Try a time-lapse!

Pic related is the longest time-lapse I took so far: 14 hours of a root growing through wet soil. Taken with a macro lens. If you look closely, you can see tiny secondary filaments growing from the main root at the upper section.

The initialism GBC is already taken by the Game Boy Color. The game boy camera was originally released as the "game boy pocket camera" in japan, so GBPC is less ambiguous.

I noticed that for long time lapse videos, the gbpc took longer than expected to finish the sequence. Shot the clock with 5-minute intervals to see if it was lagging behind, and it is - the indicator for seconds would be standing still if it wasn't.

At the risk of being called a shill, bennvenn makes a gameboy printer emulator for $12.99. Basically you hook that dongle to your computer and say "print" on your gameboy and it sends the image to your computer. It works pretty good, but first setup is annoying as it is an unsigned driver. Google helps but it's sometimes not simply plug and play depending on your setup.

game boy player is certainly the most fun way to use the gbcamera. Personally I use a backlit Pocket, but the mod is such a risky pain in the ass that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. If money is no object I'd go with those freckshack gbcolor displays. It is really, really nice to have a backlit gameboy you can take selfies with, especially if you are showing the camera to normal people who can't into non-backlit screens.

The greenhouse:
No botanical garden would be complete without a tropical greenhouse, and no such greenhouse would be complete without a display of giant water lilies. These lily pads measured about 1 meter across and are apparently buoyant enough to carry 50 kg of weight! In the foreground, you can see one of the pads which has been turned upside down...

>>5749346
>>5749534
Very nice. I've considered this approach too, but I lack a quality DSLR camera and the proper lighting setup. What equipment do you use? I think you captured the look of an actual gbp LCD quite nicely. I've also noticed the glare, I'd try to make the lighting setup as well as the positioning of the gb and the camera as consistent as possible. If you keep the display as level and in-plane as possible, you can simply crop out the circuitry around it to get a simple, clean image of just the display.

This specimen was the biggest Monstera I had ever seen, it was easily 4 to 5 meters across! Some of the lower sections of the stem had turned wooden, something I had never seen in a potted indoors Monstera.

The inside of the greenhouse was actually very difficult to photograph with lots of low-contrast, diffuse light. Having no colours to work with made it worse. This shot captured the tropical atmosphere on the inside best.

And that wraps up the greenhouse! Next up will be the Japanese garden. I'll be posting again later this day.

>>5749380
Guilty as charged. The way I rip my pictures (through the slide show option) gives me simple, black frames on all images. Using custom borders adds more steps and I'm often too lazy to do so. The variety would help easing things up a little, the thick black borders can be kinda dull.

One from the japanese garden, though I'm less satisfied with this one. Another stone lamp on a gravel bank in the foreground, rock formations and waterfalls in the background, although I feel that this section is somewhat hard to discern.

Water is another tough subject. Either it'll end up highly reflective like in this one >>5749098, overexposing your image, or it'll turn pitch black like here >>5750438, giving you little contrast to work with.

>So how do you do it?
I rip the SRAM off my camera and put them into retroarches "saves" directory (need to change filetype from .sav to .srm) and fire up the emulator. There's a game boy pocket-style LCD-shader, which I have modified to my likes and saved as a preset. I tried to get it as close to the actual gbp lcd as possible, but I feel my dark grey and black don't contrast too well, which makes the pics look darker than they should. The rest is simple, I just screenshot every pic during slideshow mode and crop/rename them via batch-processing.

In defense of my SOULLESS upscaled b/w printer emulator pics, it is a really wonderful thing to be able to digitize these pics at all, especially when it comes to sending them to friends. The GBCamera is something that makes people say "I always wanted one as a kid" or "I never had a printer as a kid." When friends snap selfies, they go bananas when I send them the pics even if they maybe not as beautiful as they could be. and who doesn't like 24.1kb BMPs?

I legit thought that was some kind of filter because it looked so perfect. These are getting damn good. I might take the screen off my gb and try similar. It would be neat to see the same technique used with all models of gameboy, including gbc. In fact, I can't believe no one has done this yet.

