Honestly I'm more concerned about laser failure than disc rot.

My first Sega Saturn game (and indeed first optical media-based console game) is Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition and I can still play it now. Meanwhile I'm worried the laser is going to give out before the disc ever becomes unreadable.

Saturn has one of if not the most robust retro CD laser in my experience.

Dreamcast’s got a respectable laser too. Really the consoles that notoriously shit the bed in terms of laser performance are PSX, Mega CD, and the CD-ROM2, all of which to my knowledge have new old stock lasers available. I’d say don’t worry about it.

Then there must be truth to CD-Rs burning them out faster because I've gone through 2. Pot tweaks one go so far.

When you die all the stuff you have at home will either be passend down to your Kids (Yeah right, as if you virgins have Kids/ Kids that are interested in collecting) sold off at a Yardsale, ebay, or just thrown out in the trash with no second thought behind it.
It would be like someone throwing away an empty yoghurt from a dead dude. Years of passion just destroyed in a blink of an eye without any care, regrets or empathy.
And even if you say there will be a collection that will at least make it to other collectors, they will die, too, and every time a certain percentage will be destroyed again, being supported by less and less people having interest in this old technology the farther the generations will go.

Why does anybody give two flying fucks about disc rot? This is not for the ages, there will be a select few in 50, let alone 100 years that will give this shit any value. The digital version of the game might still exist then, but all the retro technology (especially laser based) won't.

Look at those Grammophon boxes you could put in your pocket 100 years ago, fuck that old technology.

The DC's OMR is an uncustomized CD laser and the GD-ROM format is very taxing on that type of read head.

This is true. When Saturns were going for a few bucks I bought a bunch because I was afraid the lasers would die like PS or DC. I had to sell most of them for $100 on ebay because none died.

Getting really tired of this nihilism shit. There absolutely will be retro games still running 50 years from now. There may not be many systems but the games for sure will be around. We aren't talking about 100s or 1000s or 10,000s here. We are talking about consoles that had multi millions made.

Don't hurt yourself tipping your fedora to hard my little redditard. Many of the games discussed here were made long before you were. BTW, a CIB mikiphone is worth several thousand dollars. What to prove how retarded you are stupid zoomer.

The way you write I am pretty sure I could probably be your dad.
How many people you see collecting mikiphones or even have an interest in them wahtsoever? Is ebay-pricing a representation of the actual worth of such a machine? Even so, is being a collectorfag only about the money?

>>5688640
If we are talking about old toys in general most of them were made of wood or metal, not using flimsy laser technology which broke more than enough in the recent time of usage. Also, the old toys you just could use without any requirements, where as consoles and games need a lot of peripherals which makes a tad bit harder to get working.
>>5688487
I did not say that all of them will be dead, but there is a counterprocess between progression of new technology in relation in usage of old technology with each new decade. IF you believe that disc rot is real (which is the topic) and have an interest in actually playing the games and not hoarding them like stamps, the there will be other means to play the games in the coming future. If it is only about collecting and preserving the price, the market would get flooded with old, working technology as well as many units being destoryed over the years. Demand will plummet for this though as nobody in 70 years will setup a crt with rf to nes connection to play mario other than doing a history yahootube video about it. This is a nostalgic bubble we are living in (specifically /vr/), keeping the standards is Mostly based on nostalgia-values (comfort plays a really big role, path of least resistence). There will be very select few in the future who will imagine the same way of collecting like many do here today.

>tl;dr
Either way, disc rot should not be an issue. Either it doesn't exist, or you will be able to rebuy the CD for a cheaper price in the future when people sell of collections

>> No.5689062

Even if all my games started to rot I would just burn some CDRs to replace them. To me it's more about playing on the original hardware, having that authentic experience rather than "owning" rare games. I guess I'm more of a gamer than a collector although I understand the appeal of collecting.

Just to give another example, nes and snes game price started to stagnate/ Regress the last few years (at least here in europe) as the the core demographic of rebuyers (20-40yo) started getting older and stopped rekindling their past (We are living in the n64 bubble right now, and gamecube is getting a rise, which will decline again in 10-20 years).
Resellers on onlineshops however buy those games for cheap and artificially raise the price to suggest to the buyer the game has a higher market value. But in contrast to this more and more people are taking alternative routes of playing the games, like nes-mini/ emulation/ vc shops/ reboots/ etc... Which in return drops the demand for the old games even more to a point where the Shops will start going down with the price (for most games) to empty their inventory for more important units (in my example: buy a bunch of skies of arcadia or some shit). Now your smb3 is going for 8 bucks instead of 15 in it's peak phase, but the people who have interest in collecting already own it or moves on.
This will go on for years to come, the first wave of users will slowly die off and with each death the interest (for specifically a cartridge for an old console) will as well. Many will be destroyed in the process, as closing Shops will not care about 1000 snes sports games they got in their storage unit and just burn the batch to the ground. If nobody buys 500 copies of madden, then why preserve them?

And I am only talking about cartridges, those mofo are in comparison to CDs indestructible, which gives even more reason to throw away a CD-based game. Pretty sure a lot of 'math blasters' have seen the dump for instance.

Furthermore, imagine a future where there is a subscription based gaming-stream like Netflix with 0 latency, which normie person would rather buy all the old Technology than just go the path of least resistence and play retro on their modern monitors with a built-in app?

Project harder little zoomer. Age wise I could probably be your dad but there's no way any of my spawn could possibly be so stupid. Google mikiphone and check the number of views for the first couple video results.

I'm not justifying anything kiddo. But I am seriously using youtube views to answer your question about how many people "even have an interest in them wahtsoever". Obviously at least 64,000.
You're the one with started with the "I'm Ur dad" shit kiddo. You seem very self conscious about your age. This is almost always an indication that someone isn't very old. Why does it even matter? You're allegedly very old but clearly not very wise.

Shit gets destroyed for various reasons. When GameStop, Circuit City and Blockbuster stopped shelving NES and GameCube games, do you think those thousands of stores simply donated or sold their shit to people? They're all destroyed. In GameStop's case, there's plenty of dumpster diving videos showing how many have been destroyed.

>> No.5689507

>>5689489
You are dumb. The choices you have listed as being supposedly obvious for what they'd do aren't obvious at all, they're ridiculous. How does donating or selling them to people sound like a bad option? Donating shit would be a lot cheaper and easier than destroying it. Normally they threw them into the bargain bin and sold them for a few dollars durrr. Even having them for free would make more sense than that. The videos you're talking about are of returned items I believe which is totally different.

Seriously just fuck off with your backpeddling, just makes you look like a retard.

As for the views, 64k views are absolutely marginal for a youtube viewcount. That is nothing. Absolutely nothing.
But if you want to use this as a measurement, compare 64k to 8billion people...but wow so much interest, every household must be buying those mikiphones and giftig them to relatives, people stop going to take vacations just to affoard one for their pockets.
Fuck the walkmans and portable CD-players everybody is using nowadays... Oh wait.. But surely they got 128k views when you look up a Hitachi CD Player from 96' with 15 second shock resistence, must be proof that there is such a huge market for them. Hell, I can probably find a nice seller on eBay to let me have it for 400 bucks.

What back peddeling do you imagine I'm doing kiddo? All I see is a whole lot of kidplaining from you about how the numbers you asked for are irrelevant. I get it. You're young and dumb and everything old isn't interesting. Yet here you are, on a board dedicated to old toys, trying to convince a stranger that you're older than him. You might want to talk to someone about your issues.
