It's long and full of strong enemies, which is fair and appropriate. The bullshit stems from several enemies, including the boss, spamming insta-death attacks. At this point you have no means of protecting yourself from them, other than weak natural magic defense and dumb luck.

I had almost the opposite experience. Me and my step brother rented it one weekend, similarly got to Down the Tubes and hit a wall. But it only spurred us on more and we stayed up stupidly late just passing the controller back and forth until we started getting the hang of it.

A tital blast, I returned it the next day and bought my own copy that very week.
