After finding X from his capsule, humanity began making cheap Chinese knockoffs (Reploids) - presumably they're just so useful for stuff like manual labor that they keep making them despite the berserk factor.

The robots never really uprised and it's more like shit just keeps happening in the MMX / Zero world that keeps wiping out masses of the population - the canon X5 ending is apparently a mix between the good/bad endings where the colony crash wiped out a lot of the earth population but Zero didn't go Maverick, then there's events like the Elf Wars in the backstory of MM Zero and the end result is that in order to survive, humanity started to pile on cybernetics and machinery to themselves and the distinction between humans and reploids gradually became smaller.

You think I'm exaggerating? In the MMZ series, "maverick hunters" are literally committing genocide against the entirety of the reploid race. Like straight-up, rounding up reploids and sending them to concentration camps where they're tortured and executed. This isn't entirely true. A large portion of "Mavericks" are free will based criminals, yes, but the "Maverick Virus" is definitely a thing Wily made, that infected Sigma. From there some of his followers were infected, and Sigma integrated with the virus itself.

Meanwhile, X went through a multi-decade long simulation and diagnostic in his capsule that Reploids just plain don't. His viral defenses are more or less impregnable. He simply isn't compatible with the virus, and he isn't the type of person to go Maverick.

Zero, meanwhile, is not only infected with the Virus, he is absolutely a Maverick. Thing is, Zero was built to be a fucking murder bot berserker by Wily. After Zero is infected with the Virus while fighting Sigma, Zero's programming is essentially forced into an integer overflow. Zero is good entirely because the Maverick Virus Wily made made him so evil, he looped back around to good.

Sigma being a virus was introduced in X3 and Zero being made by Wily in X2. I guess you could say WIly Virus in X4 was an expansion on the subject

There was a Sigma / Wily connection from the earliest planning stages, but whether that means a "it was all keikaku" or just "we want to make something different but not TOO different" is hard to say. The original idea for Sigma's logo was a cobra and the mouth and fangs of the snake would have formed a hidden W... eventually Sigma's logo changed to the wolf logo we know it as today, but even that shows they kept things close as a Sigma is just a sideways W anyway

WELL I didn't want to post about the MM Zero games since it's not retro but holy shit, at least it's a BETTER off-topic. I started playing the first game and hot damn are those some short drab-ass levels and the music being so forgettable to downright annoying is nigh criminal for a Megaman game. Started playing the second one, got to the fight with whatever-Panther... I realized fighting him off-stage was the most prudent strategy, so imagine my dismay when upon successfully clearing the boss, my controls were wrested from me and I was left to drop off the platform--which the game considers a death. Yup, fuck that too. Now, tell me I'm not wasting more of my time moving on to the third game.

Copy X's reasoning was a combination of the Maverick Wars fought by his predecessor and the Energy Crisis that goes as far back as Mega Man 3. If memory serves right, in the Rockman 3 manual it's stated Energy Crystals are a rare energy resource not easily found on Earth, and it's the main source machines and Robot Masters use to work, so space mining became a thing. Remember, the MM3 Robot Masters were mainly mining robots at space stations and the game is supposed to be taking place in space colonies on the planets and planetoids in our galaxy. By the time of Copy X, the Energy Crisis was so dire, he saw trimming reploids numbers as the best course of action, lacking the morality of his predecessor because he didn't undergo 30 years of ethical testing. This is why Ciel decides to create the Ciel System by using volcanic pressure to forge a fitting replacement to the energy crystals, the Quantum Refractors.
