WoC is technically inferior than 3, but it has much more soul. I don't like time travelling gimmick, it's a convenient excuse to make cliche settings in formulaic time periods. WoC went back to "visit cool locations around the world" setting of Crash 2.

Besides prehistory, the n.trophy boss and the future city you could say every other level is based on a part of the world rather than a specific time period, it never felt like you were time warping.
Hell iirc the japanese version of Crash 3 has a world tour subtitle on it.

First of all anon, the japanese name for Crash Bandicoot Warped is "Crash 3: Warped".

Second, you're flat out right. It wasn't a world tour. All those places were periods in time. I get that you're a sheltered westerner but in the modern day(late 90s by Warped's consideration) there were not pirates as depicted in the game and pre-islamic arabia is not really much of a thing anymore. It's all islamic for the most part. People don't use WW1 fighter planes and those police cars on the highway level are certainly not still in use by american officers. The Great Wall of China is not flourishing, it is in a state of decay, the roman empire does not exist, and the medieval era has LONG SINCE FUCKING PASSED. The last Ice Age ended like 12,000 years ago and we have not built underwater structures featured in the water levels. It wasn't a world tour my dude. It simple wasn't.

Also we don't know what exists and what doesn't in Crash's world, there's ruins and tribes along with sci-fi labs and shit, so an egyptian tomb, chinese dynasty empires and pirates could still exists in that universe (as for medieval, it could easily be a renaissance fair and the underwater levels just regular water levels), not to mention they should have used more enemies themed after that period of time to give it a better feel of that era (like using dragons or knights for the feudal levels instead of just cortex's scientists in different outfits).
If they wanted the game to feel more like a time-travelling game, they should have give the levels better traits like in the prehistoric levels, like how about the egyptian levels are crash travelling through unfinished pyramids and using the machinery to build those as platforms and hazards?
Or the pirate levels having more pirate-themed motifs (rusty harbors, more grimy looking islands, etc..) instead of just ships and some scientists dressed as sailors? Or the chinese levels being more around Chinese villages/Castles with more mythological creatures instead of just the great wall with some dragons made by Cortex? Or maybe use another themes, like instead of the 50's why not a roman-themed era since there's that Tiny fight? if it's because of the bikes you could just turn them into chariot races, or how about ditching ww1 plane fights and go into futuristic star wars-inspired dogfights? (i mean coco uses a ship to fight n.gin, they should have gone using that).
And you got me wrong, i didn't said Crash 3 is a world tour, i said it feels more like that than a time-travelling game.

gimmick levels- most of them are good but it does suck that they limit the normal levels, biplane levels are the only actually bad ones though; medieval levels aren't great but most regular levels have great design, too easy if you aren't going for 100%, overall best variety, best bosses by miles

For me personally 2>=3>1 but it's a series where you could justify any ranking for these 3.

I get what time period they're trying to tell you, i don't need a date or some shit for that, what i don't like is that it isn't well done, it needs more elements from that era or be more creative if it really wants to give a time travel idea (natural creatures/people from that period, not just cortex's minions, also envoriments that give a much better feel of that era, the prehistoric one and the Arabic one are good but the rest are meh).
The JP title is more of an observation than anything, I know it's a western game, i just think it's funny.

OG 2 is definitely the best of the bunch.
With N. Sane, I'd say 1 is the best. Better controls and the bonuses are actually used in the levels. That and Stormy Ascent.
3 is the worst in both versions.

For me, it's 1. I like how most of the game has a natural jungle/tribal theme to it. The gameplay is simple and that can be relaxing, but there's challenge there too if you go for 100%.

WoC was my first PS2 game, I remember how much excited I was when I first got it. After years of rumors, the real Crash 4 was right in front of me, a real sequel to Crash 3, not another fucking spin off. It's a shame the game wasn't as good as the old ones (still played it over and over again just like the original trilogy).
