Because this thread sucks, I'm gonna ask instead: what's the best way to play Star Raiders? I'm assuming my only choice is an Atari 8-bit computer emulator, but is there some other release that's better?

It’s fun but it’s one of those things where you should really play an actual console on an old shitty CRT. I’m all for emulating, but the games (even the good ones) are pretty obsolete, you’ll probably enjoy the 2600 for what it is more if you get your hands on a real one for a few hours.

(not him) i'm 29, and while i can appreciate the historical significance of the 2600, and probably could enjoy a 2600 game for 5 or 10 minutes, the system was simply not capable of large or in-depth games
graphics don't make a game fun, but there's really only so much you can do with 128 bytes of ram and 4096 bytes of rom, most games are barely more advanced than a tiger lcd game
i can't think of anything you can play on the 2600 that hasn't been obsoleted by something else

I'm 27 and I love Enduro, although it might have to do with the fact that I used to play it when I was little.

For simple arcade-y games, the console is in no way obsolete. The type of limitation it has (old tech and simple controller) bred a type of game that you really can't find nowadays, with the games like that being flash shit that have almost no effort put into them.

>> No.5671137

The games are hard to play nowadays, but the stories about the developers racing the beam and pulling off crazy coding wizardry are spectacular. It's more fun to develop for than it is to play.

I have to grudgingly agree. As someone who had a 2600 when everyone else had a NES, it was frustrating that I couldn't get anything even approaching what they had.
Even if you made a special cart that had 40K or more, the hardware really doesn't have the capability of doing text, so even just trying to communicate with the player was nigh on impossible.
Even the more ambitious ones like Pitfall are still very repetitive. Things I liked were Mario Bros. and pacman which could be had better almost everywhere else.

>the hardware really doesn't have the capability of doing text, so even just trying to communicate with the player was nigh on impossible.
i was going to say "it doesn't even have any text adventures", but i double checked, and it seems there is at least one for the system, though it's paired with "entering text is not fun with the controller" and "8k just isn't enough for a text adventure, you'll see everything in the first play-through"

Same here and I'm older than you, I grew up playing on my father's old Atari before we got a Nintendo. But I didn't really play it much, it was like that toy you forgot you had, it was fun in short doses when bored but not really more interesting than whatever was on tv or playing tag outside. Then we got nintendo and it was 24/7 glued to video games after that. There is just a significant difference between pre and post NES gaming, sometimes it feels like it's a totally different form of entertainment.

No. Atari 2600 was just too underpowered, the games are either too simple, too shitty, or both. And everything that was decent was re-released a billion times on better systems.
The only kind of value Atari 2600 games hold is historical.

you're missing the point, it's not that pac-man and asteroids are too simple to be enjoyable games /at a conceptual level/, but there are better versions of pac-man and asteroids available on other systems, including the original arcade versions of those games
given the choice, would you honestly pick the 2600 versions of those games over the arcade version?
