Options for non-EOPs:
Mother 1 original on Famicom
Mother 2 original on Super Famicom
Mother 3 on a GB Micro for maximum pixel density
If you need translations:
Just emulate on your PC; preferably on a CRT monitor (better if TV through composite). The original prototype english translation is fine, but if you want the more "passionate" translation by tomato you can probably find some patch around. Don't use that easy ring bullshit, the game doesn't require it.
For M3 just go with tomato translation, the only one.

I always prefer the original translation of a game, unless it was nonsensical garbage in the first place (Like Breath of Fire 2 ).
Whenever a retranslation pops up, it ends up either feeling too dry/literal or ends up taking too many liberties and fucks it up.
