There are certainly female NES protagonists if she were to dig a little deeper before complaining. Although there's tons of "best bud" relationships one might imagine to mean more there is no reason to depict characters sexual orientation in children's media so it's nearly always indeterminate as is often the case with gender itself especially in early generations' titles
