So a little while back I finally garnered interest in the Tomb Raider franchise and ordered a copy of the first PS1 game. I've already prep'd myself for what I'm getting into, I'm more curious on your thoughts on the franchise's legacy. Which is your favorite? How did you get into the series? Do you still like them today?

Just play them on PC as anon said above, you can set high resolution and play addons.
>Which is your favorite?
While I think that tr4 is the best, I had most fun with AoD, it would have been best if they had more time and experience with ps2 engine development.
>How did you get into the series?
That's funny, but in 2013 with all this hype around the reboot, there were debates about
how they ruined Lara and TR and I looked into it more closely.
I played legend demo on release, but for some reason didn't get excited, now I like it more.

Playstation is the superior version of TR1, the PC version lacked misic and shiny reflective gold Lara and crystals.

1 isn't worth playing beyond the content of the base game. The expansions and fan levels for the sequels are okay.

I kinda love CORE TR games. I even own the Angeline Jolie movies on DVD and bought the TR Archives comicbook collection. That's the kind of autism I have for this series.
As a teenager, I kinda loved them in this "guilty pleasure" kind of way. Now, I really grew to aprecciate the design behind this series - especially after new installments like LAU and 2013 came about. My very first one was TR3 - and I still have a very soft spot for it. I guess aside from TR5 - that can fuck off and die - there isn't an installment that I actively dislike. I even appreciate AoD. Of them all, I think I like TR2 the least, because it takes FOREVER to get to the point.
I guess TR1 is still superior in terms of level design and overall atmosphere, TR4 has the best story, hands down and TR3 is just a fun romp - it feels a bit like a TV series, with every new location (London, India, Nevada, Pacific, Antarctica) being a different story arc. It's probably the most pure "Tomb Raider" of them all.
So there is that - thanks for reading my blog.

Played the first game recently and really enjoyed it even though I never had particularly high hopes for it. If someone had told me it's basically 3D Prince of Persia I would have been interested sooner.

Ignore people bitching about which version you should play. I played the PC version (modded to look and sound as much like the PS1 version as possible...) and realizing later that the PS1 version has a limited save system, I wish I had played that one instead. Being able to save anywhere can trivialize platforming, limited saving is always better design.

Tomb Raider 1 is still one of my favorite PS1 games, but I think the series takes a serious nose-dive with 2 focusing too much in action, not enough on puzzles and too many shitty non-tomb environments. Then 3 was a little better but still not as good and that was the last retro era one I played to completion.

Underworld is the only other game in the series I think is really good, bit it's short.

Bizarre thread, this is an extremely famous series that has had hundreds of threads talking about its most minor details. Asking"do you like it" is the equivalent of asking "do you guys like megaman / do you guys like castlevania." This is entry level shit. Not everybody here is going to like every game but the fame and popularity of the games peaks for itself, so you are aware that millions of people do like it so play it if you are curious.

My dad was into computers and constantly bought/pirated games and one day he got TR2 with a magazine. I would spend hours on Lara's manor trying to do the track course and the maze, but I could never make it. I remember he played the shit out of 3, though.

The funny thing about the old TRs is that at the time I don't think anyone question just how artificial and contrived the level design was.

>Be an oilrig worker
>Want to go to the loo
>Have to push a block to reveal another one to pull, behind which is a lever that you have to activate to open a time-limited door that you access by jumping over a pit of death

>Work in the Nevada compound

And so on and so forth, it was just completely absurd but at the time we thought nothing of it. Still fun to play.

I made a thread on /v/ a few days ago, the context is despite the series being so famous, I've gotten the impression it's been more well regarded for the character of Lara than the games holding up because the people who experienced the games have very mixed opinions as to where the series started to falter or when they started to get good. Not to mention, for the longest time this series always looked bland and cookie cutter action adventure, but someone spoke to me about the first game and how exploration heavy it is with Prince of Persia gameplay design philosophies, but in 3D, which sounded interesting to me, as well as the level design since I always presumed the series to be more gunplay focused. I'm also always curious of peoples opinions on games before I play them, I have a tendency to do that a lot just to get larger amounts of feedback of what people took away from video games, might be weird for me to do, sorry I guess.

Just play the damned thing. Lara was peculiarly popular with normies (I guess just because big tiddie girl), but the first game is a great platforming/exploration game in its own right with fantastic atmosphere and interesting puzzles. Prince of Persia is a good analogue, but there's quite literally another dimension to Tomb Raider. The weakest part of the game is the combat which is perfunctory but not too much of a drag. Later games make combat much more of a focus which is why myself and many others like them less, as there's little skill involved other than jumping about like an idiot while holding the fire button and the increase of bullet sponge human enemies both makes combat more tedious and damages the lonely atmosphere (the first game essentially only uses combat with humans as boss battles).

>> No.5731518

>>5731346
Playing through it and the exploration is satisfying, but god damn I can barely find more 1 secret in each level, The quietness of the game is pretty eerie followed by the faint ambiance popping up from time to time, not to mention audio cues during some combat sequences, I'll admit some of the enemies have made me jump a few times already because I don't see them coming. Combat is meh, but at the very least it isn't infuriating to engage in, but yeah jumping around like a dumbass and holding the action button doesn't take much skill. My only real issues right now is that I wish Lara was a tad bit faster on land. Swimming controls surprisingly well for the time, I'm quite shocked. Looking forward to playing more.

Could faggots stop recommending this option to new players? GoG version is broken as shit, and the version made by that polish company that everyone recommends requires a good deal of tweeking and modification to make it run the way it's supposed to on Win7 or Win10. Even then you'll still need to fuck around with config to make it not control like ass. And this may come as a shock and surprise to the cocksuckers who keep recommending the PC version, but most people don't want to spend 30-60 minutes just configuring and tweeking a game just to play.
>b-b-but 3dfx glide!
There's a term for those who value graphics above all else. They are called faggots.
>b-b-but the expansions
Doesn't mean a fucking thing to someone who will most likely get bored of fucking around with the program before they even get a chance to play the base game.

If you wanna play a TR game, play the PSX version. If you really want the best possible graphics after playing, then by all means go hunt down the PC version by Cengage or whatever their name is and take the time to get it playable. Recommending that shit to new players is just faggotry.

She works fine as just a simple sexy rich explorer lady that gives the player an excuse to go rooting around old tombs looking for treasure and solving puzzles, which is the point of the game in the first place.

Too much character bs is one of the reasons the reboot series has been such digshit. But there are more people like you than me out there so that's the state of gaming.

I’m convinced a fan could make a better Tomb Raider game than any of the big developers out here now.
