MnM games mostly take place in different worlds and the story line is barley connected. It is, but it doesn't really matter. The only games worth playing in order are 4 and 5 and only because of balancing issues if you try doing it in reverse with the same characters (just an educated guess, only ever finished light side before going to the dark, never in reverse).

6-8 is a good starting point if you don't want grid-based movement
3-5 is a good starting point if you want grid-based and turn-based movement

personally I would recommend to start with either 3 or 6

I've personally started with 7. It's surprisingly comfy. For a newcomer I would suggest 6-8 by a long shot. From what I understand it is a semi-reboot that takes place in a different "verse", so you won't lose context. 9 is bad, although some claim it can be salvaged with patches. I don't mind 10 myself, but it's quite obvious that Ubi REALLY didn't want to do that game.

Start with 3 or 4. Turbografx Super CDROM version of 3 is kino but PC ver can be as fast paced as you want so the choice is yours.
