So, my dad's turned into a senile sack of dementia pudding and I've been going through his old stuff.

Today's dust-covered gem is an (inflation adjusted) $5,350 laptop. No idea if he paid that much for it or if he got it cheap later on, but if he did drop that cash on it, I guess his brain rot started long ago.

This thing's an absolute beast for its time. On paper, it's a marginally higher spec machine than the desktop I was gaming on into mid 2002, and its small, dull screen is, bizarrely, pin sharp and goes all the way up to 1400x1050.

Someone has tossed Windows XP on it, which seems like a bit of mistake to me. It's a little sluggish where as I'm sure 98SE would run like lightning on this thing.

Does anyone have any recommendations for what I should do with it?

With 98se and properly configured dos drivers you should be able to run nearly every /vr/ pc title. I have a similar laptop I picked up for $10 and it has a terrible time with Deus Ex's textures that Rage Mobility has no 3D acceleration whatsoever so it brute forces everything in software mode.

Hardware Deus ex on a 90's card that isn't a voodoo is pretty much always a no go, but at 650mhz, I'm thinking software might be promising.

>>5747214
The latter. I'm leaning toward putting 98SE on it and hunting down games that don't play nice with windows 7+

>>5747196
Sorry, but that thing has pretty shitty hardware for any 3D accelerated games. See

>I'm thinking software might be promising.
If you don't mind playing in 640x480 on a horribly interpolated screen, with 15-20fps. I would suggest playing unreal engine games on a modern PC, they work well and even have directX 11 renderers available

>Does anyone have any recommendations for what I should do with it?
Install Windows ME, it works well if you don't plan on booting into DOS and is much more up to date than 98SE. Make sure to install the drivers, especially the intel speedstep one else the CPU will run at 100% all the time.
I guess you could play DOS games if you have a sound blaster compatible sound card. Make sure to get VxD drivers, not WDM ones for it.

So?
I work with demented people every day, and talking about your father like that is atrocious.
Do you have any clue what your father will end up as?

He's going into a home like mine where he'll need to be bathed by other people, watched 24/7, he'll be stressed and confused which will only get worse until he needs heavy medication that'll make him feel nauseous and dizzy. He will never enjoy himself no matter what we do, music, movies, he won't enjoy it and he just wants to go home to his wife and family. We'll lie to him constantly and pretend we really are Tommy from next door so your dad will come along after dinner without needing two sets of strong arms to pull him to his room, but he'll always know something is up. He'll always think about how he needs to go to work, forgot to kiss his wife, has to pick up the kids from school, or do groceries. He'll always feel like that even when we manage to calm him down, stress will wreck him.

Eventually he'll stop understanding human decency and piss and shit himself frequently. Then if he's unlucky he'll slowly become bedridden where he'll be fed a constant dose of morphine because your stupid ass saw him blink once and thought he recognized you, after which he'll lie in bed in a delusional state for weeks, while we roll him around and check his body every single day.
Then eventually he'll choke to death, simply have a painful as fuck heart attack and die, shit himself to death, or simply have an accident like throwing himself out of his bed and snapping his legs.
Maybe he'll have two or three heart attacks because the family wants him to be rescued every time, prolonging his pain and torment as long as possible for no possible reason.

Alzheimers is an awful disease, if I'd ever get dementia I would unironically blast myself the moment basic tasks become difficult.
Making light of your father's suffering is terrible, even cancer or aids in the '70s would've been a better way to end his life.

>> No.5748013

>>5748000
>simply have a painful as fuck heart attack and die
In fact heart attacks in elderly people are often asymptomatic unlike with middle aged people.

>> No.5748073

>>5748013
Yes but it tends to be very deadly for people with a severe illness like alzheimers, and some people think it's a good idea to go over the details of their relative's stay, and decide that if they would be to get a heart attack, it's better to keep them alive and prolong their suffering until they get multiple heart attacks and then die after it took several doctors to try and keep them alive.

Oh an OP, your dad will not care about your mom in any way, elderly people with severe alzheimers tend to sleep with each other a lot for no reason, we often find them in each other's bed, sometimes with their dick still hanging inside their neighbor. So if your dad is in any shape or form very fond of your mom and sort of traditional, imagine what he would think if he knew what he was doing to himself and your mother on those occasions. And don't expect any of the people working there to give a shit, they think it's funny, and there's no real laws or policies to protect your dad from showing this behavior, if he can walk around he's free to walk around.

Oh for sure,I'm qualified and passionate, but I've seen people straight up sitting on a patient's bed, reading their books while chowing down on candy that their relatives had brought over.

Don't go cheap, check them out, do some research yourself, and be upfront and assertive to get what your relatives deserve.
Their time there will be absolute garbage and their lives are practically over anyway, but at least they'll go out with a bit more decency.

Mates, if I didn't laugh about it, I'd spend all day crying. I baby-sit the poor bastard 24/7. It's basically a full time job just to keep him from literally burning the house down or obliviously wandering into traffic.

If I didn't care about him, I would ship him off to a care home and forget about him, not sacrifice a marriage and my career to look after him.

Alzheimers is exactly why we need euthanasia. Everyone in my family agrees that their greatest fear is losing themselves and becoming a living vegetable.
I myself know for sure that if I ever lost my sense of self I'd want to be put down, because that's not me anymore, that's only a creature partially emulating me. Decaying with the biological equivalent of bit rot. Not even truly sentient.
It sucked but I had my 19 year old cat put down as soon as the vet confirmed the leaking fluid in his stomach was terminal and he had organ failure. If I hadn't then he would have wandered off to die by himself without having had a proper goodbye anyway.
I feel like, had I not made the snappy call to do it there and then I might have changed my mind and that's cruel. To leave him to suffer like that. Call me crazy but I felt like my cat was ready to die that day. And I feel like society is cruel for letting people with dementia/Alzheimer's get so bad they regress to an infantile state or worse and punish those who dare act out someone's
wish by putting them out of their misery.

As for the laptop. DOS-ify it. Play X-Wing vs Tie Fighter if it can. Thats a good game.

Anon. Don't feel bad over others trying to make you feel like an ass because you're shittalking your dad a bit. Doesn't mean you don't love him any less.
I look after my brother who's disabled with autism and he pisses me off a lot, but its different to Alzheimer's. He slowly gets a little better as he gets older. Can say a little more, do a little more. Its bad enough dealing with it that way round, the other way round is total hell and you deserve to vent.

OP here. I tossed Battlezone (1998) and and Drakan (1999) onto it and both seemed to run pretty well. Drakan was a little choppy when there were enough enemies on screen, but it was still playable.

I'm pretty sure Deus Ex and possibly even Unreal Tournament are out of the question, but those run fine on modern systems anyway, and I'm not really interested in loading this thing up with games I could easily run on my main PC.

Is there a list, anywhere, of 90's games that won't run/won't run properly on modern machines? I know GoG has muddied the waters on this with their re-release, but this old laptop is really quite lovely and I just want to give it a reason to exist.

I don't know what you're talking about, despite earlier plans support for both Win98 and ME ended on the same day in July 2006. For example, the last distribution of DirectX and the patch sets available for IE6 SP1 are the same.
It's just more convenient for shipping more drivers for 1998/99 era hardware out of the box, for example USB mass storage and (bad choice for retro gaming, of course) Intel AC'97 audio. Dual booting Windows Me and a fleshed out DOS (e.g. PC-DOS 2000, OpenDOS, FreeDOS) using a boot manager is a common setup for Pentium MMX through III era laptops.
