5675641 No.5675641 [Reply] [Original]

i finally completed this piece of shit game (famicom translated) to satisfy my autistic need to say i've beaten EVERY final fantasy like i've wanted since i was a kid, going in order up through X. holy shit that was awful. so much time wasted listening to podcasts and attacking my own party. finally i can get back to the ones that are actually interesting and comfy and function properly. the only great thing about it is the art, but that barely comes across at all in the actual game. i'm pumped for III, some people say it's secretly the best. in any case now every other FF is going to seem like a fucking masterpiece by comparison and i'll treasure every good second after pushing through this mess. i'm all in now.
sorry for the blog i just felt like sharing my ordeal now that it's finally over. anyone else tried this autistic endeavor? retro FF general?

I've finished this game with all my characters having less than 1000 HP, the "hit yourself" advice is a meme that turns out to be harmful since endgame undeads deal percentage based damage that can OHKO you

All you get from attacking your own party is HP, which is probably the least useful stat in the game. Not to mention, if you're ever at a point where you can safely attack yourself, you're already overpowered for the area you're in. What a retard.

FF3 remake is like this as well to a degree but is largely more flexible if you're creative and think things through. For example, you can kill the giant rat with three battle items, so you don't need to use mages there if you save some. There's also other stuff like the dark knight having a wider equipment pool and early jobs being endgame viable because of balance changes and new abilities.

Jrpgs attract people who want zero challenge and can do something brain dead easy until their characters are so powerful nothing stands a chance and they can steamroll everything without even trying.

So hearing that FF2 isn't like that, that to build a good party takes planning and paying attention to how you play and win battles... BUT that it's systems are exploitable and that you can game them by doing stupid shit like attacking your own party to speed up the process of getting so powerful nothing can touch you? Then that's the natural rout the JRPG fan will take.

Hence why games with actually interesting mechanics and strategy like FF2 and the SaGa games are almost completely ignored by them.

Yeah, he is the logical continuation of the whole existence theme of the game. But it is still quite anticlimactic to introduce the final boss right before the final boss fight. FF stories live off the emotional investment of the player, and when the final boss isn't even part of the storyline, then it's more like a "Who's that?"-moment than a "Finally the opportunity to give Lord Bad Guy who molested all my friends and messed with us for the entire game a proper pasting".

The only problem with FF2 is the monster closets, encounter rates are kinda ridiculous but so was every other rpg at that time. The story in FF is the best in the series, now the story itself isn't anything special but its how it comes together and how the characters interact and grow that make the game great. Its has a really serious tone compared to other FF games it touches on the ideas of friendship loyalty and how people change over time, its really deep for an 8 bit game. And here you are fucktard OP playing the game completely wrong and hating it, fuck you piss baby

I played all the FF games last year and went through FF2 on the PS1 and I thought it was alright.

I felt it was better than 1 honestly, 1 came off as very barebones and simple. Nothing stood out as being impressive but I guess that's because I've played tons of other JRPG's and going back to one of the first isn't going to be a unique experience.

At least with 2 it was trying new ideas. The level up system was a bit stupid because in the end my classes became Warrior, Monk, Mage without me even doing anything and then the fourth guy was just useless throughout since changing party members was kinda dumb as well. The dungeons weren't too bad in the beginning but they became a chore as time went on so I started looking at maps to see where to go to lessen the pain, fuck those doors though.

I nearly fucked myself by selling the blood sword after I got it, I didn't know the exploit on the final boss but luckily my friend told me there are actually two in the PS1 version and I was really lucky on that end, made the final boss a joke but honestly I was only doing 1-2 damage to him with my party at their current levels and I had to run from every fight in that dungeon since I was easily killed a lot.

I liked the story, atmosphere and music for what they were. Traveling around the map with that oppressive music was really cool and a nice change from the heroic sounding world map from 1. Game has a lot of flaws but I think it was fine for what it was, sort of like Zelda 2 in my eyes, it's annoying as fuck a lot of the time but it's a fine game regardless.

3 was the best NES FF game though.
