I was 9 when I played Quake 1, which I got from a warez CD my father brought home. It was called something like "Best action games '97" or something, with one of Boris Valejo semi-naked fantasy babes on the cover.
I remember little of my first time playing it, but I do remember that I was swimming through a narrow underwater tunnel, which was a terrible experience since as a kid I was afraid of drowning (a result of my Granddad trying to teach me to swim via oldschol methods of throwing me off a boat). I resurfaced in a small room with a grunt, and I remember getting really terrified by that point, especially by his square head.
I turned the game off and, and spent few hours away from PC.
When I get back to it, I went back to playing Doom, Heretic and Duke (Doom and Heretic I had vbefore, Duke came on same warez CD)
I haven't played Quake 1again until 3 years later, and then I couldn't remember that same spot that scared me so much before.
Apparently that CD also had some shovelware-tier maps bundled with it, and I may have launched one of them via bat file or something.
That Quake 1 version also had a really weird sound mod that switched "HUH" for "HEE" and landing sound for "OOYA" or something like that, and swapped some other sounds. I didn't know it was modded at the time and assumed the game was weird like that.

It literally doesn't matter, especially with modern compilers, engines and computers. None of the brushes you place exist in the compiled map. qbsp splits some of them into multiple polygons, combines others, and outright discards any faces outside the play area.

No, that's the wrong place.
That underwater tunnel was very long, narrow and straight, covered in some sort of medium-bright greenish texture (I think it was bricks, but im not sure) with a small window to surface from, and was leading into a small very basic square room with a single grunt in it, and maybe some shells.

I played Quake a lot over the years and I'm 100% sure that place isn't anywhere in the original levels. Which lead me to a conclusion that I accidentally launched one of those early usermaps the warez version of Quake came packaged with.

Also It wasn't Vallejo, but Luis Royo image onn the cover of that warez CD . I'm 95% sure it was picrelated, but maybe it was some other of his babes with same pallet and style (which is like more than half of his work, but this looks closest to what I remember that I could find on basic google).
CD itself is lost to time obviously.
Other contents of the CD were: Final Doom, Duke, Witchaven 1 and 2, Heretic, Hexen, and some really stupid paintball game. There may also have been Blood in there since I remember playing it back then, but don't remember where I got it.

There definitely were some shovelware-tier levels for Duke and Quake.

Advice for anyone about to play/replay Sigil - enable brightmaps and lights in GZDoom. I've just finished my second playthrough in GZDoom (first one was in PRBoom+) and it was greatly enhanced by the lighting. Okay then. Perhaps this is the reason for at least some cases, the enforcers and shotgunners you encounter in the Quake 1 and the Scourge of Armagon expansion are hostile to Ranger; some of the levels in Episodes 2, 3, and the first of EP4 take place not in another part of the universe, but rather he's traveled to another time, probably into the past where he either hadn't become a Marine yet or just recently got recruited, and thus the enforcers and other human personnel in levels like the beginning of EP4 see you as an intruder. Though of course some have been influenced by Shub.

Okay, I have an issue. I am implementing a rocket jump opportunity for sequence breaking. Now I am unsure as how to design that spot. The basic idea is to have a drop at the beginning that you can rocket jump up to skip a later part of the level. The two possibilities I have devised are:

A) A section of the railing is missing. You immediately understand you have to drop down there, but you also might remember this and try a rocket jump back up.

OR

B) There are doors that obviously lead to a staircase or something so you know they are connected. As the upper door won't open properly you can only jump over the railing, but might remember that spot and try a rocket jump back up.

I am really not sure which one is better. Also note that this is just a quick mockup and of course it will look better in the finished map.

I have this body of ideas that I want to put into a project but I need some help organizing them. I know ideas are worth jack shit so I'll just dump some here in the hopes that someone picks them up or help me shape it into a feasible project.

The first idea is a Wolfenstein 3D-like mod set in Feudal Japan, more specifically in Kyoto, where the city has been overtaken by yokai (weeaboo demons just like my Japanese animays) coming straight from HELL. The idea is to have period weapons and survival-like mechanics, like avoiding conflict and narrow corridors.

The other idea is "Doom Guy meets Time Squad", where Doomguy visits all the wonders of the ancient world in their glory demon days. The idea is not to have so much combat but focus on platforming and stage hazards. I'd also like the stages to be huge single-maps with puzzles that unlock the boss room.

And... That's about it for now. I don't know how solid of ideas these are but I'm wishing to pick one and go with it.

