>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 5th Gen (+Dreamcast) games on back. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright. Tips'n'Tricks™ coming soon.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for other's choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

Every advantage people talk about re: CRTs is represented the strongest in them other than lag and rendition of 240p scanlines.

So color, contrast, black level, "3d effect", response time, etc are all exceedingly good. With tweaking via service menu this is further magnified from factory settings.

There is even an effect called "micro contrast" that is my own form of lunacy that possibly gives the image the je ne sais quoi that is not seen with other technology.

Lag is worse when they are fed a non-native signal, as it would likely have been with Shadow Hearts (a 480i game).

Had to have this shipped after an event I did. UPS clearly dropped it more than a few times. Anyone know directly what is wrong with this. UPS is probably going to cover it for insurance, but I really don't want to replace a few hundred dollar monitor.

It is a 21 inch viewsonic P8 series pc monitor. Picture was perfect but now it clearly has this strange color issue going on. Although I have worked on some CRTs, usually it was nothing looking like this.

It is hard to see because of the photo, but the purple bar on top right is the most obvious. The rest of the screen is also sort of tinted in random spots (the ones on the left are icons under the transparent UI) but even on the left it is discolored.

Thanks homies.

This is FUD. Just an exaggeration of opinions posted over the years by users who have owned several CRTs and say "large CRTs generally have worse geometry". That got twisted over the years into some notion that this meant to avoid large CRTs.

When people say large CRTs have worse geometry that means on a grid pattern you will see what warping exists more easily due to the size, and there is a significant increase in some cases. What this does not mean is that the large CRTs are broke or useless or whatever. Turn off the grid pattern and actually go to watching or playing content and you never notice.

There's also some FUD that large units are more likely to have broken solder joints and circuit boards. While this would have to be true from a physical point of view due to the cross-sectional strength of the materials involved, there no reason to think any large unit is a ticking bomb ready to quit on you. Especially if it is a professional grade CRT. Those were built to be moved often. If I found a big CRT that I liked I wouldn't even think about this notion that they are less reliable.

That sounds really beautyful as well. I had an IBM 22" trinitron years ago that I loved, and like a fool put it out to the garbage when I got the GDM. I do recall similar frequency from it as well. It sounds amazing. As for the GDM, it does hit 140hz @ 1280x800, but I had one game (non-retro/60hz) that just didn't seem to run correctly that way, and found 120hz more than acceptable, so I never changed from it. I would guess that both my monitor and yours are very similar in quality, but mine has a slightly lower frequency due to the larger real estate. Take it easy, and don't get so frustrated. I don't know what it is about my old desktop photo, but man it drives /vr/ crazy. They always go after the exact same things also. It is somewhat funny to me, so I just keep dropping it. Thanks for the laughs!

When I had a CRT projector I played some racing games on it in 1280x960@100hz. On a 80" screen.
It was nice but wasn't nearly the mind-blowing experience I wanted it to be.

I have an old workstation monitor that will do 1024x768@100hz. Would probably do 1280x800 if I tried (with incorrect ratio or squeezed raster "letterboxing"). It is indeed very smooth playing new games like Doom on that.

FW900 sure is a nice monitor and I'd love to have one, but what it can do for me vs what say... a 34XBR960 could do for me is a pretty big difference. I've owned one in the past and really miss it. Miss it more than the GDM-5410 I used to own (it developed g2 drift and was damaged in storage).

The last two that sold on ebay were $80 and $350. For people who are working jobs that pay better than minimum wage this is a cheap toy.

In other hobbies $1000 isn't even enough to get your foot in the door. In CRTs it's enough to get you "god-tier" performance.

Plus shipping. I had my second GDM shipped to me. I payed well over 150 for shipping....and it still didn't arrive in one piece. I picked up this one in 2001 at a going out of business sale of an architectural firm an hour from my house. For $100 I got one, and my friend got one. He has since lost his, but that is how life goes. They were dirt cheap back then, and the owner appreciated the cash. In 2019, I would never consider buying one. Not at the prices they want, knowing how many hours are on it. Getting a good one will cost you over $600+ shipping easily, and there is no guarantee of the usage. I know Uncle Vito sometimes comes across new ones, but he has people that get them first. He is the only person in the USA I would trust when looking for one. You will pay a premium, but you will get exactly what you paid for.

>If I wanted one all I would do is put up a thread on Neo-geo, shmups, or BYOAC and make a generous offer.
My concern at this point is the age & usage, not the physical appearance. One thing that is certain is that these monitors specifically fail. It really takes a special person to maintain them with windas and a color calibration kit. The best of their years are long behind them, and in a way if you didn't have the opportunity to enjoy it over the last 20 years, it is pretty much too late to start. IF I was shopping for a high quality CRT today, I would take the best one I could find, and I would make a list of a few models, none of which would be a sony unless I could totally verify that it was truly taken care of more than just dusted off occasionally. Uncle Vito is a regular over at [H]ard OC, and I don't know what he did for a living, but he always has these in stock, and usually has parts. The internet is blowing its collective load on PVMs right now, so PC monitors are last years meme.

You're overstating this issue. I have owned several Sony PC monitors the last few years and they were all fine other than the brightness problem, which is correctable. And some of them never had it at all.
The existing FW900s will continue to work for years to come.
>I could totally verify that it was truly taken care of more than just dusted off occasionally.
This is literally you have to do. Other than keep the monitor out of the elements. Will color drift out of perfect reference levels over time? Yes. But then you can just put them right back.

