Can we talk about this game? This was my first PC game and I had a lot of fun playing it as a kid. Is there any dumps of player made skins or modes? I feel like all the old websites are gone. I had a shit dialup connection back then so typically settled for setting up the wildest bot local games i could think of.

Play Quake Live, it's virtually the same thing but still has somewhat of a community

Great game, great maps.
A thing of it's day, sadly. People don't like to be faced with the challenge of getting better at a game anymore.
And my high end PC from 2007 is a toaster on current time's terms so I can't play Quake Champions.
I spent most of the time playing on The Longest Yard.

does that version have custom skins/models? i love quake 3 but what makes it a masterpiece
to me, is combining its gameplay with all the amateur and occasionally skillfully made skins. its honestly exciting.

Feel bad for you, bro.

Quake 3 was Quake in name only; Just a multiplayer game with no soul. Run around, shoot other people. Never understood the appeal of multiplayer, just a mosh pit with firearms.

ioquake3 is a nice source port that is compatible with vanilla Quake III, you only lose Punkbuster in the process. There are still alot of skins floating around the net, most of the mod websites are still there. As for playing, go take a look at >>5742235 if you want more players

i got to play hexen around that time so it isnt a complete loss, i understand your point though. it didnt feel like a complete "game" but as a kid i had a lot of fun setting up CTF games against the computer and them turning into hour long battles. it was fun in its own simple way. kind of like setting up cowboys and indians i guess or army men battles lol.

>>5742340
mind linking to a few sites? honestly looking for old q3a skins has brought me to a ton of shady looking websites, but i dont seem to have a choice in not clicking them because there are only so many things i can find on google.

You should ask the fps general

>> No.5742546

Funny you ask about skins, I just rediscovered a website that has a truckload of them. Someone found the link on their own in the FPS general a few days ago, and it reminded me of a year ago when the thread was finding neat shit on the site.

It seems like a ton of cool skins exist, but only a third come with a bot. Is there a fast and dirty way to copy and paste base game bot files into a new models directory? I've been trying to figure it out for two hours. Someone made a WORMS skin, and gave it a red and a blue bandanna, and somehow didnt ship it with a fucking bot file for team deathmatch.

i would fucking settle for a comprehensive guide on making my own bot failing that. i would prefer these models to just work but i dont mind learning for a month how to make them work.

>> No.5742912

>>5742831
You could probably do that. I'd say, look at the botfiles for other custom skins and see how they do it. I've never tinkered with the things, but I doubt It'd be that hard.

>> No.5743046

>>5742912
since i posted that, i found a tool call bot boom which is reasonably simple. im not quite sure how you do it, but it lets you assign a base game AI to a model/skin. So far its hit and miss because for base skins it works great. Trying to assign it to a variant skin isnt very consistant. (red blue etc)

>> No.5743068

>>5743046
i should add that i suspect it has to do with differences between how people make skins

I think you can use the addbot command to specify an alternate model and skin as extra arguments.

/addbot crash
adds a bot but what would the modifier for that be? i was hoping something simple like that existed but i havent found it. i do love that this game feels like a giant toybox though.

ive only played ut04 and it felt kind of like a great value version of quake 3 even if the graphics were better.

I'm afraid I don't know the syntax off by heart but at the very least I can tell you that a line like
>addbot grunt 3 red 500
should add the Grunt bot at skill level 3 (Hurt Me Plenty) on Red team after 500 milliseconds have passed. You could try adding further arguments after that and hope that the next arguments are custom bot name and skin. Maybe try something that looks like
>addbot Doom 5 free 100 'Darth Bloody Vader' vader/vader
May or may not work as desired, you'd have to experement, maybe swap the arguments around, add extra ones, etc.

Can't test it myself at the moment, I did a quick search and found this link about copying bot files and just changing the skins. If the addbot thing doesn't pan out you might give it a read, I only glanced at it.

You should play Quake 2 single player. It one of the best single players ever. It simplistic, but thr atmosFear is awesome.

op her i was too young for that shit back then unfortunately. When I was playing q3 as a kid i was in middle school. i feel like i missed out on a time that wont ever come back. we had some halo parties but that isnt really the same as a lan.

OP here. anyone ever use a program
named GTKradiant to make maps or skins? im having trouble setting it up and am not sure if its inherently unstable or if its incompatibility with windows 8.

lol

well as an update in case anyone has advice or wants to try fucking with maps, I made some progress. GTKradient is a real bitch to use, but on my window 8 machine, version 1.5 is the most stable. 1.6 has a nicer interface but crashes constantly and refused to make a .BSP file. Only .Map files. It took me a long time to learn how to simply navigate and swap maps texture,s but I'm having fun with it. Is there a way to run custom maps without having to go

/sv_pure 0
/devmap mapname

every time?
