Play APB on MAME (or at least watch some gameplay), then try the early GTA games. APB will give you an idea of similar ideas that were around previously. You might not like them, but even so, you should realize how impressive they were at the time. That kind of game just didn't exist. The part that blows my mind is that 3-4 and all side stories were damn good, IMO even superior to their top down early counterparts. I'd say they are worth putting 5 hours in to see if you like them.

It's unreal how badly they fucked up V, textbook case of unreal engine syndrome. Also the online part fucking ruined the series. No hope of interesting and fully fleshed out DLC because muh online and muh microtransactions. When V makes you yearn for paid DLC, you know they've fucked up badly.

My favorite /vr/ one was the 1969 London add on. I had it back in the day on Playstation and had a great time with it. PS and DC GTA's had some missing features, but there is something super comfy playing with a controller.

GTA5 is "how do you do, fellow San Andreas fans: the game". Everything about it is so fake and dull but people give it a free pass because "it's not GTA4". The various activities are numerous but pointless, the pedestrians are obnoxious and do nothing but call the police, the police are just tryhard GET ON THE GROUND FUCKO larpers instead of having personality like in other games, and the overuse of scripted sequences and "dude epic summer blockbuster music LMAO" really leaves an awful taste. You can pretty much sum up the differences by comparing the music you'd hear on the old school rap stations in San Andreas and V; Radio Los Santos (San Andreas) had raw production values, controversial themes, and talked about the hardships of urban life, while West Coast Classics (V) is overproduced, radio-friendly music gloating about the "gangsta life" and all the rich people shit they finally get to do.

stop being so aggressive with your fallacious factoid, you sperg

The game engine does a 3D effect on buildings but the gameplay is still 2D - you move over flat 2D surfaces with a character that's a 2D sprite and cars that are 2D sprites. Any elevation is only a visual overlap of another 2D level.

Things cannot interact if they're not on the same level (anything falling is clearly a level transition and not an angled interaction between multiple levels), hence the games are 2D. That's why the GTA1 and GTA2 are called the "2D" GTAs.

No shit. GTA IV is a dogshit game. Only dickheads that were 12 when it came out (i.e. modern /v/ and you) think it's great because they were retards and couldn't get over how """realistic""" it was. In actual fact it was easily the shittiest GTA ever made. GTA5 was a return to form and a damn good game, but 4chan is not allowed to admit that because it's hugely successful and neckbeards have that constant craving to be special unique snowflakes. The correct ranking of the main GTA games is as follows (all PC versions):

1. GTA Vice City
2. GTA V
3. GTA = GTA2
5. GTA San Andreas
6. GTA3
>>>Power Gap<<<
7. GTAIV

God what a dogshit game GTAIV was. Slow clunky as shit gameplay, like half of the fucking campaign was a tutorial and the other half was still utterly boring and mediocre.

GTA 2 had a cut prog rock radio station called Ridiculous FM. It only had a single 20-minute-long song (in prog fashion) called YTZ by a fake band called Aori - and weirdly in 2005 it was uploaded to Spotify, Deezer, etc. for some reason.
There's more info about it and a YT link to it here - https://www.loudersound.com/features/this-song-was-banned-from-grand-theft-auto-2
I always found the radio stations in the GTA games really fascinating. The game files reference a lot of the cut tracks so we know they're supposed to be there. Probably the most fascinating discovery is that V had an early PS3 dev build leaked which used a track by a real band called White Pride as a placeholder*. Music from this band is blocked for purchase on Discogs because, as it surely won't surprise anyone to learn, this is an unironic white supremacist band - wonder why it didn't make the final game?

You didn't need to shoot all that much, true, and often you could just run a guy over, but maybe it was my keyboard or something, I just rarely could squeeze off a good shot with the pistol, and it'd be really stressful when guys shot back because often they were a bit better at it.
Many criminals IRL can't shoot worth a shit though (and shooting handguns is generally much less easy than other firearms), so in a sense this is pretty immersive.

A few times a guy might have a machinegun though, in which case I'm just really fucked, they'll wear away armor in a second and pretty quickly blow up a car.

There are multiple levels of retardation to your "argument". First of all there isn't three spatial dimensions, there are two dimensions with a small handful of different states. You can't go up and down an arbitrary amount. Secondly even if you could it would be isometric 2D because the camera can't move back and forth and around you. According to your "logic" then q-bert and sonic cd, beat em ups, every single old sports games and so on would be 3d. Also, why are you putting in this arbitrary "with gameplay relevance" clause? As long as it's 3d why would it matter? You could have a virtual building with no gameplay at all, that doesn't stop it from being 3d.

If you want to run around in your helmet zoomer saying everyone is wrong because those are all 3d then that's up to you but the real world does not consider them 3d and stop coming here asking people to explain the most basic concepts of videogames imaginable.

Also, the tank controls suck and, if anybody here really have beaten GTA2 you would shiver everytime you read the words "penal ties!". Fuck tank controls and fuck the rednecks

Still, GTA2 is one of my favorites (behind only VC and SA) and gave us something that make my sister and me giggle to eachother everytime taxi drivers are mentioned

in 2 you can at least look ahead with the alt key but this also fucks you during penal ties since it respawns the prisoners

funniest intro to a mission though

LCS/VCS are brilliant.

LCS is just a revamped GTA III in my view, but VCS goes all out on a load of ideas they'd clearly had for ages but didn't use them.

they were
but the roaches at Sony had to hurt Chinatown Wars sales on the DS via piracy, causing Rockster to be discouraged to do more topdown GTA.

i mean, we got a port later but that was the end of that

>GTA5 was a return to form and a damn good game
It was okay, not great not terrible. It had cool features but it could've easily been expanded upon. The actual exploration content felt lackluster compared to SA and so did the map size. There's no way you can rank GTAV that high on your list. It's at least higher than GTA3 but lower than GTASA.
And you seriously can't rank VC that high unless it's for nostalgia purposes, come on. That's not the objective ranking. It's just purely subjective at best. Vice City stories is way better than Vice City itself.

GTAV isn't the overly bad game everyone makes it out to be, but it's not that good either. The game was a series of missed potential one after the other, with most of the interesting single-player ideas going straight into the Online, most of the stuff like San Fierro and Las Venturas basically being removed from existence in the HD Universe, etc. Return to form is the worst descriptor you can give it when the game is just an over-the-top HD version of SA but with better graphics, half the map erased and some extra cool content sprinkled in (like the UFOs) and parts of the content being removed and being online-exclusive.
Rockstar really fucked the game over with their greed.

IDK about your rankings system however, GTA 4 can go fuck it's self..
I remember starting the game, playing the first mission and then going about the city trying different cars. After not being able to find a single car that didn't drive like shit I took the game out of the tray and never again played it.

It's always subjective, of course. For example, I really didn't enjoy SA since I don't like rap and the whole black ghetto culture vibe, but I love VC because I really enjoy 80's music and the whole 80's vibe

So the first gta I played was vice city and enjoyed it and really e noted all the gta since then but I decided to go back to the original games and man I wish I was not like a child back then cause I would have played the hell out of them. 2 is fantastic I wish Rockstar would do more top down games like they did with Chinatown wars.
