but steam won't count my play time if i do, i could also do chain .bat file, replacing dosbox in steam version with server browser exe, it will count playtime this way but no overlay then

kinda, but not in the same way. instead of a straight "does this raise your armor count" check, it factors in the effectiveness of the armor - each point of green armor is worth 0.3 points, each point of yellow armor is worth 0.6 points, and each point of red armor is worth 0.8 points. once that's factored in, then it does the "new armor points > old armor points" check.

so if you have yellow armor, you can walk over green armor without accidentally replacing it until you fall under 50 yellow armor (0.6 * 50 == 0.3 * 100).
if you have red armor, your thresholds are 37 armor for green armor (37 * 0.8 < 100 * 0.3) and 112 armor for yellow armor (112 * 0.8 < 150 * 0.6).

it took until quake 2 for the issue to truly go away.

The community is somewhat alive, Zandro is really the only MP port with a decent sized playerbase
There are servers with those gamemodes I think, but I don't know if anyone plays them anymore, it's all about Complex and MM8BDM
Zandro is the recommended MP port, but for SP you'd want Chocolate, Crispy, PR+ or GZD
Zandro comes bundled with Doomseeker, a pretty nifty browser
as for Steam, I don't know, I didn't even realize you could do that

what quake 2 does is this:

so if you picked up jacket armor while unarmored, it'd absorb 25 points of damage over its lifetime. if you picked it up while wearing combat armor, it'd get scaled down and only add 12 armor points to your combat armor. if you had body armor, you'd only get 9 points of armor. I think the benefits outweigh the downsides, but it is still strange when you think about it.

then unreal just had armor types layer on top of each other, and it was better off for it

This, I installed zandronum in an old toaster potato linux laptop yesterday. It ran the opengl renderer at 200 fps on freedoom. It has some delicious low resolutions that newer gzdoom don't have anymore (fuck Graf) I'll try some many mods on it today, to see what it can run and what are its limits, then I'll have a local co-op land party fuck yeah. It's a pretty slow and dry .wad, and it has a certain reputation for a reason.
Worth noting is that it was originally a project by one team, and then the project was absorbed by TeamTNT, who did a lot of changes, the original map authors have also stated that the maps are intended to be played from pistol start, that progressive play ruins it.

Alexander S. 'Eternal' loves this .wad, to the point that his online handle is Eternal. He took a lot of inspiration from it when making Epic 2, emulating its style of progression, however he does a substantially better job at it, and he gives it far more fun combat. It's essentially Eternal Doom done the proper way, it looks beautiful, it's huge and atmospheric, it feels like a long journey, and it's full with great and intense combat. The progression is occasionally somewhat unclear, but not even close to the point of Eternal Doom.

The amount of items is cool. I love how you kill the "imp" enemies and they fucking gib and their soul slips out. Anyone got a gif of that?

The level design is great. The levels wrap around in such smart ways. You'll have to return to lots of areas you've already been to but they're designed in such a way it's free flowing and isn't a chore. You will open a door and return to a previous area but with a new path. It isn't a chore where you need to trek back. And they throw enemies at you. I'm really liking this.

It always weirds me out how Half-Life gets credited with introducing scripted set pieces when GoldenEye is chock full of them. The entire showdown against 006 is a scripted sequence complete with banter. The game literally recreates the bottling room scene from the room complete with:

"Fate."
Then the Russians storm the room and Alec is surrounded. He surrenders and they "execute" him after a countdown. This is accompanied by dialogue between the characters.

that's the modified hud for Strain, its kinda neat but I think many things about this aren't running correctly in gz. In a compendium wad I have it had none of the weapon replacements but downloading and running the strainfix.wad itself broke the animations that the faster imps had. decided on playing it with its alternative arsenal cause it changes the shotgun, bfg, and plasma but it limits you to 100 cells and the plasma has a terrible windup time. There's this switch in Doom E3M7 (it's at 6:07 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eTGH7SdGNo)) that I always used to miss but you can run across the area it makes a bridge for if you get the position EXACTLY right and for years I thought that was just how you complete the level. I'm not sure if many other people even know this.
