I think he yells "Are they testing each others' strength?" in that situation sometimes.

I never understood the appeal of this game. They took the bad aspect of GB games of long as unskippable animations in battles, and make it worse in soulless slower 3D version. The only good thing about stadium games were the minigames.

>> No.5747141

>>5747131
Back in the day the 3D animation plus the announcer made for a pretty neat experience.

>> No.5747243

>soulless slower 3D version
But people are currently comparing Stadium's animations to the newer Pokemon 3D games and it's incredible how much SOUL the Stadium animations had.
I actually like Stadium's battles, animations can't be skipped but command input is pretty slick and quick, and I like that you can select without your opponent knowing what you chose (in case you're doing 2 player battles).
The best thing about Stadium is actually the facilitation at managing your GB game's mons and items.

>> No.5747251

>>5747131
The stadium games demonstrate the strategic design of pokemon. The main games are just level-up to win with dumb AI and nonthreatening movesets.

Probably letting you choose the moves of rental pokemon from a list of all moves each one can learn. Also held items, nature, IV/EV, shininess, ability, pokeball... And then let you save all that to your custom rental list.

>> No.5747583

>>5747547
>Probably letting you choose the moves of rental pokemon from a list of all moves each one can learn
Just use your own mons from the GB game at that point.
IIRC, Stadium 2 lets you save 1 item per pokemon.

>> No.5747591

>>5747583
Would be much better to edit the rentals since you don't have infinite TMs in the originals, and a lot of moves can only be gotten through breeding and that's too boring for most people. Letting you change the rentals as you please would allow some neat, unique stuff to happen that would be too troublesome otherwise.

Gamefreak are too lazy to put in all their Pokemon into Sword and Shield. You think they'd do THAT for a spinoff game like Stadium series?

>> No.5747804

>>5747723
Stadium was made by HAL, not Game Freak. No wonder it's so good.

>> No.5747813

>>5747131
It's inarguable. Even when I was a kid I was so disappointed in these games. I thought it was bullshit they couldn't do an actual Pokemon game on a console and instead gave us half-baked shit like this and Snap.

>> No.5747825

>>5747813
Here's the thing, playing Pokemon I think it works better as a handheld game. You play bits when you have free time or traveling somewhere. train a bit, catch some new one, advance on the story a bit. Then at home, Stadium works as a sort of hub for the game, you have better tools for using items, TMs, and organizing pokemon, and also the battle modes.
If they were to make the full Pokemon main game on the N64, the 3D models of the pokemon wouldn't be as polished as they are, as they would need more resource for all the other assets in the game. Stadium manages to make good economy of this by having only a handful of different background and stage assets, depending on the cup, and all the main work went to the Pokemon 3D models and their animations, which are still praised to this day and are better than modern pokemon 3D animations.
Snap is not meant to be an entry in the main series. It's a neat spinoff that plays like a rail shooter, very unique and fun regardless of it being tied to the Pokemon franchise.

It's just people being oldfags about change. The games never had great animations to begin with they were very very basic.

can we talk about this shit for a second? some of these designs suck and are unnecessary (all the babies that didn't make it), but some of them absolutely boggle the mind as to why they were cut. that lil panda puppet thing is awesome. whut were dey thinking

>> No.5753184

ITS PARALYZED ON THE SPOT

>> No.5753586

>>5753131
Presumably, the original idea behind the move Curse is that only the "puppet" (voodoo doll) would learn it at level 100, but it would try to evolve into the jiang-shi panda every time it leveled up. Then they probably realized that having a Pokemon's primary gimmick only work if you leveled it up to 100 was stupid, so they made Curse have two effects: One that hurts the Pokemon to damage the opponent and one that slows the Pokemon down and makes them stronger. The voodoo doll had the former, while its evolution would have the later. Then the evolution line got cut, so they just retooled the move to vary based on ghost or non-ghost (or perhaps this was implemented earlier and the evolution was changed into a non-ghost type at some point).

Nowadays, I mostly see it as an extensive postgame for Gens 1 and 2. You know, something to do with a high level team for people who aren't into the competitive scene. The animations are also pretty well done, so even now, it's neat to see my Pokemon in 3D in a way that doesn't suck.