You are more of a risk taker than I am....but by the same token, if I saw a nice looking CRT monitor at a local sale, I would buy it if the price was right, but I wouldn't be spending more than what I would for a parts monitor. I would love to find a 22" that was in decent shape, but they are getting more and more rare to see at yardsales and auctions. Another minor issue is that we are getting to the point where contemporary gpus need an external DAC. I don't know when ATI did away with it, but I have a GTX980ti just to tide me over for the next decade. The external DACs seem to be hit or miss on high refresh rates. Some work, and some don't work as well, and it can vary from product to product and even individual runs of the same item.

However, these connectors are nothing fancy. You can find a small piece of plastic, drill holes, and then glue in some pins to create a connector if you really have to.

Or do I what I would do: stick the wires directly into the holes until they make a good connection and then hot glue them in place with female BNC connectors on the other end.

Or take off the back and solder wires straight to the pins...

Fixed up a 31kHz monitor I got from an old workplace and aside from a slight purple tinge that color adjustment just doesn't seem to nail, I'm pretty happy with it.

Wasn't able to find much info on the thing, it's an NCD NC1782AA. It has two channels and interestingly one is 5 BNCs for RGBHV on separate lines, which is handy. I'm concerned it isn't going to last long (or I don't understand CRTs) because there is an ever noticeable buzz coming from where the neckboard joins the tube, and the inside of that portion of the tube visibly glows when it's on.

I would try with it on and off. But I guess if you are using a CRT I would turn the emulation stuff off for that.

It most likely emulates how gamma and color reproduction are done on a CRT, but for a more current display. Approximation of the differences for a more authentic feel. I would guess that some options like that are required to stay on if you use an LCD though.

Similar options exist for some old Genesis emulators to do transparency while still keeping the emulation crisp elsewhere

So here's my question. How do I stream 240pRGB from my PVM to OBS? I've had success streaming S-Video, but there's no RGB adapter bundled with the USB3HDCAP.

You can use a BNC-to-VGA adapter, just feed composite sync to the H-sync pin. But it needs to be clean TTL sync, not luma or CVBS. The other problem is that the newer drivers don't work with 240p RGB or YPbPr, so you have to use the older, buggier drivers. I think the last one that supported 240p was version 140.

Probably put at least a hundred hours of PS2 on this thing alone, not counting any other console. The only thing I'll say is to make sure you get an 8044 or 8045 cause the 8041 and 8042 use a lower TVL tube which is really soft. The HR tubes in the 44/45 aren't super sharp but at 450tvl they're just the right amount if you ask me.

I absolutely agree, but once you know about it it's hard to ignore. Especially the hump and corner issues on wega sets. There are other sets out there which wont have such geometry issues and are just as vibrant as a trinitron though, like the sets jvc and toshiba made. It would be nice to see the crt community at large get over the sony fanboyism which is mostly fueled by decades old marketing bs.

As far as I know JVC and Toshiba never made any super fine pitch equivalent 16:9 CRT HDTVs.

However, they did make some CRT HDTVs that had more coarse screen pitches that are very interesting and neglected.

Don't. The OSSC/xrgb is far superior with PC CRTs.

I own all three and a the XRGB3 and the 2x is great for specific situations, but I think it is aimed at people that have ps1/ps2 or similar and their new tv just doesn't like the resolutions. Instead of buying separate hdmi cables, you get one box and be done.

5791270

Hello everyone, I'm not too sure if many people will be familiar put a situation that I'm currently having because my TV is a simple consumer CRT and not a nifty Sony PVM or anything like that. Bought it for cheap about a year ago but unfortunately it did not come with the original remote control. It may not have s video or any sort of cool video inputs aside from basic RF and composite, but I'm fairly content for the most part, after all I just wanted to play my older systems on the appropriate TV, helps it also has a working DVD.

Now then, my issue is I have not been able to access any of the menus such as brightness contrast etc, even with this RCA universal remote control. I did a little research looking for alternatives and looking for the original controller for the TV, an Emerson EWC13D4, but they seem oddly overpriced with only having ran into the original controller on eBay once when I had first picked up the TV. There seems to be an alternative that lists my model, but again it seems to be a bit more pricey that I'm willing to pay for blindly without knowing whether or not it actually works. I may bite the bullet one day, I'm just wondering if any of you have this TV and may give me any advice or alternatives to what sort of controller I should buy.

Thank you for your time.

Did you read the user manual? It doesn't look like there is a proper menu for display settings. It seems you just press the arrow buttons until the desired setting slider pops up, then you adjust it that way.

>> No.5791286

Is there not a menu button on the front? I've never experienced a set that you can't access basic adjustments like brightness etc via a menu button. Often if there is no menu button it'll be accessed by simultaneously pressing two buttons but they normally have this marked on the controls. No reason a universal remote shouldn't be able to access the menu either as it's a pretty standard function.

This. My friend was doing this almost 15 years ago so he could play his SNES collection on his 36" JVC. Looked great.

You can make the argument that Component isn't QUITE as good as RGB, but consider the following; at this point the amount of wear and tear on any given CRT is probably going to amount to a greater disparity in image quality than the difference between RGB and YPbPr. My advice is to spend your time hunting down the most pristine TV you can, rather than taking any TV and trying to make it marginally better.

Are you running a modern PC? I'm trying to figure out what the best way to run DOSBox in 640x400 in W7 is. Custom resolutions in nvidia control panel isn't reliable for me. It disappears after switching to something else.
CRU and HotKey Resolution Changer seems to work.