I do prefer the classic take on the Plasma, where it's a high tier weapon true and proper.
You can carry lots of shots, each hit is pretty decent in damage, and combined with the high rate of fire the damage output is excellent.
Shame it's so overshadowed by the BFG, I feel like people will prioritize the ammo for it and abandon the plasma.

Why people think of linear gameplay as something bad? While idtech 1 supports the unlinear style of mapping, the true canonic style adventures like Sigil or NRFTL end up being mostly linear adventures with a proper flow and progression, while user wads always end being just chores in some randomly generated maze style mapping.

This is the single biggest flaw with usermade wads. They are just circling around, and you rarely move forward from A to B (or just very slowly or unsatisfyingly). Sometimes the key you get is just an excuse for more backtracking, and buttons rarely show the way out. Also different levels tend to look like samey, which also removes a lot from the progression feel. Usermade wads end up losing their welcome midway through is the end result of this.

Levels should be tight, shouldn't overstay their welcome, and unlinearity should be just used smartly, likes crossing a previous area from a different angle for example, or seeing it from a window or a 3D style hight elevation.

Well now.

I just made it through Episodes 1, 2, 3 of the Ultimate Doom with Hideous Destructor.

I have to say, the ending was a bit anticlimatic, because the spider mastermind went down to three brontornis shots and that was that. Didn't even get to use the BFG or the fuckton of stuff I was hoarding. Felt like I saved all the good stuff for the end and then I didn't even get to use it. But I guess that's on me. And also because I just finished the equivalent of Babby's Hideous Bootcamp.

Do you really find the extra stim that useful, or is that just because there was nothing else that would fit within the weight restriction?

I ask because I've found stims and medpacks to be way way way way abundant in HD. Like, I've never found myself in a situation (that I can remember) where I was like "Damn, I wish I had an extra medkit/stim right now" since they're everywhere. I usually only carry one medkit, open it when I'm injured, use up the extra goodies like bloodbag/stim, and then just dump the used kit in favor of a new one.

But maybe that's because I've been playing the babby wads?

Also, are stims better used to slow down bleeding, or do you also liberally use them to perform better in combat while injured?

Stims are really good. Pop one before starting combat, then you'll be alive to patch yourself up afterwards. When you get those unlucky hits that ignore armor and fuck you up with a ton of wounds, use the stim first so you don't go into incap before you finish stapling. It's also best to use a stim right before using a berserk pack, it greatly improves your chances of survival during comedown. There's no downside to stimpacks besides the possibility of overdosing, so use them liberally.

It's gotten into the heads of a lot of people that because the BFG is better on paper, it's always the better choice. But then those people double-fuck themselves because they only pull out the BFG to toast bosses or really large groups and never use their cell ammo for anything that wouldn't take full advantage of the spray. Any situation where you wouldn't want the BFG, the plasma rifle is almost certainly your best choice.

Yes, but as you've said so yourself that the player isn't going to be crunching the numbers as to why the plasma rifle is better in certain situations. Players will unfortunately consider the plasma rifle a leech gun in the same way the pistol and to some extent the shotgun is. The BFG is a powerful weapon that can kill a cyberdemon in 2-4 hits if I remember correctly, and when a player sees this they will most likely avoid using it and the plasma rifle in an attempt to hoard precious plasma ammo for such occasions. Simply separating the BFG from the ammo pool is just an easy way to make the other weapons more useful, even the pistol should you do the same for the chaingun.

I'll admit though that the biggest problem is the SSG, however, I also believe some ammo changes could fix that as well.

I disagree honestly. The BFG is a completely different tool from the plasma rifle and I think a lot of players completely sleep on just how GOOD the plasma actually is because they want to save their ammo for the BFG (the way to fix that is for more people to pistol start maps), and while the SSG is objectively a better DPS than the shotgun, the shotgun has its advantages; it has a higher rate of fire, so you can deal with shit like a wave of enemies coming around a corner (if there's a shotgunner/chaingunner there, and you're still going through the reload animation, you have no way of stopping them from firing at you while you're vulnerable), and the shotgun's tighter cone makes it useful at longer distances than the SSG. It's situational but shouldn't be ignored just because you have the SSG>

It doesn't have the absolute kaboom punch of the SSG even at point blank, but I think the range and speed absolutely makes up for that.

I must say, I'm quite happy how Amid Evil turned out.
It combines the best aspects of my favourite games:
Fantasy themes and weapons of Heretic
Level design sensibilities of Quake usermaps
Visual feast and colorfulness of Unreal

I really wish that it inspires other indie shooter devs to follow similar path, or even better get Amid Evil 2.

