Why do all these Japanese computer games have such cool names but the actual gameplay is just a typical portopia clone, or worse, a VN? Were Japanese computers dogshit at rendering any sort of action like IBM computers, forcing them to make slow games with pretty art instead?

>> No.5705804

You already know the answer, no dedicate scrolling hardware, it had to be done through software which was hella slow. Commander Keen was groundbreaking for having miraculously fast scrolling and that still ran at 35 fps or some dumb shit like that.

>Were Japanese computers dogshit at rendering any sort of action like IBM computers, forcing them to make slow games with pretty art instead?
Yes. The PC-98 was a business computer like the IBM PC. It had high resolution and good colors for its time, but no hardware sprite or scrolling support. The X68000 and FM Towns had those things, but their home marketshare was negligible compared to NEC's, so basically all they got were lazy ports.

The PC-98 eventually got more advanced graphics accelerators similar to VGA and even Voodoo cards, but by then cheap AT clones running Windows were taking over the market.

it's not about being good at programming, it's about hardware

on old hardware made for gaming purposes with low memory capabilities, the graphics were generated from tiles and sprites. some of that hardware lets you offset these tiles by X amount of pixels horizontally and vertically, creating an illuson of scrolling

hovewer if you had IBM PC instead, your graphics card won't take any shortcuts and just uses a huge blob of memory describing each pixel and it's color separately. it's good for non-gaming purposes but unfortunately you must set each pixel separately, and that costs a lot of CPU time. no sprites, no tiles, all graphics must be generated by game itself, and this is slow.

Wasn't expecting the game to actually be fun, I always expect it was a sort of curiosity they managed to have an action game on the system that doesn't run like a powerpoint presentation, but it's actually fun enough. The bosses actually feel pretty good. The character movement has that appropriate heavy mecha feel while not still actually feeling too restrictive and slow, very similar to Assault Suit Leynos.
I am however starting to lose patience with the dialogue, it's not a surprise but the story isn't really interesting in any way, but however not even in a shlocky b-movie sort of way like Dead of The Brain was, it just feels like it's in the way of the action.

The English is the Patreon dude's translation? Cause once again it's full rewrites and omissions. I mean, the basic gist is there, he probably got it from machine translations, but details are cut and what's there is scrambled around and very simplified.

Most refuse, but occasionally a "good Samaritan" will give you a few drops. You then turn around with glee, bragging about how you got all that water for FREE, while we're sitting here with bottles filled with water because we hiked to the stream at the end of the road like everyone else.

You'll die on this road. You're just going to sit there for the next 70 odd years, because in your tiny delusional mind it somehow makes more sense to just sit and wait instead of do something about it.

Cause it's a matter of how bad the translation is. In the case of this Patreon dude, this translations are indefensible. And the mistakes he made clearly show he doesn't know even basic Japanese and isn't fit to translate.

Moreover, Dead of the Brain and Makyouden are both story-based games. The story is the point, and the Patreon dude instead provided a twisted rewrites far from the real thing.
