Dragon Warrior 1 is an NES classic. It was actually remade specifically for the western market to have upgraded graphics and controls to that of the Japanese version of Dragon Quest III. I would easily put it up there with all the other NES classics like Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, etc.

Dragon Warrior II is....well it set the standards for pretty much every DQ game to follow. Party system, group based battle system, NPCs who die, huge world to explore, complex story, etc. However, it was a little too grand for its own good. NPCs didn't explain what you needed to do next and wouldn't repeat needed information a second time. And some items were downright hidden. The biggest problem however was the difficulty spikes. Whenever you got a new team mate, you literally had to stop and grind up a good 5-10 levels just to be able to proceed, or else one hit and they would die. And pretty much the whole game, Prince Cannock was useless. And in the last area, those Batboons....one hit instant kill spells. Suffice to say, Dragon Warrior 2 is possibly the hardest game in the whole series.

Dragon Warrior 3 was a massive improvement in nearly all ways. And completed a trilogy of games. Its only shortcoming may be having to find orbs at a certain part of the game. It certainly had the best class based system for an NES RPG. Yes, even better than FF1 and Famicom FF3.

Dragon Quest IV is my personal favorite DQ game and feels like the most unique RPG on the NES. A chapter based system was really fresh for the time and the characters themselves were all unique. Especially Chapter 2 and 3. Who would think doing menial tasks like trading goods would be so addicting? Then they all come together to form a team...its just great.

Of course, all these games are even better with their respective remakes.

On the flip side, I honestly have only played the 'remakes' of the FF games. Not the NES versions. But even the remakes, if you can call them remakes, I did not find as fun (or even well designed) as the DQ games. I often came up against areas that were just plain badly designed.

In FF2, I often came to areas where enemies outside a dungeon on in a town would be stronger than enemies inside a dungeon. And of course the actual leveling mechanic itself was completely broken. More often than not, I found myself getting in trouble because a random boss or enemy would attack me for story reasons, not because I was caught unaware. A common complaint I have with the entire FF series.

In FF3, the game is suppose to be focused on classes. Yet every time you get a new crystal, you have to start all the way back at level 1 agaqin. This leads to you having to basically sit in one area and grind back up OR only switch one characters class at a time and hope they don't get hit. The worst thing with FF3 however is, you get the last Crystal RIGHT OUTSIDE the final dungeon. This means you have NO choice but sitting outside with all your characters and grinding your classes up. And the EXP rates are atrocious. How can DQ games be accused of having grinding when FF3 has it 10x worse than even DQ2..... I wonder how it was on the Famicom.

You can easily miss shards WITH a walkthrough. I used the official strategy guide book that came out with the original PSX game. And I missed many shards. But granted, it was one of the worst written strategy guides I've ever used.

Supposedly the 3DS remake is gonna have a shard searching device. Which it really needs.

The Mother fans (and I assume you yourself) bring it upon yourself. Like PC elitists and many other people, you act like you are an oppressed group while at the same time claiming your series is superior to all other series.

You can't insult everyone you see and then cry that everyone else is picking on you when they dare to do the same back at you. And this has been going on a lot farther back than 2011.

>> No.581532

I love both series, but they really do have opposite design philosophies.

Dragon Quest sticks to a tried and true formula and tries not to stray too far from it, the characters and their motivations are always simplistic and rely on the player to superimpose their interpretation onto them.

Final Fantasy always tries to be cutting edge, innovative, and offer a new experience, with more robust characters and stories that weave an interesting narrative.

>I've seen more people calling earthbound a game for weeaboos than I do DQ

That picture is more picking on the mother fans specifically. Its not true for all of them, but some Mother fans just act entitled and go into other threads constantly saying 'Mother is superior to all other series'. And its especially funny when they do it to Dragon Quest considering how much Mother directly took from Dragon Quest. Even the series creator himself said he directly took inspiration from Dragon Quest.

>actually the DQ/DW games feels more western to me than any other JRPG

I completely agree with you. I often wonder why more people in the west are always lumping it together with FF and such. When it takes its roots fro mthe same CRPGs as WRPGs do. In fact, I'd say Dragon Quest has remained more like the older style CRPGs than most WRPGs of today.

The problem is, people associate 'tride and true' with 'never changing' and 'boring'. But Dragon Quest actually changes quite a lot. People just don't notice because the art style remains consistent and the series keeps a lot of the same content over multiple games.

And then they associate 'cutting edge, innovative and robust characters and narratives' as being 'always unique' and 'better'. Problem is, many times the 'innovations' in Final Fantasy are nothing new, just something from a previous game or something barowed from another source just with a new coat of paint. Heck, Final Fantasy has even taken things from Dragon Quest on more than one occasion.

I was giving you reasons to why I didn't find it fun and just an average game. It didn't stray too much from the genres foundations. Standard experience points and levels, only characters with PSI powers will gain skills and that is at land mark levels which is just standard development.

The customization is just equipping items and that is it, otherwise due to the strict experience points and level growth in which it automatically inserts your attributes for your character there was zero tinkering with them, or even your party since you didn't have a choice which is a shame since it is one of the things that is fun about RPG's.

Progress is fairly standard, it is a big line through most of the game then right at the end it slightly branches out for about four areas you need to go to, but that is about it.

The battle system isn't much to be noted on, most of it is just standard conserve MP (or in this case PP) and unload on bosses. The rolling HP system really didn't come into real effect until mid to mid late game. The exploding trees really didn't experiment with this mechanic too much since they usually came at you one at a time thus there wasn't anything to fret for when they hit hard.

I mean I liked the battle music and battle backgrounds, but such things couldn't get me to praise it at all since I could play many other RPG's that have something unique about them when it came to game mechanics.

Wow, the remake of 3 sounds shit. You should play the original, from the sounds of it what you played is a completely different game. That does not happen in the real FF3. In fact you should play the originals of them all.
