NiGHTS is excellent because skilled play of it still looks cool. There's no goofy glitches or exploits that ruin the core gameplay, with the minor exception of grinding along the floor/ceiling during acrobatic time.

You're playing against the clock. That's kind of the point. Even just playing the game casually it's great. Not sure why everything has to take 100+ hours minimum on easy mode.

this
You're penalized (well not really) for low scores, and rewarded(again, not really) for higher scores. You play on the same 5 or so stages, and that's about it. There isn't much causality and learning where to do the best twirly whirlies and ribbon spins ends up feeling like a chore.

No, really it's Sonic turned into a flying game, and it didn't really "take off" in NA

I guess. The game doesn't convey the whole "do laps and rack up a big score" bit well at all though.
Like, avoiding the end of the section is just a really weird decision, and the game chokepoints where the player can go around the level start/end area, encouraging newer players to just zoom through it and then they never really figure out why they're getting C-ranks.

>>5740073
>Not sure why everything has to take 100+ hours minimum on easy mode.
Even for a short, score focused game, it's still really short. I'm pretty sure Sonic 2 is longer.
When I was done with NiGHTS, my one thought was that each side of the story needed at least one extra stage apiece.

Seriously though, all of Sonic Team's /vr/ games except for like S3&K have the problem of being uncomfortably short (and many of their later ones have the problem too).
Burning Rangers is ludicrously short.

>>5740005
it's kinda like a side-view time-trial racing game when played for better scores
do a bunch of laps, make a big chain, don't fuck up
it's pretty satisfying

>> No.5740518

>>5740509
NiGHTS and Burning Rangers is going to take you at least a few hours without a guide. Do you really think those games would work if they were longer? They are fast burn and extremely fun games with some of the best music out there.

>> No.5740541

>>5740518
most of the extra time spent in my first play from start to finish in NiGHTS was just dealing with the bosses
Still, I can accept that NiGHTS is a fast burn, being a largely score attack game, but it's just a little too short.
I can't accept that for Burning Rangers. As cool as it is, it really, really feels like "wait, that's it?" when it's over. It has score and ranking, but it really doesn't feel like that's as major of a focus like say, NiGHTS or SA2.

on an unrelated note, NiGHTS and BR are absurdly pretty Saturn games
both have really terrible polygon breakup, but they've got so much better lighting (seriously, Sonic Team used smooth shading a hell of a lot more than other Saturn developers) and the framerate is decent and they really make the Saturn look like something that could actually compete with the PS1 in visuals

this game is brainlet material. it's too short for non-brainlets. if there ever was a Nights 2 (wasn't there a NDS title though?) I would expand it like crazy content-wise.

>> No.5741337

>>5740649
just because they never defined "its" gender?
it doesn't bug me so much tbqh. Nights is pretty much the only vg character that I know that has that particular quality. it's a dream-like being with dream-like and hazy features. it sorta compliments this figure because dreams, night and the moon are all about confusion, unreal states of mind and atmospheres.

>> No.5741338

A score-based game can't be too short or too long. It's up to you.
Nights sequel was on Wii. I thought it was OK.
More story-based, and more gimmick type levels experimenting with the controls. Normal Nights levels are neat and look great.

Also first the nature of the Sega Saturn as feeling like a weird console that you're never sure if it ever existed back then or not. Not saying this as a joke because Saturn sold poorly in the west, I mean it. I had the Saturn back then, but it has always felt like this weird system that you'd only find in a dream. The good kind of weird.

I have a special place for Burning Rangers in my heart but it really is an unbelievable technical mess. If anything it makes the Saturn look far weaker than the PS1 seeing as how it ran like 10-20 fps lower than comparable PS1 games.

you're allowed to feel this way about a fictional character but Nights is basically just a fantastic jester/harlequin figure with human features who is all about entertainment and play and who is inviting you to join and explore his dream world. yes, things can be that simple and used to be that simple back then and there is no hidden agenda with that character. He has no species because he is a probably not even real but a fantasy in itself and a mystery although he looks human.

He's not Cicero from Skyrim or Kefka Palazzo from FF6 or the Jester from Darkest Dungeon either so there I don't think there is anything truly unsettling or dark about this figure.

The stages randomize after being the game and saving everybody takes hours and hours of playing through what are new stages every time with new areas that open up and close off depending on which version of the stage you get. It's somewhat short to beat, maybe two or three hours (assuming you're playing for the first time and need to learn the stages / die a few times) - which isn't that short compared to most games, but there's a ton of gameplay even after beating it. I always felt the Burning Rangers is short complaint was unfair. The last stage alone takes a bit of time to beat.
