I prefer the original graphics but I hear that Mato's translation is really good but the only way to play that on NES is with the 25th anniversary hack which changes the graphics, Mato's translation is also on the GBA version but that has shit music
What do
Should I just play the vanilla original version

IIRC faithful keeps the original graphics, might be wrong though.

Honestly the original translation is not bad, or at least I don't remember any flaw, other than the change in town names for no reason.

Some people say it's too dry
Do you remember any of Itoi's humor in the game?

>> No.5687575

>>5687569
Yeah, I remember weird stuff going on with NPCs, like the guy in the underground cave who says he's nobody, or the lying monkeys on the monkey cave, all that was very Itoi.
Probably Tomato did a better job, I don't know, but the original was fine to me.

Itoi isn't just about humor.
Anyway, I think Mother 1 has less humor than Mother 2. Form the get go, the prologue of the game is way more serious than Mother 2's "woops I'm dead! lol no wait I'm not dead yet" gag from Buzz Buzz.

Mother 1 is a lot more dry in general than earthbound, whether it's the original version or the NOA translation.

IIRC Itoi cites naming the series Mother as roughly such,
"(basing it off of John Lennon's song Mother) I wanted the player to feel that shame that you feel when you hear John say "MOTHER!!"..."
The dude is characterized by his, um, tangential relation to the rest of humanity and reality. He lives in a world all his own.

Definitely hats off to the guy for just fucking ending his series. Didn't have to keep fucking things up and turn Mother into a road trip game, FINAL FUCKING FANTASY.

shit though I might actually play a Mother game with that pretense...
>>5687527
EB0 as it is originally translated is fine. Stiff-ish as those tend to be, but I'm pretty fucking sour over romhackers after the disaster that was Brave New World's writing. Gonna go in and refit the Woolsey script over his bullshit because holy shit that guy's writing makes me want to strangle someone.

Anyway EB0 is fine, not a wildly amazing script but it's an NES game, and for its time it's pretty ahead.

Mother 1 feels like Peanuts, Mother 2 feels like a Nickelodeon 90s cartoon, Mother 3 feels like a Ghibli movie.

Earthbound does feel a lot sassier, quirkier
though I really appreciated Mother 1's brand of childhood fear: the atmosphere in the factories, the zoo, the town of lonely children etc. was really something

I think of Mother as being a combination of the Peanuts with X-Files and Stand By Me.
I really do just love the game to pieces.

And kind of unrelated but Earthbound always reminds me of the 90's "Jazz" design that was used for solo cups and paper plates and such. Not sure why exactly. Maybe the battle backgrounds or somewhat more surreal and neon nature of the game.

to be fair, it's not as if the last mother game wasn't so disconnected from the first that it that they should have just called it a different game.

Mother 3 was connected to EarthBound though, through Porky and Dr. Andonuts

Each Mother entry is only vaguely connected to the other. In Mother 2, the antagonist from Mother 1 returns. Same thing happens in Mother 3. But the world and main characters and story is different and not really connected to the story from the last game.
Mother 3 also has some hints at Mother 1, mainly the Magypsies seashell houses looking like Mother 1's Magicant houses, and some returning enemies that were absent in Mother 2, like the Titani.

That's true, but 3 felt like a deliberated farewell to the series, such that it even ends the continuity in that sort of 'happily ever after' fashion.

The gba version is a lot better I feel. Sandhop's translation is fine for its age but very dry in comparison. Make sure to use the color restoration patch as well.

The GBA versions of 1 and 2 are serviceable for what they are (remember, phones couldn't run emulators in 2003), the only bad thing in them is the screen ratio/cropped resolution from the original and inferior sound, but that's to be expected from GBA. Other than that, nothing was ruined.
Mother 1 on GBA added a few nice things, like a fixed run button that doesn't make the NPCs fastforward, and dedicated check/talk button so you don't have to open the menu, and the full version of the ending from EB0 proto (it's kind of weird to think most Japanese fans only got to see the full ending in 2003 on this version).
Also, EVE leaves a chip item that you can use to teleport directly to Mt. Itoi (so you can go back and forth to Magicant for free heals suing the onyx hook, then go back to Mt. Itoi using the chip)
