Why the fuck do people do this? Nobody in their right mind is throwing away potentially hundreds of dollars worth of retro games.

I think part of it is the legacy of the enviable time when retro video game stuff COULD be found in the trash but I have a friend who's been a garbage man since he was like 20 back in the early 2000s. It's a very lucrative line of work BTW, even not counting the valuable stuff you find but he only found the occasional console with a hand full of games even back then and that's a literal garbage man who's job it is to see everyone's garbage

>> No.5716753

>>5716693
I've been following some people on Instagram for the past 6 years and some of the more serious collectors go to swapmeets and garage sales constantly and find a handful of good items.

One guy I follow is a garbage man in New Jersey and at least once a month he posts a photo of a trash bag filled with games. Mostly it's casual filler stuff like Sports games or just boxes for N64 games but even those are crazy to just throw away. He's posted photos of a rough but complete boxed NES console and one was a grocery bag filled with water damaged SNES games, the only 'L@@k RARE" one being SMRPG with a scraped label.

tl;dr it does happen but not to the extent people make it seem like it happens. But it DOES happen and you don't need to be skeptical of everything but yeah you aren't finding a sealed copy of Harvest moon at goodwill.

This.

I have purchased my fair share of cheap stuff from the goodwill but no one is just throwing this shit out.

Normies instinctively get that, "This is old so of course its worth outrageous amounts of money on ebay".

Thats why flea malls and retro shops have copies of pokemon and atari 2600s that are eternally entombed on a shelf in a store.

They dont want to admit that they just spent 300$ on a game boy game while at the same time crying about their student loan dept that needs to be forgiven.

parasites, that's why.

the not so short version of the story.

hipsters and E-posers, cokraches who got attracted by the retro gaming community, and like SJWs (sorry for the analogy), they infiltrated it, revisioned their own rules, took over, and now they completly destroyed the retro game sphere.

look at these parasites, they know what they are doing, and they had no issue shoving it in our faces.

I find hidden gems™ all the goddamn time at non goodwill thrift stores.

I have a 3 day weekend every few months so me and the wife will hit up all the thrift stores, flea markets and antique shops within 30 minutes of our house. We find some gold on occasion like games, systems, legos, fun merch, ect for very cheap. I'm a bit of a handyman so I will come across clearly broken consoles for free (or for a few bucks) and fully refurbish them. We never spend any more than $5 a game and I have found some seriously valuable things. I'm not a re-seller though so I will either keep it or trade it to a friend with similar hobbies. In the last 5 years I have found:
>pristine Secret of mana for $5
>CIB Final fantasy 2
>CIB earthworm jim for PC
>CIB NES Kirby
>a few Megaman carts for under $5
>assorted vintage game promo shirts

I had this upper middle class neighbor that was spoiled to all hell. We were good friends for a long time but fuck man, could he be obnoxious when he showed off his parents money. He would get 4 Christmas worth of presents every year and owned huge collections for almost every NTSC system with everything from peripherals, strategy guides, accessories, ect. He had everything worth playing and a full blown battlestation at 13 years old.

He was super protective of his shit too and we all respected his property as best we could but he was still strictly against any kind of borrowing. I remember being super jealous one day when I came over he had all of his games laid out on the floor to count them and the number was around 350 when I only had around 25 games total. I remember asking him to call me if he ever sold any of them.

Ran into him a few years ago and the fucker got married and divorced to the first piece of ass that came his way and now he's totally different. Bankruptcy changes a man. I asked him about his collection and he just kind of shrugged and said he sold it all at a yard sale for almost nothing like 10 years ago. I was told by another friend my face turned bright red when he told me this.

There's always tons of people who clearly go there and stand there most of the day filling up their carts with stuff to flip online. This is totally generational.
When dear old mom and dad decide to have a yard sale and your old shit is in the boxes, you're probably 24-28. You left home, or discarded those toys and your parents are putting it out there.
SNES games (for instance) at yard sales started teetering out of random finds around 2008. Those kids are now in their 30's. Mom and dad, if they aren't dead already did whatever they were going to do with those games, and some collector or reseller has already bought them.
There are far less parents and grandparents out there with old games in their closets to even discover. With every passing day, the likelihood drops like a stone. The likelihood that they would not only find them, but throw them in the garbage is almost nil.
There are special cases where something like a shut-in has died, and 90% of the contents of his home were tossed out by whatever contractors were hired to clean it. In those cases, I'd wager most of the games found are either resold by whoever finds them, or given to the next-of-kin. A small amount probably gets thrown out with the rest of the garbage unnoticed.

It just isn't plausible.

I'm sure he was just too busy trolling you with bullshit like that to show those "entire shipping pallets of hardware so rare it never shows up on ebay or has even a footnote on wikipedia". Sure, it's an interesting pile of garbage and I'm sure there's some Hidden Gems™ in there. But you shouldn't believe everything you hear on the internet. Especially from someone who blatantly flaunts his ignorance.

Ehhhh not really. I was pausing the video to google some of the computer models he was naming and several of them go for hundreds. An unopened still sealed in plastic models could probably go for thousands. The keyboards alone go from 50-200 dollars depending on how used they are. I'm sure tons of stuff in that hot warehouse is broken, but its still a literal treasure trove if you had a small team of people sorting it and selling it all online in an orderly fashion.

I saw that too. Fuckin mind blowing. I'm lucky to see a beat-up, soiled Commodore or Tandy maybe once every few years at thrift stores. Most of the time this stuff is gone before it even hits the shelves. Sellers on Ebay and the like want too much for the stuff. I hate this shit.

I just gave away bin after bin of video game stuff recently, for nothing. It's taking up space.

I sold off a bunch of my retro stuff in 2015. Sold it real cheap. I posted it on Kijiji (Canuck Craigs List) and got 20+ replies within 10 minutes. Didn't want to part with it, but needed the money.

Yeahhh really. If you were able to google shit and find prices then they can't possibly be "hardware so rare it never shows up on ebay or has even a footnote on wikipedia" now, can they?
Like I said, I'm sure there's some Hidden Gems™ in there. The place has been picked over many times so how many and how "gemmy" are big questions. There's a very limited number of people who are interested in a NIB Gateway 386SX or whatever shit is "unopened still sealed in plastic". I'm sure you could unload the more valuable stuff one at a time on eBay. I saw a few things that are old enough and uncommon enough they might be of interest to collectors. But I just skimmed through the video so I missed the part where they said the stuff was being given away for free or sold by the pound or whatever would make that a viable option. As long as the guy doesn't open one of those shrink wrapped AOL CDs and get on the internet to price check you're plan sounds brilliant.

Parents and grandparents sometimes do I guess.
I only "collect" physical copies of my favourite PC and DOS games, but I would be glad to find random retro games in the trash, I am sure I could sell them on ebay for a relatively high price.

Exactly. Most of the time these old kooks don't even know who they are anymore half the time.

It’s not hard to find good games at thrift stores
In just one BookOff trip I walked away with CIB copies of fire emblem, mother, mother 2, in dragon Quest 2, final Fantasy II, final Fantasy III, street fighter II, pilotwings, excitebike, thrift shops are the BEST place to get CIB games not retro game shops especially in akihabara they just exist to rip off dumb white people