Hideous Destructor private FuckinNewGuy that beat Doom E1-E2-E3 in UV earlier reporting in

Doom 2 is fun with HD. It's going to bust my balls pretty soon though, I'm sure. But I like the way it sucks.

Webm context: the game is a dick and spawned a HERP overlooking the platform you elevate onto here in MAP03. So in order to not get shredded to pieces in 2 seconds by it, I had to make a dash for one of the two sides of the pit, and then walk past it when it swiveled to the other side

>> No.5709743

>>5708080
Alien Vendetta is playable for a while with HD, you can get through it (Arch-Viles don't outright noclip anymore, so that probably makes things easier), but the last third will ramp up into an unbearable slog.
One map starts you with a bunch of every monster in the game facing you, and you need to make a split second maneuver to not be atomized.

Eric had the patience to get this far into AV, but that level took him about 4 or 5 hours to beat if I recall right, and that wasn't even the point where got sick of it (because apparently nothing fazes that man).
I think Plutonia would probably be a more suitable choice, not necessarily on skill 3.

What are some nice ideas for a warehouse? I noticed when placing the shelves that I hadn't planned anything with them and I thought that it would be a waste. So my plan is that you should be able to get up there and maybe be able to shoot at the monsters running around on the ground to get an advantage, that you should be able to traverse through the air and reach the other side of the room without touching ground and maybe have a RJ'able secret somewhere up there.

Opinions?

>PB v2.3 is kinda good. guns feel good but break your ears, and too much design bloat

A better mod than both PB and Brutal Doom:

>Weapons of Saturn surpasses both Brutal Doom and PB, and should be the gold standard for these "modern FPS elements"- themed Doom mods

Tell him he's being an idiot.
Doom's core and vanilla game is good, but Carmack and Romero wouldn't have insisted on the .wad format and then releasing the source code if it wasn't for the fact that they wanted people to be able to modify the game, hack it and make stuff. They loved seeing all the things people did with their game and their engine.

Whether or not HD is the kind of gameplay this guy would like is one thing, probably not, and not all mods are good, but modding the game is tradition and goes back to the beginning, for technical, artistic, and recreational reasons.

Doom never called it that, but Rise Of The Triad did, at least one of its many rocket launchers.
Given that Bazooka was a nickname based on how the original weapon looked sorta like a comedian's musical instrument of the same name, it feels more fitting for the style of ROTT than for Doom.

Also, here's the later Super Bazooka, and yes, they actually called it that, and it's awesome.

>“Due to miscommunications or differing ideas, a different cinematic video was created from the one that I originally scripted,” says Levine. “It had this elaborate sequence where Shodan would attempt to kill you in a double-cross, as this ‘cyber stinger’ that was in view provided tension of your impending doom.” Upon getting his hands on the video for the ending sequence, Levine didn’t see anything that he wrote in the script. “We didn’t have much to work with. It was like when you look in the cupboard and you’re trying to make soup, and you have a bag of salt and couple of pinto beans.” Working with fixed assets can be extremely challenging especially with limited time and resources as well as fighting the technology back then. Levine remembers, “We had to write to the assets we had at that point, and all we could do was edit it. We completely ran out of time and that cut scene wasn’t the right ending for the game.”

Pretty sure it had some funny powerups as well, think there was a Double Haste or along the lines of it.

I ended up finding a stimpack and barely making it
Real question is how do I do this without IDKFA. This map uses E2M8 so it has the "you must kill the Cyberdemon to beat the level" flag. The map has no weapons whatsoever (only got the shotgun from killing a shotgunner) and only 20 shells. I don't really know how I survived up to this point considering the level starts with a fuckhuge hallway and enemies open up on all sides, but I feel compelled to beat this map now. I probably need to check and see if all the maps are ACTUALLY intended for pistol start before I start a map pack.

Alright, I crunched the numbers and determined it's technically possible. The level has 17 shotgunners, but six of them are behind a wall and you can't collect their shells. That's 44 bullets. The game also has a backpack and one box of shells, so you can get 68 bullets total, more than enough to kill the cyberdemon.
I actually Tyson'd my way to the end of the level with enough shell but then died to the cyberdemon because I panicked and failed to circlestrafe. I recorded a demo of it but it desynced because APPARENTLY YOU CAN'T FUCKING PAUSE WHILE RECORDING A DEMO IN CHOCOLATE DOOM OR IT DESYNCS FUCK

Got a lump in my throat when I saw there was a person who made their college campus into a DOOM level. I know they didn't have the intention that such a level implies and it was half a decade before Columbine but playing through that level still felt eerie in a way surely unintended by the author.
