5687780 No.5687780 [Reply] [Original]

This thread is for discussing the dreamy, surreal 5th gen console known as the Sega Saturn.
I turned it on yesterday, only to find out the battery has already ran its course (it showed me the date/hour screen), I changed it 3 years ago so I think it lasted more than average (have read many people say theirs only lasted 1 year). Anyway here's the weird thing: the saves are still working. I guess before it's completely dead, it deletes the internal clock first, then the saves? I already have all my saves backed up on the memory cartridge anyway so no loss for me, but was surprised.

The Saturn is unironically the thinking mans console. It was handcrafted by Sega themselves to repel anybody with a sub-130 IQ. The games all have a distinct charm that not even the PS1 captured. The shooters were amazing, the fighting games were top tier, and the console itself is the definitive console to play light gun games on. The only reason why the Saturn is generally looked at in a more negative light is because it's quite possibly the only system in history to not get any notoriety for its amazing games. Almost every amazing Saturn game is overlooked to the general gamer. Its because the console was specifically designed to be an acquired taste. A wondrous taste only the enlightened can truly experience to its fullest extent.

>Anyway here's the weird thing: the saves are still working. I guess before it's completely dead, it deletes the internal clock first, then the saves?
This is a pretty common failure mode of battery backed save+RTC setups.
For example, my Pokemon Gold cartridge would only advance the time of day while the machine was on, but the save was still there.

This isn't 100% reliable, since if the power is too low to run the RTC, there's a chance that it dipped low enough for the save data to be damaged or destroyed.

>>5688932
It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. The important bit is that it's fast, if you've got a machine from the last 10 years, it'll work at full speed, 480i fighting games possibly excluded.
still, it was pissing me off quite a bit when I was writing a game for the machine -- pretty much no emulator actually handles the fact that VDP1 is retardedly fucking slow, so shit that works like a charm in SSF can run like ass on the Saturn because lol fillrate

It sets up a pretty standard C development environment, has model converters and a thing for generating VDP2 background data.
My only major gripe using it is that it uses plain integers in a lot of places where it really should be using fixed point numbers (like the SGL functions it's calling behind the scenes), so a bunch of functions lose a bunch of precision for no good reason.

No he didn’t. I worked at an Electronics Boutique in the 90s and I can tell you he squandered the potential that the system had. It wasn’t selling N64 or PSX numbers but it WAS beating the 16 bit consoles. Demand was high for Saturn content, why do you think we started importing games? People WANTED JRPGs, Bernie HATED JRPGs. Part of the reason retailers hated Sega was because they basically neglected us of Saturn games to sell. Sure, maybe KB Toys or Kmart were shaky with Sega, but us gaming focused outlets wanted to support it. It could’ve become a somewhat successful console but make no mistake Bernie killed it.
