I've been playing Dragon Quest 5 for Super Famicom, and it's blowing me away. Are the other old Dragon Quest games this good? The monster catching system and long timespan of the story are really exciting.

I'm gonna say it right now, 5 is the best dragon quest. The other games are not as good, but 4 is a cult classic if you want to try it.

1 is a 7 hour session
2 is a pain in the ass, especially at the end
4 is split into character stories, but its good
6 is so boring i forgot it exists
7 is so long i never finished
9 was on the DS and i never bothered
10 is a crappy MMO
11 is "pretty" but generic as generic can be

3 lets u customize you entire party from the beginning, and the world is massive.

5 has the best story in the series and has POKEMON/SMT monster gathering and joining your party type mechanics

8 is beautiful and incredibly fun and funny companions, probably the best in the series and most accesible.

They're quite good. Maybe try DQIV next as that game is also more plot focused like DQV. Personally my favorite is DQIII, it's more of a simple jrpg with less emphasis on plot but the adventure it provides is amazing.

DQII in general was rushed and the original Famicom had some pretty bad balance. Later version rebalanced it to not be as extreme but they still suffer from some of the poor design choices II had. II and VI are often see as the weakest of the mainline games.

5 is a very popular one and often considered the best. All the old ones are way better than the new ones (8 onwards) due to their horrific butchered localizations.
