What did Sega mean by this?

The reason so few Model 3 games got home ports is just because the arcade board was so absurdly powerful for the time that nothing could handle them (later on the Sega Hikaru had a similar problem, even though it had far fewer games). They were going to make an expansion for the Saturn that would allow porting to some extent, but the Saturn didn't really do so hot.

Shiny polygons were a mistake. They also ruined the look of Daytona on the Dreamcast.

Never liked Daytona 1 and probably will never. Forever meme status. Daytona 2 and SCUD Race on the other hand I fell in love with instantly when I got my hands on Supermodel 3. Seriously why does anyone even talk about Daytona 1 other than historical milestone.

The gameplay is purer, more focused on fun drifting and slipstreaming mechanics. Daytona 2 tried to go the "realistic" way with the drifting and failed miserably with the fans. This is mostly why Power Edition exists: to add the classic Hornet back in a desperate attempt to recover dissatisfied fans of the original game. Daytona USA is as you say a historical milestone, but have you really tried to play it while observing how tight its gameplay mechanics are put together? This is why it is a milestone. Sure the graphics were amazing for '94 but that's just one side of the story. Daytona USA is also a curse for Sega, because they knew they caught lightning in a bottle and tried dearly to recreate it, but they failed every time. Daytona 2 is the closest they ever got, and they ended up adding back the Hornet. Have you tried the recent 2017 game, "Daytona 3 Championship USA"? it is a notable disappointment, yes, but more interesting is the fact that the (pic related) game is a wrapper for the original 1994 game. It acts like a single game emulator, with the original romset at its heart, and it replaces all graphical and audio assets with new ones and adds some new UI elements on top. All gameplay mechanics, collision and physics are the originals from 1994. That's how much Sega has admitted defeat here. They know they can't beat their own creation.

Oh, I love Scud Race. Amazing game as well.

Okay I only played Power Edition so I didn't know about the original differences. I have Daytona 1 on XBLA which is the best port but I didn't like the driving. I have the Daytona 3 files that leaked but never bothered to run it yet.

Daytona USA was fun until Ridge Racer came out as a PSX launch game and immediately made it irrelevant. Just like how Tekken made Virtua Fighter completely irrelevant and how Time Crisis made Virtua Cop irrelevant. One third party company just destroyed all of Sega's best arcade games in one swoop.

Fair enough. The XBLA and PSN releases, while arcade perfect, suffer from control issues related to the issue of gamepads not being a steering wheel, and the obvious sensitivity differences that arise. If you're able to play a Model 2 emulator with a steering wheel, you'll have a fuller grasp of the nuances involved in the gameplay experience.

All six of the games you mentioned are excellent, and you should enjoy them instead of acting like video games are some hip trend where "relevance" means anything.

Destroyed. Sure thing, that's why Virtua Fighter became a household name in Japan, a synonym for deep, nuanced combat with an enormous learning curve and yet a very low entry point. Every new installment of the series instantly formed communities around it and the first three games even more so, spawning good amounts of spin-offs and merchandising goods.

Tekken got what now? funny hairstyles and a panda? okay then.

Zoomies these days, I swear. Did you know? Microwave ovens aren't supposed to be used as hairdryers.

Every Tekken outsold every VF. Every Tekken looks far better than VF. Every Tekken has more stages, moves, players, and game modes than VF. The animations in VF are so slow it looks like they are moving in slow motion. Tekken was a killer app for PS that still outsold a multiplat. VF is also dead now while Tekken 7 is still being played by zoomers. I like them both, but those are the facts.

I will fully admit this. Daytona on DC has a weird look to it that doesn't look more advanced than on the Model 2. The shine really just emphasizes the simple geometry.
That being said, SCUD Race looks like a game from 2003-2004. It's absurdly good looking for the time. It's shiny, but it also has a ton of detail.

Ridge Racer is solid. Bit easy vs Daytona, but good. Tekken 1 kinda blows compared to VF1 (and especially VF2).

>>5784882
until like Tekken 6, each release of VF had better visuals
Tekken was budget board shit, VF was Sega's flagship for their most powerful 3D hardware.

I still like Tekken, and unlike VF, Tekken has a future, but historically, VF has been better.

The slow combat was because the game was built around responding to your opponent's moves.

And then they cranked THE SHIT OUTTA the speed in VF3. Why do westerns hate that game again?