There were stone sculptures scattered throughout the gardens. This one was a black monolith standing in a circular field of low-growing, silvery plants covered in velvety hair (presumably Stachys byzantina). The place had an eerie vibe to it.

I used to disregard the wide-angle lens, but it came in really handy here to fit the whole circular planting into the frame. It's true what >>5749346 said, if you center the lens attachment ring on the apparent center of the opening of the exterior white plastic, it will be out of center of the optical axis. It helps to attach the ring slightly lower, bringing it more in-plane and in-axis. Also, the lenses always have some leeway once attached and need to be properly centered. I've actually thought about grinding down the exterior plastic to create a level surface to attach the lenses to...

>>5753256
>I feel the filter/photograph approach will help with the blending of the grey levels and can give a picture a lot more depth.
I think the natural, gentle ghosting of the real LCD helps a lot. Ghosting makes certain pixels darker, meaning you are technically seeing more than 4 shades on a real screen.
So here's my setup (your term "photography setup" is giving me way too much credit). On the left is my gentle-wake alarm clock which houses an incandescent bulb inside the plastic shell. I hold it well above and behind the camera for a even, bright light. Those circles of paper are glossy but I'm sure any white paper would help reflect light. The lens is 17-85mm and I have it zoomed in all the way to fill as much of the frame as possible while still keeping the LCD in focus. Keeping the correct distance between the GB and camera is obviously important so I might build some kind of holster to avoid readjusting things every time I pick up the GB. As I mentioned earlier, the LCD has been superglued to the board to protect its ribbon cable, and also to keep it in line with the camera (you may consider doing this too). Not pictured is a big black sweater that I lay on the camera to reduce glare.
Taking the photos doesn't have to take very long. I feel like it could be streamlined. Once the LCD is in focus, the usual issues are getting the light in the right place, and dust. If I had a holster to keep the GB at the right distance, a kind of stand for the light, and knew exactly what aperture/exposure was appropriate, then taking pics would be fast.
>Personally I like the tint and wouldn't desaturate them
In order to make these pics really pop, I have to muck around with color settings, and I feel like I can get away with more in B/W.

Here is a demonstration of ghosting. In both pics the GBPocket's contrast is darkened to make the ghosting more obvious, and I didn't color correct the photos.
On the left is vertical ghosting. The more dark pixels occupy a column, the stronger the ghosting, even columns of 1 pixel. On the right is horizontal ghosting, where dark pixels make individual rows lighter instead. Horizontal ghosting is almost unnoticeable but vertical ghosting is pretty severe.
Looking at these pics makes me realize that the choice of frame actually effects the shading of the picture. So in the future if I find that a picture is too light or too dark onscreen, I might change frames in addition to changing contrast.

Thanks. Somebody wrote on this board once that you shouldn't change brightness/contrast settings at all, which is far from true. Outdoor shots can easily be over/underexposed depending on the subject. Often the "auto exposure" will adjust to, say, the bright sky and leave everything else underexposed. The tunnel in pic related would be entirely black with standard settings due to the bright light at the end of it.
I adjust contrast/brightness for most of my shots to see what settings will get me the most detail on the objects I'm most interested in. Shots like >>5753287 are only possible with both lowered brightness and contrast, which can work wonders on overexposed outdoor shots.

I can see it working with abstract shapes like this lampshade or if you had some other clear, artistic vision in mind. It certainly has its uses, I just never happened upon them.

>Would you like me to take a picture of the LCD while turned off? Would that possible to add to your filter?
Sure, go ahead! The basic texture of the filter is a bit lackluster and I like the reflective grain of the original LCD. Not sure if I can replace it, but I'll try.

Another thing that might help with calibrating filters would be a set of 4 thick, horizontal bars, one in each shade (just use the paint dialogue), to get the shades and contrast right. Not sure how the contrast adjustment dial affects them, though. Also I wouldn't doctor the colours in this one.

This is a nice proof-of-concept but I know immediately it's not a genuine gbcamera photo simply because real photos don't fill the screen. For even better fakery you might consider adding a border.
