Gonna be making the plunge and picking up a copy of Earthbound soon. Anyone have stories about authentic looking fakes or what to look out for in purchasing? Thanks in advance.

The game is so expensive that any seller will open the sell up and photograph the board.

Repro labels are too close to the orginals now and the top end clones use Nintendo boards and shells. Only way to tell is to open it.

there are plenty of pics of authentic labels and boards online so just check both carefully.

make sure that screws are shiny metal, not dull plastic
make sure that there isn't a "made in ___" under the model number
real copies will just say "nintendo", no "licensed by"
most copies are made in mexico, but there are a very limited number of "made in japan"s (but it always says ONLY on the back)
real copies will have the grey sticker on the back, or at least a nintendo indent near the bottom
the model number will also be relatively small
make sure that photos look legit, or it otherwise says "authentic" somewhere
if it doesn't say anywhere that it's a repro and the photo doesn't make it glaringly obvious, ebay has a money back guarantee
pic related is authentic for comparison, good luck
source: spent an entire summer looking for a cheap authentic one, settled on an untested one for $125 (luckily it saved and played fine, early nintendo carts are built like tanks)

also make sure that seller isn't located in china, hong kong, indonesia, taiwan or (probably, use your judgment on this one) australia
avoid "united states, united states" as location and generic stock photos

If you got an empty shell with no PCB in it you should definitely ask for your money back.
