Are there any contemporary accounts of developers giving their thoughts on Donkey Kong County at the time of release? I want to know how they felt about seeing something of such staunch quality overshadowing everything that they had worked on and what that must've collectively felt like to look so unworthy in comparison. No, seriously, I really want to know.

>> No.5730224

Not really, people liked it, devs included.
But if you want some history rewritting, you can read that one american journo who made up shit about Miyamoto saying he didn't like dkc, lol. If you're fine with fanfiction.

The evidence is sporadic at best. Regardless, Yoshi's Island failed at besting DKC anyway.

If we assume it's true for the purpose of discussion, I think it's funny that Donkey Kong was so far ahead of the competition that it made a difference. I'm not seeing a Nintendo answer to Sonic the Hedgehog, because Miyamoto probably doesn't care about Sonic (not that he should).

Also I replayed some of DKC and then DKC 3 recently, and it really looked like they tightened up those graphics. Like they learned some better rendering techniques between games and palettized the sprites better. The mode 7 water looked really good too.

The biggest reason I know it's bullshit is because Japs are extremely reserved with their true opinions (see: honne/tatamae). If he said anything critical at all, it'd be some weird Japanese non-answer like, "It's understandable that the east and west had differing design philosophies at the time."

It's not funny at all and if you were alive in '94 you'd remember that 90% of kids were still playing on the SNES and Genesis. Even in 1996 sales were still strong for SNES and Genesis games.

It's not even an 'old' phenomenon—Wii games were still being released until just a couple years ago. Nintendo exists in their own world where console generations don't really apply.

>why are there only like 4 games that look like this when its such an amazing style?

like half of Square RPGs on PS1 used pre-rendered backgrounds

many other developers tried to mimic the DKC style, but it looked goddawful most of the time. DKC worked fairly well because of the cartoon styled low-resolution sprites (hiding the limitations of the 3D models, like the body joints) and also because RARE used more natural-looking backgrounds instead of plastic-looking ones

Why pretend that Donkey Kong Country doesn't have God-tier gameplay that utterly humiliates everything from the same era? Isn't that somewhat of a glaring plothole in that theory? Having the best graphics and music in any game is a positive, but I don't think it detracts from the fact that DKC was whole generations ahead of the industry at implementing level design and mechanics as well. Personally, I disagree with the anti-Nintendo rumor. I think they knew full well that DKC was a masterpiece above all.
