What would have happened had it succeeded in the west? Would you have liked to have seen it succeed? Did it even deserve to succeed? Did you even have one or do you currently have one?

I have a PC Engine. It has some neat stuff and I do like it, but it's easily the worst of the three main 4th gen consoles. Would've been nice to see it at least have a fighting chance in the West, though.

still hard to believe a hardware released in 1987 can put 482 colors on screen

Why is that hard to believe? The X68000 was released in 1987 and can put 65536 colors on screen.

>but it's easily the worst of the three main 4th gen consoles.

Probably because it is more like an in between 3rd and 4th gen console. Definitely better than NES but inferior to Genesis and SNES.

I'm talking in terms of library. It's library isn't anywhere near as strong as the NES either.

As far as technology, it's definitely more 4th gen than 3rd gen. The CPU is faster than the SNES, and it can do more colors than the Genesis. Its biggest weakness is only having a single background layer.

the x68000 had about 1MB of VRAM and cost over 5k kek

It deserved to succeed for sure. The VMU, online play, and support from both Japanese and American publishers (at first).
It was hampered by bad copy protection, the Saturn's aborted life cycle and the lack of DVD support.

>> No.5701238

>>5701198
Vast majority of its library is Japanese though since the TurboGrafx flopped in the US.

>> No.5701248

>>5701238
I know. My opinion is based on being fluent in Japanese and having sampled a good chunk of its library. It deserved to do better than it did, but even if it had gotten more localizations I don't think it could have really competed with the SNES and Genesis in the West.

I think it could have displaced the sega master system in europe if it was released in time.

In the US I think they should have just gone straight to the super grafx, it would probably be possible to have a similar price to snes and genesis. I didn't have it in my country but the graphics seemed good enough for the 90s, it seems similar to atari 7800 in that they just half assed it and were not really that serious about supporting it so in that way it didn't deserve to succeed.

I wouldn't want it to succeed at the cost of Sega.

I had one and had a lot of fun with it. I think unlike a lot of failed consoles it actually did a lot of things right, it had a good library and wasn't outrageously priced (or at least the base console wasn't).

I will say they didn't do themselves any favors by including a meh game as the pack-in back when that sort of thing mattered. Super Mario World could sell consoles by itself and Altered Beast was at least a known arcade game, nobody gave a fuck about Kieth Courage

And although the CD add-on allowed them to make some really interesting games it was kind of a hard sell since it was marketed as an accessory to the TG-16 and not the successor. People don't want to buy add-ons that are more expensive than the console, and they don't want to buy consoles where all the cool new games are for an add-on they can't afford. Sega made the exact same mistake but the Genesis was more established so it hurt them a little less.

supergrafx was cool, but really it should've been integrated into the pc engine cd somehow. it would've been a monster of a system.

I did buy one back in the day and I did want it to succeed.

It should have released around the same time in the USA as it did in Japan to have any chance at success. Going up against the Genesis in 89 was too much when Sega had arcade ports that people recognized.

What was this? Compared to the Turbografx, a marginal upgrade surely. Was it compatible with Turbografx games?

>> No.5701881

>>5701863
Compatible with PC-Engine games, yes.

It was a very marginal upgrade. It allowed for extra sprites without flicker and a couple more layers of background parallax scrolling. Basically becoming like the Mega Drive in terms of power but with more colors. Only five exclusive games were made for it and it flopped hard.

it was another video chip, so double the sprites, 2 background layers and double the vram and color ram. in total, 128 sprites, and about 1000 colors. also had more work ram for the cpu

Hard to believe. At one scrolling layer and eight colors per character, it’s unlikely any game ever came close to that number.

Even if TurboGrafx-16 was successful in the west, NEC would still probably go full retard with PC-FX.

You mind saying how much you paid for it and how hard it's been to find games? I've always wanted a PC Engine and discovering they were doing the Mini has reignited my desire to acquire one.

>> No.5705959

I had one and a Turbo Express, which was a very impressive handheld at the time. The console itself should have launched in the US st last two years earlier. Then it would have blown minds like it did in Asia.

I bought my Duo for like 10k yen at a local shop a few years ago when I was living in Japan (plus a few bucks for a capacitor kit later on when it started having audio issues). I bought an EverDrive pretty much immediately so I can't really say what collecting for it is like. Some of the games I saw were pretty expensive, though.

considering it only sold well in Japan, and had a small cult following in America and France/Germany/UK, the library never got the chance to grow

but considering it only got 650 games, there's a fair amount of good shit available

the system is an absolute must if you like Namco, Taito, Irem, Falcom, and Hudson games. Plenty of random shit by Sega, Compile, Konami, and Capcom too
