Violence against women. Same for this >>5757530 and Poison (a burger feminist association threatened to sue them until they did that)

It's not questionable either, it's how REAL LOCALIZATION should be done, clearly.
Things came full circle as the practice is now part of Sony of California's guidelines today. They were the party that demanded women NPCs in Assassin Creed be invulnerable.

Dynamite Headdy is the golden standard for modern game localizations.
>burger team hates the immature story so they make up something different (usually edgy or serving a greater cause™) for shakespearian audiences
>burger team hates spending money so they cut as much as possible from the work they're hired to do to minimize "expenses"
>burger team loves money and despise the playerbase so they make it as tedious as possible to finish so that it's rental unfriendly
>burger team hates chinks so they completely redo any packaging that's too "different" or "foreign" looking, even if that means getting people who can't draw to do it, or hire the first homeless person they see on the streets to do the artwork (Phalanx)

>>5757524
>Beyond Oasis
But they made it more diverse! Leo became Ali, despite the medieval setting. To compensate, the clearly black character in the sequel is now caucasian on the american package art (which has 100% less anime too!) Don't you love it when localizations "mix up" stuff?

Except the difficulty changes, I prefer what they did to the western release of Dynamite Headdy. Those pieces of dialogue slowed the pace of the game and didn't add anything of susbtance (an you could read the story in the game's manual anyway). The robots were good designs which fit the artstyle of the game. And the addition of the H letter inside the spotlight made much easier to know your enegy level.

Also, the puns of the stage names were funny and more memorable than the japanese titles.

I would, unironically, do this, but also make them so they can attack the player and "promise" to fix it Soon™ and then remove all women from the game instead.

Everyone loses. Players get fucked, game gets review bombed, hits the news and people start squabbling, players in pro-consumer countries are entitled to refunds, and women don't get represented.

If it's important to the plot then you have to do it, but if it's a trivial change then there's no reason not to change it in localization. >>5760903
It really only matters to the game that its a restaurant and okonomiyaki is fairly similar to pizza (a round bread disc with toppings) so "Neo Kobe Pizza" is a perfectly apt translation

It's also worth noting that in all this time, in this thread full of smug weebs none of them pointed out my mistake until I had to do it myself. I submit that this is proof positive these changes actually sacrifice nothing and are only protested as an act of mental masturbation.

Generally correct. It's also why regional dialects and even foreign culture is starting to decay with the rise of the internet in western countries. Everyone is slowly gravitating towards the American cultural influences without even realizing it because of the promotion of the culture and the fact that it fits the lowest common denominator, but minor quirks will always still surface before either fading away or being devoured by a ravenous mass who will proceed to strip any unique value it had and integrate it with everything else they know.

This is simply inevitable, however -- the same thing has been happening throughout time when smaller groups come in contact with larger ones. They might fight assimilation, but the more the two stay in contact, the closer they're going to draw together. Generations later, the two become mostly indiscernible from each other unless one specifically tells you what differences exist, which are now assuredly minor.

This is actually a really big compromise, the reason localized natsume games had the small static logo is because they were saving as much space on the cart as possible in order to ensure the text localization can actually fit since any language that uses a non-asian alphabet usually requires a lot more characters to represent the same words in Asian characters.

They're much more comfortable sitting at home, whining about irrelevant things that some Americans do from what they've heard. crossing the street by foot at an inappropriate place, one that would impede vehicle traffic unnecessarily. That kind of thing is illegal here, though if you dig beneath the surface, you learn that it really stems from the auto industry lobbying to lock out other forms of transportation.

You'll also find that actual jaywalking charges are rare. It's usually only in a place where the police policy is to be a hardass, most cops don't give that many shits. It's a pretty stupid law anyway.

Now then, I gotta address how absurd the bomberman series is on Game Boy. In Japan, the first GB game is called Bomber Boy, but in the US, it was turned into Atomic Punk, and has this horrendous artwork added for those good old-fashioned "american stylistic sensibilities" (notice the abbreviation of that phrase). Then, Bomberman GB gets released in Japan, and in America they pull a fuckin tectoy and turn it into a Wario game called Wario Blast (TCRF comparisons are amusing here). Then, they finally bring an unedited bomberman here, Bomberman GB2, but since we never got the first one (by its own name anyway) it gets renamed to Bomberman GB, aka the first game's actual name. Then Bomberman GB3 didn't even come out in the US. At least they finally fixed shit on the GB Color.

When was the turning point exactly, where US localizing companies stopped trying to change every fucking thing to appeal to "Americans"? Was it the success of Pokemon? Or maybe FF7 telling everyone it was okay to play it straight on releases?

You would think that almost 10 years later, especially in the late 2000s, when bilinguals were no doubt more common, that they would have done a more reasonable script. It's not the first time Natsume did something like this. Apparently Shatterhand was the original version of Solbrain and not the other way around as it is generally assumed. The game was supposed to be titled Metal Commando K in Japan, but they slapped in a toku license when Natsume licensed the game to another publisher.

I've also learned the other day that the Game Boy Kunio-kun game that was released in the US as Double Dragon II was the reskin. According to Koji Ogata, a veteran pixel artist, the Double Dragon version was the original.

I would cut Kemco some slack on this one. They did many attempts to bring it unmodified to the West. An unedited translation of Mickey Mouse 3 was leaked as a prototype.
The one game that got out intact took the involvement of Nintendo as the publisher, and released for the original Game Boy in 1998, five years after the Japanese version (Kemco seems to have just given up on that series by then)

Disney was just a bitch to work with and had so many conditions about everything, down to which death animations are allowed, and that's just the Japanese version. For America it was compounded by more compliance scrutiny, and complicated exclusivity contracts (Maui Mallard in Japan was by Eurocom/Disney Interactive, published by Capcom, under license from the NA publisher Nintendo, just like Eurocom could not release their version of Aladdin on SNES but could on NES and the Game Boy Color)

I love how they continued Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle to its fourth installment on its own, then a fifth game with yet another swap, Woody the Woodpecker.

This is worth its own complicated chart just like series like Adventure Island and Falcom's Legend of Heroes.
