The WSC version is basically the same but with some interface improvements.

>Frontier is very easy entry, there's a few traps like Asellus' infinite training loop
(Not the same anon)
I know of this trick but why is it considered a trap?
Is it because of causing the BR to raise too high?
As long as you only do enough battles to spark a few techs for Asellus, I don't see how it can be a bad thing.

I kind of regret not playing through the wonderswan version of the game. It looks really nice, but I don't have the patience to play through it again.

>is basically the same
The ability to see the results of your monster eating isn't an interface improvement, it changes your decision making radically.
On top of this, mutants grow even wilder than the Game Boy version.
Also, in the muriclap Gameboy version's manual it was explicitly stated that the enemies will attack your first party member more often, which happened. However, this doesn't happen in the WSC.
The only change that can be considered an interface improvement is arguably the first. What I need to know is if WSC plays closer to the original Japanese game boy version and it was the Western version of FFL1 that got the changes.

Making a sequel to a gachagame seems like it would piss off people who spent money on the previous one

I don't know, but I'd suggest maiking a party of only three characters: human, mutant and monster. That way, you'll have more challenge and experience the three types of character development.
