I remember trying to play 3 in the pitch dark as a teenager and couldn't do it.

It's the scariest horror game I've ever played, but I don't have much experience with the genre outside of early Resident Evil. It's much scarier than the second game at least, and people dickride that game pretty hard (still a great game, though).

I've leave that to you. There remain only a few loose ends to tie up, and then the struggle in which we have been engaged for thousands of years against the filthy goyim finally will be victorious, and we will be able to devour everything they have created, as Yahweh, the god of our tribe, has commanded us!

I had to really work myself up to do 2, but one was always too much. I haven't attempted to play it in the last ten years though, so maybe I should go back and try.

I think a lot of the fear in these kinds of games comes entirely from our out of game perception, such as other people hyping it up to be scary or ourselves considering it to be scary without actually playing it. When you tell yourself it's not really a big deal, then you wind up breezing through everything without a care in the world.

>> No.5745579

>>5745025
Go play Outlast. Any game where you can effectively fight back can't possibly be scary.

>> No.5745741

silent hill games (well the first three and maybe the fourth to an extent) are just really good at making you feel uncomfortable
They just have a way of getting under my skin so I never feel "welcome" even during replays. As a kid I'd play RE games to relax and shoot some zombies, but SH never made me feel relaxed. It and games like it are the ultimate anti-comfy games (and that's a good thing)

I think the only scary enemy in the first game are the little kids, and that's only because they tend to be obfuscated by the camera when you enter a room and then suddenly they're all over you.

>> No.5746123

>>5744962
The only scary things are the controls.

>> No.5746128

Sound design is the most important aspect of a horror game and the psx's jump to cd made it so any great horror game will age well. Just turn off the lights and turn the sound up and Silent Hill 1 is as scary as any other game in the series.

>> No.5746140

>MUH SURBIBAL HORRUR memesters didn't play it because of it being considered a "RE clone" and with "shit graphics" at the time.
>Still talk shit of it to this day

>> No.5746157

Yeah it's pretty spooky still if you've never experienced it before. Hell for some people how crunchy the graphics look might even up the spook factor. I personally still think that the sewer areas in the first SH game are fucking oppressive.

Wrong. Depleting resources is what keeping you on edge. In Outlast, you are either running away or dead. No inbetween. There is no tension.

>> No.5746438

I would say the first 3 games were creepy. Not scary. Each game had its creepy area. One had the final area, two had the underground prison and three had that creepy bossfight with that thing in the mall (but I wouldn't call any area in the game itself creepy). Even four had that giant head towards the end of the game.

I thought two was the best though, all the weird erotic undertones and shieet.

>> No.5746458

None of the SH games are scary.
They have 10/10 atmosphere tho so give it a go.

I like it more for the chill, introspective soundtrack. You can feel the characters mourning loss, grieving and dealing with guilt and I think that's really beautiful.

it's a great game.
very unique experience, the sequels don't even do what it does really.
this game is in a weird place, i don't really think it can be remade and have the same effect because it really makes use of all of the things that would seem like a disadvantage in another game like the honestly ruddy graphics.
